4.It was not until the couple arrived at the cinema ____ they found they had left the tickets in the office.( )
A.whenB.whereC.whichD.that

分析 这对夫妇到了电影院才发现他们把票忘在办公室了.

解答 答案:D
题干中until the couple arrived at the cinema句中的时间状语;it was…that…强调句型,对they didn''t find they had left the tickets in the office until the couple arrived at the cinema 句中的时间状语进行强调;对not until进行强调时,not要和until一起提前.故选D.

点评 强调句型it is/was…that/who…用来对句中的主语,宾语,状语进行强调;强调时,只要将被强调部分放到is/was后即可,不影响句中结构,这也是判断强调句型使用是否正确的一个方法.

1.Most people today think of sleep as one continuous period of downtime.This is not the way people used to sleep.According to researchers,in earlier times,people divided sleep by first sleeping a few hours,waking up,then going back to sleep.In the first period,you would typically sleep until midnight or shortly afterwards.Halfway through the night,you came out of first sleep,you would stay in bed and relax quietly.It was called the watching period.Then you would start to feel sleepy.so would return to bed and tall asleep again for your second sleep.This period would continue until early morning when daylight arrived.With no artificial lighting in homes,people naturally woke up early to take advantage of sunlight.
Before the 18th century,people had no gas or electricity in their homes.Fire,candles,or oil lamps were the common forms of lighting.This lack of artificial lighting in homes contributed to people's sleep patterns.It made sense for people to go to bed early.
Today,human may consider divided sleep a strange habit,but sleep researchers say that it is actually a more natural sleep pattern.Dr.Thomas Wehr of the U.S.National Institute of Mental Health has studied human sleep.He thinks that modern sleep problems occur because the older,natural way of sleep is breaking through the more recent continuous sleep pattern.Wehr and other scientists believe that artificial lighting has altered the way people sleep.In a research study,he asked 15adults to rest and sleep in darkness for 14hours(from 6:00P.M.to 8:00A.M.).At first,the subjects took a few hours to get to sleep,and then slept 11hours a night.Then overtime,they switched to divided sleep.They fell asleep for about three to five hours in the evening,stay awake for an hour or two,and then slept again for four hours till early morning.
We modern humans generally do not practice divided sleep.However,many of us have the experience of waking up in the middle of the night.We usually consider this a sleeping"problem".but perhaps we should look at it as natural behavior.Divided sleep may be the way we should all be sleeping.A first sleep followed by a relaxation period and a second period of sleep could help all of us to beat the stress of our fast-paced lives.

You may not be getting the airline you paid for.
You may go to an airline website and buy a ticket, and get onto an airplane that has a similar name painted on it,but half the time, you're really on a regional (地方的) airline. The regionals aren't held to the same safety standards as the majors:their pilots aren't required to have as much training and experience, and the public doesn't know that.

-Tech pilot at a regional airline,Texas
You never know where the safest seat is.
There is no safest place to sit.In one accident, the people in the back are dead; in the next,it's the people up front.
-John Nance, aviation safety analyst and retired airline captain,Seattle

Most pilots have.Airplanes are built to take it.You hear a big boom and see a big flash and that's it.You're not going to fall out of the sky.
-Charlotte,pilot for a regional earner,.North Carolina
People don't understand why they can't use their cell phones.

3.[1]When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat and which activities to participate in.As a result they develop confidence and independence.
[2]As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with.In school, children do not experience success in the same way.Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.
[3]One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In a camp setting,a good counselor will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate.Something as simple as clean-up,is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in turn results in friendship.
[4]The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities.Children learn to see others from a different viewpoint.Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
