A long time ago there lived a poor slave whose name was Aesop. His face was white, but very homely. When Aesop was about twenty nine years old ,his master lost a great deal of money and was determined to sell his slaves. To do this, he had to take them to a large city where there was a slave market.

The city was far away, and the slaves must walk the whole distance. A number of bundles(成捆的东西) were made up for them to carry. Some of these bundles contained the things they would need on the road. "Choose your bundles, boys," said the master. "There is one for each of you." Aesop at once chose the largest one. The other slaves laughed and said he was foolish. But he threw it upon his shoulders and seemed well satisfied. The next day, the laugh was the other way. For the bundle which he had chosen had contained the food for the whole party.

"Aesop is a wise fellow," said his master. "The man who buys him must pay a high price.” A very rich man, whose name was Xanthus, wanted a servant. As the slaves stood before him he asked each one to tell what kind of work he could do. All were eager to be bought by Xanthus because they knew he would be a kind master. So each one boosted of his skill in doing some sort of labor. One was a fine gardener; another could take care of horses; a third was a good cook; a fourth could manage a household. "And what can you do, Aesop?" asked Xanthus. "Nothing," he answered. "Nothing? How is that?" "Because, since these other slaves do everything, there is nothing left for me to perform," said Aesop.

This answer pleased the rich man so well that he bought Aesop at once, and took him to his home on the island of Samos. In Samos the little slave soon became known for his wisdom and courage. He often amused his master and his master's friends by telling funny stories. His master was so much pleased with him that he gave him his freedom.

Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.

I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.

The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.

In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.

1.What did the author find out after studying psychology?

A. Only good jokes make people laugh

B. Many factors lead to people laughing.

C. Funny things can make people laugh

D. Laughter can make people healthy.

2.Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?

A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.

B. The pedestrians behaved in a funny way.

C. They could feel the pedestrians’ happiness.

D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.

3.What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?

A. Speak highly of B. Get close to

C. Look down on D. Feel content with

4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

Britain’s oldest man made his first visit to London yesterday at the age of 101. Mr. John Evans had never found the time or money to make the trip from his home in Forest Fach, near Swansea. But, when British Rail offered him an all-expense-paid birthday treat to the capital he just could not refuse.

He arrived at Paddington Station and smartly turned out in his best suit, favorite Panama hat and a red rose in his buttonhole. “It’s very exciting. There’s no doubt about it,” he said.

Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. “But I’ve been on the seas to that faraway land called Ilfracombe 21 miles from home,” he joked.

Mr. Evans, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings return from Swansea – too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said.

During the next two days Mr. Evans will be taken on a short tour of London to see the sights. Top of his list is a visit to the House of Parliament organized by his MP, Mr. Gareth Wardell.

The only arrangement he does not care for is the wheelchair provided for him if he gets tired. “I don’t like the chair – people will think I am aging,” he said. His secret for a long and healthy life has been well publicized – no wine, no tobacco and no anger.

Before setting off from Swansea with his 76 – year – old son, Amwell, he said jokingly, “I’m glad to see they’ve given me a return ticket.”

1.The very reason that Mr. Evans didn’t go to see the world is that _______.

A. he had already been on the seas to Ilfracombe

B. he was too busy to go too far away from home

C. he believed “East or west, home is the best”

D. he couldn’t afford both the time and the money

2.Mr. Evans didn’t like the wheelchair simply because _______.

A. he was not used to traveling in it

B. the wheelchair was of poor quality and not easy to operate

C. he thought he was still young enough to manage the trip

D. he actually preferred walking to sitting in it at home

3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Mr. Evans had to pay for the return ticket.

B. The trip to London excited Mr. Evans very much.

C. Mr. Evans had to work hard to raise his family when young.

D. Humor was one of Mr. Evans’ characters.

4.The probable explanation to Mr. Evans’ long life lies in _______.

A. his sticking to his hometown

B. his hard working for the family

C. his good living habits

D. his living conditions near the Swansea
