When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship.Having been a Straight-A student,I believed I could l6 tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne.I was extremely interested in the ideas he l7 in class.

One more test before the final exam. One more 24 to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and for the first time 25 the meaning of the word "thorough”. But my 26 did no good and everything 27 as before.

The last hurdle(障碍)was the final. No matter what 28 I got, it wouldn’t cancel three C-pluses.I might as well kiss the 29 goodbye.

I stopped working hard.I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final,I even 30 myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I'd have 31 with a test.

A Week later.I was surprised to find I got an A.I hurried into Professor Jayne's office. He 32 to be expecting me.“If I gave you the As you 33,you wouldn’t continue to work as hard.’’

I stared at him,34 that his analysis and strategy were correct. I had worked my head 35, as I had never done before.

I was speechless when my course grade arrived:A-Plus.It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship.I've always remembered Professor Jayne’s lesson:you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

阅读下面短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案。

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep; the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual, because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.

Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?

Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life , ” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside , she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance (救护车) to her rescue.

Point 3 The mobile removes our secrets. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch , Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, any how their last meeting went.

Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says , “ We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near-but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”

Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously (同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can use the Internet, the biggest library on the Earth.

1.What does the writer mean by saying “The telephone creates the need to communicate”?

[ ]

A.People don’t communicate without telephone.

B.People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.

C.People have communicated more since the telephone was created.

[ ]

B.Mobile phones bring convenience as well as no secret to people.

C.Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.

D.Mobile phones encourage people to waste time in chatting.

3.Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people’s life?

a. Point 1. b. Point 2. c. Point 3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5.

[ ]

A.c, d
B.a, a
C.a, c
D.b, e

4.It is possible to talk to several complete strangers simultaneously

[ ]

Reading comprehension

When I was a boy, I belonged to the Boy Scouts so I used to go camping every summer, and once something happened which I have never been able to explain.

We were camping in a place above a river. After arriving, we all rushed down to the river and had a swim.Standing by the river, we noticed that it was surrounded(环绕)by cliffs(悬崖).If someone wanted to reach the river at this point, he had to walk past our camp.

Several days later, the scoutmaster had to be away for a day. That afternoon, we had supper early. We were sitting round the fire, eating and talking, when a man walked past and went down towards the river. We all felt that this man looked very strange, but, because each of us was afraid of looking very stupid, no one said anything.

We ate rather slowly, taking as long as possible. After finishing, we collected our plates together so that we could take them to the river where we always washed them. But no one moved towards the river梬e stood looking at each other ashamed. Then all shouting at once, we began talking about the man who had walked past us.We agreed how strange he looked and we wondered what he could be doing by the river. We knew that he could only return by passing through our camp.

An hour passed. Then one of the boys suggested we should creep(悄悄移动)down by the river so that we could see what the man was doing.Moving very slowly and keeping in the shadow, we crept down towards the bank. One boy climbed a tree so that he could see everything clearly. He called to us that there was no one there, so we ran down to the bank, looking everywhere carefully. We could not understand where the man had gone.

When it got dark, we went back to our camp feeling bewildered. We told the scoutmaster what had happened in the evening.Smiling, he doubted that we had seen the man, but finally suggested we go and look again. We did, but there was no one there.

Many years have passed, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday. What did we see? I do not know.
