Seated in a convertible (敞蓬车) with the top down at 60 miles an hour,Mary looked at the flies that sat on top of Mark’s hair. How could they stay there? She wondered.

Mary had not seen Mark in years, until the other day when he came into the cafe where she worked. His appearance was different from when he was in high school. Now,he was a bit fat and thick glasses covered his eyes. However, that didn’t change Mary’s feelings for him at all. He had just bought a new red sports car and asked her if she would like to go for a ride and then have dinner with him. Her heart beat with excitement as he opened the door for her. She noticed something very strange as Mark got into the car and started to drive away. On the hair was a group of flies just sitting there.

Mary stared in amazement. It seemed the faster they drove, the more determined the flies were to stick to his hair.

Mary remained silent. She leaned forward and turned the radio on,to try to divert her attention away from the flies, but she couldn’t help thinking about them. She looked up at Mark, who was completely devoted to what was going on and continued to sing to the music while driving merrily along.

Finally,Mark pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road beside a diner and looked in the mirror and said, “Mary,I would like to comb my hair before we get something to eat. Could you reach under the seat and give me my hair cream?”

Mary reached under the seat and pulled out a camping backpack, which contained a round jar and started to laugh wildly as she pointed to the label (商标) •

In our world today, the media and entertainment industries are constantly focusing on beauty over brains. Movies, television shows, commercials, and magazines all make use of models and actors whose physical attributes (特性) will sell their product.

As our country is trying to reduce the obesity numbers, eating disorder statistics continue to increase due to the push for thinner people. While obesity is a serious medical condition that can lead to many health problems, many of us try to lose weight for appearance purposes. Children as young as elementary school age have begun to worry about the numbers that appear on the scale. In my opinion,it seems that “fat” has become the new “ugly”.

Two weeks ago,37-year-old Wisconsin television reporter Livingston, who is 235 pounds, received an e-mail from a man named Krause. In the e-mail Krause attacked her, writing, “Your physical condition hasn’t improved for many years. Surely you don’t consider yourself a suitable example for this community’s young people, girls in particular. ”

Today,it seems that a vast majority of people care more about how they look and appear to their peers rather than what is inside. The truth is that every person is built differently;we all come in different shapes and sizes. Just because someone is heavier, that doesn’t mean they eat large amounts of junk food around the day. Likewise, even though a person is thin, that doesn’t mean they are necessarily healthy and fit.

If you are reading this and you struggle with your weight or your appearance, please recognize that you are beautiful and special in your own way. You are worth so much more than you realize, and even if I don’t know you, understand that I respect and support you. Beauty is not defined by size;it is defined by how we treat others and respect ourselves. In the words of the talented film actress Kirstie Alley, “There’s a lot more to life than how fat or thin you are. ”

(   ) 1. With so many people losing weight,it will end in

   A. models’ and actors’ appearance in ads

(   ) 3. The writer used the example of Livingston to show

   A. people think “fat” looks ugly

   B. fat people are becoming cleverer

   C. her physical condition is good

   D. young people never follow examples

(   ) 4. What Kirstie Alley said means    .

   A. people should pay attention to the appearance

   B. there is no need for any people to go on a diet

   C. people are beautiful when they concern others

   D. there’s always someone who understands and supports you

Stay on the brighter side of life One very important component of optimism is gratitude or feeling grateful. In fact, there is a strong connection between a grateful attitude and a heightened sense of well-being. Appreciate all the positives in your life by starting a gratitude journal in order to remember what you’re grateful for.1.        Feeling down? Instead of feeling sorry for yourself waiting for the universe to throw you a bone, try acting like you’re happy—even if you aren’t. A sincere smile and a forced smile will cause the same chemical reactions in your brain,so you can actually fool your mind into feeling better by making it react chemically as if things were going well.2.        Reassure yourself that everything is good—even if you don’t feel it.

“3.        If you’re stuck in traffic, then everything else must be going horribly too”’says Anne Parker,a wellness counselor. By blowing negative events out of proportion, you’re setting yourself up for feeling down all day. Instead, acknowledge that you’re stuck in traffic, but also bring to mind something good, like the beautiful scenery outside the window. That way, you’ll get in the habit of forbidding negative circumstances from blanketing your whole day.

Swearing to lose 20 pounds or to run a marathon seems like goals leading to happiness, but they take time to achieve.4.        You may even end up admitting that you have been defeated. However,if you focus on the small milestones that occur along the way,you will feel positive about your progress, which will give you the strength to keep going.

  5.        Try making someone else’s day better. A report by United Healthcare and Volunteer Match found that volunteers are 72% more likely to characterize themselves as optimistic compared with non-volunteers. Plus,89% of volunteers say that volunteering has improved their sense of well-being,and 92% say that it enriches their sense of purpose in life.

   A. Try to help someone in need.

   B. Want to give your attitude a lift?

   C. People tend to think in an either-or way.

   D. Act in an optimistic way—smile, laugh, tell a joke.

   E. You’ll fail to appreciate more important things in your life.

   F. By focusing on not having accomplished them yet,you will start to feel down on yourself.

   G. By remembering the pleasant things in your life, you can actually turn a negative attitude around.

My favourite English teacher could draw humour out of the driest material. It wasn’t forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson’s dictionary,Addison’s essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight o’clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own, some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation,I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen the humour. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions (典故) and irony and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher.

My least favourite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week period,to be written every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on.   Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other’s journals. Mine was passed to Joe,that class clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make a joke of and said, “This writing isn’t fit to line the bottom of a birdcage. ” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.

So what makes the difference? Humour is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing,or it can tear them apart. It is true that humour is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating.
