In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it high?ly,believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad;that it sets one. person against another;that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their selfworth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them,playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying,they always have an excuse:"I may have lost. But it doesn't matter because I really didn't try. " What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost,that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly,this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

When I was 17 ,I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last,someday you'll most certainly be right. " It made an impression on me,and since then,for the past 33 years,I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:"If to?day was the last day of my life,would I want to do what I am about to do today?" I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was sedated (麻醉) ,but my wife,who was there,told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope,the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

Efforts to educate people about the risks of substance abuse (毒品滥用) seem to deter (阻止) some people from using dangerous substances,if such efforts are realistic about what is genuine?ly (真正地) dangerous and what is not.
