Text messaging, or simply “texting”, with allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today.

The advantages of texting are obvious. Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it one second. Texting helps you to “talk” to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to “talk” to someone secretly if you don’t want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking.

However, texting has its disadvantages. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can’t receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information.

What’s more, if you don’t do texting properly, for example texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause injuries and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2011. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don’t notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting the use of mobile phones while driving.

Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings.

The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperature could mean the end for some

migrating animals.Migrating or mobile animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold of winter to warmer areas. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds(聚食场) on the way. Whales and turtles cover vast areas of ocean. The report says that changes in any one of the places which these animals use can cause serious harm."Obviously these animals have developed their traveling patterns over thousands of years. But climate change is almost certain to be extreme over the next 25 t0 50 years, and it is extremely

unlikely that these animals can change their habits fast enough," said the report author Dr. Robert Hepworth.

Hardest hit by rising temperatures are turtles. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles produce far more female eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtle birthing sites are producing only females, the report says, It also provides evidence that some turtles are more likely to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.

With birds, the main problem is climate-related damage to important areas at either end of the travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of climate-related changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more violent storms, the report concludes.Other animals picked out as particularly in danger include:

◆the North Atlantic Right Whale, whose main food( tiny shrimp ) is disturbed by the change in ocean flows

◆the White-beaked Dolphin, which is out-competed by other kinds of dolphins in warmer waters.

The report is not all bad news. Even with major climatic changes, protecting the environment can still help mobile animals to recover.

"We need governments to start taking action at the national and international level. The clock is running." said Dr Hepworth. And some animals are already adapting, with the report mentioning whales that are changing their feeding behavior, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.

48. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The effect of climate change on migrating animals,

B. How animals are adapting to changes in temperature.

C. The importance of saving migrating animals.

D. The need for government policies to prevent global warming.

49. Which of the following is mentioned as a consequence of rising temperatures?

A. More storms will affect the ability of whales to find their feeding grounds.

B. 20% of all birds are likely to die out because of land loss.

C. Migrating animals can adapt to the changes quickly.

D. Warmer oceans will increase the competition between different kinds of dolphins.

What will you be doing when you are 26 years old? Studying at university or working for a living? Take a look at what Albert Einstein was doing at the age of 26.

100 years ago, Einstein was working in Switzerland. His hobby was physics. Without much money or help, he wrote five papers(论文) for a physics magazine. Three of these greatly changed the study of physics and our understanding of space, time, light and matter(物质). His most famous work is on the Theory of Relativity(相对论). Einstein was given the Nobel Prize for his discoveries. Although he also did many other things later, the years 1905 has been called Einstein’s “Year of Wonders”. It has been 100 years since then. Because of this, the UN has named 05 the World Year of Physics.

Today, over fifty years after Einstein’s death, a question is asked,  “ Will there ever be another Einstein?” It may take a long time. After all, Einstein was born more than 200 years after Sir Isaac Newton, another great scientist. Besides, physics is a different field now, and education is different, too. Even if you can’t be the next great scientist, it is still helpful to remember some of the things that made Einstein great. He thought independently(独立地) and read widely. He left with us a formula(公式) for life: If A is a success in life, then A="X+Y+Z." X is work, Y is play, and Z is keeping your mouth shut.

1.The year 1905 is known as Einstein’s “Year of Wonders” because           .

A.Einstein was working in Switzerland in 1905

B.Einstein was 26 years old in 1905

C.Einstein made some very important discoveries in 1905

D.Einstein studied physics in 1905

2.Why hasn’t there been another scientist as great as Einstein?

A.Because the study of physics is not enough.

B.Because it is hard to make important discoveries as Einstein did.

C.Because people don’t work hard any more.

D.Because physics is getting more and more difficult.

3.The UN has named 05 the World Year of Physics because           .

A.Einstein is 100 years old this year

B.Einstein has been dead for more than 50 years

C.there have been other great discoveries after Einstein’s death

D.it is the 100th year since Einstein’s “Year of Wonders”

4. What does Einstein’s formula for life mean?

A.Success means years of hard work.

B.Success means all study and no play.

C.Success means working hard, relaxing and not talking too much.

D.Success is a secret that nobody knows.

In the social and economic fields the UN increased its efforts to fight against poverty, ignorance, hunger, and disease and to help raise the standards of living in the newly developing countries.

The sixteenth General Assembly placed considerable emphasis on the idea of economic development by planning the current decade as the United Nations Decade of Economic Development. The agreement called upon UN members to help the newly developing countries achieve a minimum rate of growth of 5% by the end of the decade. It also emphasized the need for industrial development and encouraged cooperation with respect to regional-development programs.

In the past the organs and agencies of the UN in the economic field have concentrated largely on economic development. Increased attention was directed towards the need for balance and integration in economic and social development. It was emphasized at various UN meetings that particular attention must be given in the new nations to such problems as urbanization, housing, community development, and child welfare.

The Assembly has also offered a $100,000,000 world food program designed to use surplus (过剩的) food to encourage the development of needy countries. The program would improve upon the present unsatisfactory method of disposing of surplus food supplies and would enable the poorer nations to use more of their resources for development purposes.

Many of the UN specialized agencies increased their budgets. This means that such agencies as the Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, the World Health Organization, and the International Labor Organization will be pushing ahead at an increasing rate to deal with problems in their respective fields.

The Assembly again set $150,000,000 as the target figure for the work of the UN Technical Assistance Program and the Special Fund. If funds are available, technical assistance will move ahead at a faster speed.

Unlikely though it seems, the potato promoted economic development by underpinning(支持)the industrial revolution in England in the 19th century. It provided a cheap source of calories and was easy to grow, so it liberated workers from the land. Potatoes became popular in the north of England, as people there specialized in animal farming and home industry, while farmers in the south concentrated on wheat production. By a happy accident, the concentrated industrial activity in the areas and a potato-driven population boom provided enough worker for the new factories. Friedrich Engels even declared that the potato was equal of iron for its “historically revolutionary role”.

The potato promoted free trade by contributing to the end of Britain’s Corn Laws, which restricted imports of grain into the United Kingdom in order to protect domestic wheat producers. Landowners supported the laws, since cheap imported grain would reduce their income, but industrialists were against the them because imports would drive down the cost of food, allowing people to spend more on produced goods. Eventually it was not the arguments against the Corn Laws that led to their end-and more’s the pity. It was the tragedy of the Irish potato famine of 1845, in which 1 million Irish lost their lives when the potato crop on which they lived died. The need to import grain to relieve the situation in Ireland forced the government to change its position.

This paved the way for free trade in other areas, which became British policy. As the duke of Wellington complained at the time, “Rotten potatoes have done it all.”

The UN has declared 2008 the International Year of the Potato. It hopes that greater awareness of the goodness of potatoes will contribute to helping to reduce poverty, improve food security and promote economic development.
