The Canadians love the great outdoor-20% of the Canadians go camping each year-and consider the
natural phenomena of their country to be unequalled in the world. More than 90% of Canada remains
undeveloped, and the Canadians are quite content to keep it that way.
With no lack of land, their cities tend to grow horizontally (水平地) rather than vertically (垂直地).
Just about every house in town has a large grassy lawn that requires mowing in summer and at least four
trees: two at the front and two at the back.
In a country with that much natural space, it seems logical that one would want to look after it. Not all
the Canadians have seen the Rockies, but every single one of them wants them to be well cared for and not
buried by commercial development or tourist litter by the time they get there.
To solve trash problems, several cities are using technology to transform household waste into soil-
enriching compost (堆肥). Edmonton has constructed North America's biggest composter. Citizens place
recyclable materials into blue bags which are picked up and taken to a sorting and treatment facility. The
$100-million plant, which covers an area the size of four football fields, processes over 1 000 tons of refuse
a day, enabling Edmonton to reuse 70% of its residential waste. Everything from glass and milk cartons (纸
盒) to metals, plastic, even concrete and asphalt (天然沥青) from sidewalk repairs are recycled.
Another leader in recycling is the coastal city of Halifax where the recycling program has made its way
into law, making it illegal to throw an apple core into a garbage can.

1. What makes the Canadians satisfied according to the passage?
[     ]
A. That most of their country remains wilderness.
B. That there is little grassy land and few trees.
C. That they can go hiking every year.
D. That all of the rubbish can be dealt with.
2. How many tons of the household waste in Edmonton can not be processed in North America's biggest
    composter a day?
[     ]
A. over 700 tons
B. over 1000 tons
C. over 1428 tons
D. over 428 tons
3. All of the following statements are right Except _____.
[     ]
A. It is logical that the majority of Canadians want to look after their natural space
B. In Halifax, throwing an apple core into a garbage can'is against the law
C. Not all the Canadians have ever visited the-Rockies and want them to be well cared for
D. The $100 million plant can recycle most of the household waste in Edmonton

America is a country on the move. In unheard of number, people of all ages are exercising their way to
better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly-up 12 percent
from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they
would be more attractive and confident if they were more attractive.
It is hard not to get the message. The advantage of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage
stamps, and television ads for everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did
not catch on until the 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of doing
regular physical exercises. Growing publicity for races held in American cities helped increase a strong interest
in the ancient sport of running. Although running has leveled off in recent years as Americans have discovered
equally rewarding-and something safer-forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running remains the
most popular form of exercise.
As the popularity of exercise continues to increase, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The
key to fitness is exercising the major muscle group strongly enough to double the heart rate and keep it doubled
for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three times or more a week will produce
considerable improvements in physical health in about three months.
1. According to the passage, what was the percentage of American adults doing regular physical exercises
    two years ago?
[     ]
A. About 70%
B. Nearly 60%
C. More than 12%
D. Almost 50%
2. Sports in daily life began to become popular as _____.
[     ]
A. people got the message from magazine covers and postage stamps
B. Scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV ads
C. research showed their health benefits
D. an increasing number of races were held in American cities
3. The author's purpose in writing the last paragraph is chiefly to show us _____.
[     ]
A. that running stopped increasing in popularity
B. the increase of scientific evidence of advantages of exercising
C. that people have found other ways of exercising besides running
D. about how to improve physical fitness
4. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
[     ]
A. Different Forms of Exercise.
B. Scientific Evidence of Health Benefits.
C. Exercise-the Road to Health
D. Running-a Popular Form of Sports

Living in a green area can make you live longer, according to research published
today. The research also shows that the difference in life expectancy (预期寿命)
between rich and poor becomes smaller among those who live in an environment
with parks and trees.
Richard Mitchell, from Glasgow University, and his colleagues, found that the gap
between the number of deaths of people on high incomes and the number of deaths
of those on low incomes in green areas was half that compared with figures relating
to built-up areas.
Green spaces, classified by the researchers as "open, undeveloped land with natural
vegetation", encouraged people to walk and be more active. Exercise in these settings
could have greater benefits than exercise elsewhere, the researchers said.
The benefits potentially go beyond exercise. Studies have shown that being around
green spaces can reduce blood pressure and stress levels, and possibly help patients
recover faster.
A number of researchers have looked at the effects of greenery on our well-being.
But few studies had looked at whether living in green areas reduced health inequalities,
the Glasgow team said.
Using information from a land-use database of 2001, the researchers divided the
pre-retirement population of England into four groups according to income level, and
five groups according to access to green space. They then looked at death rate for
2001~2005. They found that the inequality in death rate from all causes relating to lack
of money was less in those populations in the greenest areas compared with the figures
for people living in more built-up places.
They found an even stronger relationship when it came to deaths from certain diseases
such as heart conditions and stroke (中风). There was no difference, however, in deaths
from lung cancer.
The researchers said that changing the physical environment was an easier way to fight
against poor health than using media campaigns or giving out information on health. "The
result of the study is clear: Environments that promote good health might be very important
in the fight to reduce health inequalities."
1. The underlined word "that" in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
[     ]
A. the gap
B. the number of deaths
C. the income
D. the living area
2. What was the special point of the Glasgow team's research?
[     ]
A. They offered a scientific definition of "green spaces".
B. They encouraged people to exercise in green areas.
C. They studied the effects of greenery on people's health.
D. They focused on the influence of greenery on health inequalities.
3. What advice would the researchers probably give according to the last paragraph?
[     ]
A. More health information should be given to the public.
B. People should take more exercise every day.
C. More trees and grass should be planted in cities.
D. People should help to fight against health problems.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
[     ]
A. People should live in green areas.
B. Green spaces promote good health.
C. Income influences health less than environment.
D. Exercise in green areas benefits people a lot.

Millions of years ago there were many types of dinosaurs on earth. Most dinosaurs were plant-eaters.
The Apatosaurus, for example, had a long thin neck so that it could eat leaves from trees. Other dinosaurs
were meat-eaters. The Tyrannosaurus Rex killed smaller dinosaurs for food.
Dinosaurs were real animals that once lived on the earth, but they died out about 65 million years ago.
The disappearance of the dinosaurs is in some way a great mystery (谜). Some scientists think that the
climate (气候) changed suddenly. Fossils (化石) of trees tell us that the temperature dropped a lot and that
the level of the sea dropped as well. This means that it got suddenly much colder. Perhaps the dinosaurs
were too slow to change with the climate.
A new idea is that a meteor (流星) crashed into the earth. Scientists discovered a place in Mexico where
they think the meteor crashed. They think that there was a lot of dust from the meteor. The dust landed on
the plants. Also the dust blocked (阻挡) the sun's light for as long as five years. Many animals, including
dinosaurs, were plant-eaters, and perhaps the dust killed them. This means there was nothing left for meat-
eating dinosaurs to eat, and so they died out. But, as many animals from that time didn't die, we are not 100%
sure what really happened.
1. What is the subject discussed in the text?
[     ]
A. Dinosaurs, the real animals living millions of years ago.
B. The two types of dinosaurs.
C. The probable reasons for dinosaurs disappearance.
D. A meteor crashed into the earth.
2. What are the two possible explanations to the dinosaurs disappearance?
[     ]
A. Temperature dropping and sea level dropping.
B. Climate changing and meteor's crashing.
C. The dropping of temperature and sea level.
D. Climate changing and the dust blocking the sun.
3. What is the direct cause of the disappearance of meat-eating dinosaurs?
[     ]
A. A meteor's crashing.
B. The dust blocking the sun.
C. The plant-eating dinosaurs death.
D. It is still unknown.

On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy (多泥的) water running down the slopes (山坡) of
a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes.
Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say
that the land is eroded (侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion.
Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they
need. Plants need water and salts from the soil.
We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation (保护).
One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots
hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong
winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall.
Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces (梯田). Water carrying soil cannot
run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow of the water.
Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces.
There are some other ways of soil conservation.
1. On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because _____.
[     ]
A. there is no terrace on the slopes
B. there is no small plant on the slopes
C. it washes away soil from the slopes
D. there is too much soil on the slopes
2. Plants cannot grow on eroded land because _____.
[     ]
A. there is a lot of sand
B. there is not enough water and salts
C. there is no water
D. the land is too hard
3. One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is _____.
[     ]
A. to grow small plants such as grasses
B. to plant trees around an open field
C. to add fertilizer to the soil
D. A and B
4. From the passage we learn that there are _____ ways to reserve soil.
[     ]
A. only three
B. two
C. more than three
D. six

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play a
significant role in the process of recovery from illness.
As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the galleries (画廊) and into public places,
some of the country's most gifted artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard
edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have
significant collections of modern art in corridors (走道), waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent initiatives(new plans) owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at
a Manchester Hospital in Northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in
modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.
A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place
to hold regular exhibitions of art and paintings, in the outpatients waiting area of the Manchester Royal
Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain's first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon
joined by a team of six young art school graduations.
The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms, the visitor experiences a full view of fresh
colors, playful images and restful courtyard.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expense when a patient is recovering from an
illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong
painkillers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.
1. What does the author mean by using the phrase "to soften the hard edge of modern buildings" in the second
     paragraph?
[     ]
A. To hold exhibitions of art and paintings in hospitals.
B. To tear down the old hospital and build a new one.
C. To decorate hospitals with art collection.
D. To paint the walls of hospitals in soft colors.
2. What is true about Peter Senior?
[     ]
A. A famous doctor in Manchester Hospital and a gifted artist.
B. Britain's first hospital artist and a patient in Manchester Royal Hospital.
C. One of the six young art school graduations.
D. A gifted artist and a pioneer introducing art into hospitals.
3. According to Peter Senior, we can infer that _____.
[     ]
A. modern hospitals have a lot of patients
B. art is not appreciated by a large number of people in modern society
C. patients should be encouraged to learn painting
D. artists can not find their positions in modern society
4. What does the last paragraph suggest?
[     ]
A. The improvement of hospital environment may help the patients recover from illness.
B. The improvement of hospital environment may cost the patients more than before.
C. The patients needed no painkillers when they had a view of a painting.
D. The patients had no pain at all after the improvement of hospital environment.

wonderful place this world would be.At school you teach us not to fight with others,to work things out,to
