Dear Ms. Wang,

I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.

I’ve decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course. I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuouslywas important to them.

So next academic year, Term 1 will be like always: sentences to paragraphing. And Term 2 will work toward the 5-paragraph essay. The final 3 weeks of Term 2 will be reserved tointroduce writing for TOEFL and CEE. By that time, if the students have done their job correctly, then they should be able to write quite well.

As for the Latin course, I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what’s on offer before I actually introduce the course. A number of students already emailed me about the course.

I am sure you don’t understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is. People around the world are interested in what we plan to do. There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course. Please share what I have said with the administration. I want them to understand the importance of this course. The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) isthatI have confidence in our students and in myself. I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin, they are going to be amazed. It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll see you soon.

Yours,

Edward Johnson

My parents knew their wealth: each other, their six children, and their faith. They tried to live simple lives so that they could have time for what was most important.

They didn’t busy themselves buying a bigger house, because that would mean working harder to pay the monthly mortgage(按揭贷款),working overtime or taking second job. Who would go running with me then? Who would read stories to me?

They didn’t burden themselves with buying an expensive car because that would mean worrying about installment(分期付款) bills. Besides, walking to the shopping centre every Saturday afternoon with me gave my dad his needed exercise, and made me feel so special.

One of my heart’s delights was seeing Dad and Mom in their bedroom at night, after our nightly family prayer. The lights were turned off, and I’d see the figure of my father seated on his old chair and Mom standing behind him, gently massaging(按摩) his shoulders. I’d hear them talk about what happened during their day. Even as a child, I sensed their quiet pleasure in being together.

My question today: Could they have done this rich ritual(仪式) each night and nourished(滋润) their marriage if they had been busy paying for expensive clothes for themselves or their kids, or if they had been worrying about monthly bills for new hi-tech equipment? I don’t think so. And I’ve made a choice: I don’t want that of life either.

A. There were six people in the family.

2.What did the parents regularly do with the author?

A. They wrote stories together.

B. They read newspapers together.

C. They regularly took exercise together.

D. They went shopping together each day.

3. The author believed that his/her parents’ happiness was due to(由于, 归功于)

A. their attitude towards life

B. their love for each other

C. their common interests

D. their ability to communicate with each other

4. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author __________.

A. got bored with his/her parents’ way of educating kids

B. was influenced by his/her parents’ lifestyle

C. didn’t want to follow his/her parents’ advice

D. didn’t want to live the same life as his/her parents

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence - and a not-so-good influence - on this generation of American teenagers.More than 2,000 teachers took an online survey.Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a "mostly positive" effect on their students' research habits and skills. But 64 percent said the technologies "do more to distract(使 - - - ---分心) students than to help them academically." And 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an "easily distracted generation with short attention spans."

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project.Judy Buchanan is the vice director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report.Ms.Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more and faster."Teachers really favor these tools because they are ways to make some of the learning exciting and engaging.Young people favor these tools. The goal is to really help them become creators of meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers."

But one problem the survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. They trust too muck of the information they find on the Internet.Judy says these students haven't developed the skills to determine the quality of online information."It's something that really has to be taught and paid attention to.Because in a world in which things happen quickly, you do need to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have."

Another problem is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online.Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research libraries.

Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

1.The text mainly tells us _________.

A. all the students use digital tools

B. the Internet is playing a key role

C. digital tools bring about benefits and problems

2.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

3.The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means _________.

A. students do not have the right digital tools

B. students can’t judge online information properly

C. students haven’t the ability to adjust themselves
