Mouth bacteria grow fast in airless conditions. Oxygen rich saliva(唾液) keeps their numbers down. When we sleep, for example, the saliva stream slows, and sulfur(硫) producing bacteria gains the upper hand, producing classic “morning breath”.

Alcohol drinking, too much talking, breathing through the mouth during exercise, anything that dries the mouth produces bad breath. So can stress, though it’s not understood why. Some people’s breath turns sour every time they go on a job interview.

Saliva flow gradually slows with age, which explains why the elderly have more bad breath trouble than younger people do. Babies, however, who make plenty of saliva and whose mouths contain relatively few bacteria have characteristically sweet breath.

For most of us, the simple, dry mouth variety of bad breath is easily cured. Eating or drinking starts saliva and sweeps away many of the bacteria. Breakfast often stops morning breath.

Those with constant dry mouth find that it helps to keep gum, hard candy, or a bottle of water or juice around. Brushing the teeth wipes out dry mouth bad breath because it clears away many of the offending bacteria.

Surprisingly, one thing that rarely works is mouthwash. The liquid can mask bad breath smell with its own smell, but the effect lasts no more than an hour. Some mouthwashes claim to kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath. The trouble is, they don’t necessarily reach all offending germs. Most bacteria are well protected from mouthwash under thick layers of mucus (粘液). If the mouthwash contains alcohol—as most do—it can worsen the problem by drying out the mouth.

72. Which of the following is mentioned as one of the causes of bad breath?

A. Tooth trouble. B. Sulfur rich food.

C. Too much exercise. D. Mental pressure.

73. According to the passage, alcohol has something to do with bad breath mainly because ____.

A. it keeps offending bacteria from reproducing B. its smell adds to bad breath

C. it kills some helpful bacteria D. it affects the normal flow of saliva

74. Mouthwashes are not an effective cure for bad breath mainly because ________.

A. they can’t mask the bad odor long enough

B. they can’t get to all the offending bacteria

C. their strong smell mixes with bad breath and makes it worse

D. they can’t cover the thick layers of mucus

75. We can infer from this passage that ________.

A. offensive breath can’t easily be cured

B. elderly people are less offended by bad breath

C. heavy drinkers are less affected by bad breath

D. offensive breath is less affected by alcohol

Some snakes eat other snakes, even poisonous ones. The poison does not do them any harm(伤害). Snakes can swallow(吞下) things that are bigger around than they themselves are. This is possible because the jawbones(腭骨) are loosely joined, and the mouth can stretch(伸展)to make room for a fat animal. The snake’s slim body stretches to make space for the animal when it is inside.

Many snakes eat birds’ eggs or frogs(青蛙). Others eat pests(害虫), mice and other animals that harm crops on farms. Because snakes do this valuable work, you should never kill one. It is too dangerous for you to kill a poisonous one. Leave that job to experts.

A butcher watching over his shop was really surprised when he saw a dog coming inside the shop. He went over to the dog and noticed it had a note in its mouth. He took the note and it read “Can I have 12 sausages and a leg of lamb, please. The dog has money in his mouth, as well.”

The butcher looked carefully and was surprised to find that there was really a ten-dollar note there. So he took the money and put the sausages and lamb in a bag, placing it in the dog’s mouth. The butcher was so impressed, and since it was about closing time, he decided to shut up shop and follow the dog.

So off he went. He followed the dog to a bus stop. The dog stopped and started looking at the timetable. The dog checked out the time, and then sat on one of the seats provided. Along came a bus. The dog walked around to the front, looked at the number, and went back to its seat. Another bus came. Again the dog went around to the front, looked at the number and climbed on. The butcher, by now, open-mouthed, followed it onto the bus.

The bus traveled through the town and out into the suburbs. Eventually the dog got up, and moved to the front of the bus. It stood on two back paws and pushed the button to stop the bus. Then it got off with groceries still in its mouth.

Well, the dog and the butcher were walking along the road, and then the dog turned into a house. It walked up the path, and dropped the groceries on the step. Then it walked back down the path, took a big run, and threw itself against the door. Then again, it threw himself against it. There’s no answer at the house. so the dog waited at the door.

The butcher watched as a big guy opened the door, and started shouting at it. The butcher ran up, and stopped the guy. “Why do you shout at the dog? It is really a genius.” The guy responded, “You call this clever? This is the second time this week that this stupid dog’s forgotten its key.”

1.Which may be the best title of the passage?

A. A clever dog.                                     B. A curious butcher.

C. A cruel owner.                                   D. A second lost key.

B. Because a dog was not supposed to come into his shop alone.

C. Because the dog was not afraid of being butchered.

D. Because the dog could read.

3.The passage implies that _________.

A. dogs are cleverer than man

B. dogs are our best friend

D. some people are never satisfied with what they have got

4.The dog threw itself against the door, because _________.

A. it wanted to force the door open

Animal moms are great moms. You might be surprised at some of these moms.

Octopuses (章鱼)

The mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed. However, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched (孵化).

Crocodiles(鳄鱼)

A crocodile mother puts a lot of time and effort into raising her babies. She starts by building a nest (巢), which she guards for over two months! When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young crocs call out to their mother, who digs them out and helps them hatch. She then carries them in her mouth down to the water, where she will guard them for several more weeks or months until they learn to hunt on their own.

Bats (蝙蝠)

Bats become moms by hanging head up in a cave, giving birth. Catching the youngster before it can fall to the ground below, she puts it in a pouch (育儿袋). Bat moms may carry babies with them when feeding for the first few days. As the little bats get bigger and heavier, moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and return often to feed them. It continues for about three weeks, until the babies are grown up and able to fly on their own.

Koalas (考拉)

The animal mom gives birth after a pregnancy (怀孕期) of only 35 days. The hairless baby climbs into its mother’s pouch and lives there for another five months. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Once it is too big to return to the pouch, it will climb onto its mother’s back and ride there until it is about 12 months old.
