8.A team of researchers in the UK has shown that children who were taken to the library more often and owned more books at two years old achieved higher scores in school tests when they began primary school.The research also showed that although social background has a noticeable effect on a child's readiness for school,attending pre-school and having their parents teach them a wide range of activities have a positive effect---while extended exposure to television lowers their scores.
"One message coming through loud and clear is that how a child learns in his very early years is critical(至关重要的) for a smooth transition into the educational system,"said Professor James Law."This is a very positive message,as it gets us away from the belief that a child's educational future is pre-determined by standard measures of socio-economic disadvantage,such as income,housing,or the mother's education."
Data from the study shows that children from a positive communication environment had a better expressive vocabulary by their second birthday.These children went on to achieve higher scores in language,reading and maths tests when they entered school.In the early years,the communication environment was a better predictor of children's success with language than their general social background.
Most children develop speech and language effortlessly,but some are slow to acquire these skills and go on to struggle with literacy(读写能力) and academic skills throughout their schooling.This project set out to uncover what factors contributed to these problems.
Professor Sue Roulstone said,"These findings are an encouragement to all parents to provide a positive communication environment for their children from the very start of their lives.The project did identify particular aspects of the communication environment,such as having children's books around and not having the television on too much.But the main message is that,as parents,we can have an impact on how our children learn to talk by providing a range of communication experiences.And the better our children are at talking by the age of two years,the better they will do when they start school."

5.Silence is unnatural to man.He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness.In between he does all he can to make a noise in the world,and he fears silence more than anything else.Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence.If he is introduced to another person,and a number of pauses occur in the conversation,he regards himself as a failure,a worthless person,and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox(喋喋不休唠叨的人).He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly,but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure.
The aim of conversation is not,for the most part,to communicate ideas;it is to keep up the buzzing sound.There are,it must be admitted,different qualities of buzz;there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito.But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person.Most buzzing,fortunately,is pleasant to the ear,and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors.
Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk.Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new.Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears,though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel.At the end of an evening during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time,they just prove themselves to be successful conversationists.

16.Years ago there was a group of kids who would hang around at some local ponds(池塘) in the woods near their houses in Warwick,Rhode Island.In summer they caught frogs and fish.When winter arrived they couldn't wait to go skating.Time passed,and the ponds became the only open space for the kids to enjoy themselves in that neighborhood.
One day a thirteen-year-old boy from this group of kids read in the local newspaper that a developer wanted to fill in the ponds and build over a hundred small houses called apartments.So the boy went door to door and gathered more than two hundred signatures to stop the development.A group of citizens met and decided to support him.
At the meeting of the town planning organization,the boy was quite nervous at first and spoke very softly.But when he saw the faces of his friends and neighbors in the crowd and thought about what was happening to their favorite ponds,his voice grew louder.He told the town officials that they should speak for the citizens.He also insisted that they should leave enough space for children.A few days later,the developer stopped his plan.
Nine years later,when that teen was a senior in college,he was informed that the developer was back with his proposal to build apartments.Now twenty-two years old,he was studying wetlands ecology.He again appeared before the town planning organization.This time as an expert,he used environmental protection laws to explain restrictions on development in and around wetlands and the knowledge of wetlands ecology to help to improve the development.Finally some apartments were built,but less than half the number the developer wanted.The ponds where those kids used to hang around were protected by a piece of natural land,and are still there today.

3.Have you ever looked toward the sky on a fall day and witnessed a group of migrating birds?If so,you probably noted the V-shaped formation of the birds or the birds flying in a ball-like formation.Why do birds fly this way?Many theories have been developed to explain the formation patterns of different types of birds.
One theory is that birds fly in certain formations to take advantage of the laws of nature.The birds know that flying in a V-shaped pattern will save energy.Like the lead cyclist in a race who decreases wind force for the cyclists who follow,the lead bird cuts wind force for the birds that follow.This decrease in wind force means that the birds use up to 70percent less energy during their flight.When the lead bird becomes tired,a more rested bird takes over that position.
But saving energy is important for more than one reason.Sometimes food is short during migration flights.Keeping energy enables the birds to fly longer distances between meals.
When food is sighted,the birds guide one another in a different way.When a bird identifies a familiar feeding area,it might turn around in order to signal the group to change direction.Then,this bird becomes the new leader.It helps guarantee that other birds will know exactly where it is going.Then the whole group makes a change in direction,gently streaming from the sky down to the ground.This formation is like an arrow pointing to the location of food.
Scientists have also studied the birds that sometimes fly in a ball-like formation.Researchers believe that the birds come together if a predator (天敌) is spotted.The predator may then become impatient waiting for a single bird to fly away from the group.The birds will often dip and dive as a group,frustrating even the most persistent enemy.Scientists report that this is a very effective method of defense against an attack.
The birds care for their fellow fliers through teamwork.As transportation expert Henry Ford once said,"If everyone is moving forward together,then success takes care of itself."When it comes to teamwork,these feathered fliers are a soaring success!

Located on the outskirts of Hongcheon, about 58 miles (93 km) northeast of Seoul,"Prison Inside Me"came to life after Mr.Kwon voluntarily asked to spend time behind bars for"healing reasons,"but his request was turned down."I didn't know how to stop working back then,"he said."I felt like I was being swept away against my will, and it seemed I couldn't control my own life."So,Kwon and his wife Roh Ji-hyang decided to take matters into their own hands, and designed and built a prison-like spiritual center. The construction was completed in June last year and cost about 2 billion won (﹩19 million).
The facility includes 28 cells, furnished with only a toilet,a sink and a small table, where guests can spend time alone, thinking about life and enjoying private thinking periods. Moreover, guests can also join group thinking periods in the hall, where they are given instructions on how to free themselves from what Mr.Kwon calls the"inner prison"to find inner peace.
According to the Wall Street Journal, hundreds of stressed South Koreans are checking in at the stress-reduction facility to think about their lives and regain control of it.A two-night stay at"Prison Inside Me"costs 150,000 won (﹩146).

It is not easy to provide an exact history of the street art movement.This kind of art has developed in many kinds of ways in places all over the world.Also,because it is illegal to paint public and private property without permission,street artists usually work secretly.This secretive nature of street art and its countless forms make it hard to define exactly.And people have different opinions about the movement.Some think street art is a crime and destroys property.But others see this art as a rich form of non-traditional cultural expression.
Many experts say the movement began in New York City in the nineteen sixties.Young adults would use paint in special cans to spray their"tag"on walls and train cars around the city.This tag was a name they created to identify themselves and their art work.This colorful style of writing is also called graffiti.It is visually exciting and energetic.
Graffiti also became a separate movement expressing the street culture of young people living in big cities.Graffiti art represented social and political rebellion.These artists could travel around areas of the city making creative paintings for everyone to see.Sometimes this street art created a dispute between artists and city officials.Graffiti artists created their images and city officials quickly painted over them.
During the 1980s,two famous New York painters-Keith Haring and Jean Michel began showing their work in art galleries and museums.This is when street art started to become part of the more general popular culture.
