1.For many years, machines have been doing work that people once did, including some difficult jobs.Search and rescue operations in dangerous environments are often seen as the first areas that will employ high technology robots. But there is another area where they may soon take jobs traditionally held by human beings:the restaurant industry.
Teams from around the world competed in early June at the DARPA Robotic Challenge Finals in California.A team from South Korea and its robot called DRC-Hubo,won the first place in the competition. The second and third place winners were from the United Sta tes.The robots were required to drive a vehicle, climb up steps and do mechanical work.Such activities are easy for humans to perform, but more difficult for machines. Not all of the c ompetitors were successful. The failures showed how difficuit it is to design effective walking
machines.
Akihiro Suzuki works at Yaskawa Electric,a company that develops robots. He says robots cannot do everything a human can,but they are able to work without becoming tired. He says robots cannot taste food, change heating levels or seasonings to get the best flavor (风 味).But he says if a food can be easily prepared,a robot can repeat the same movement to reproduce the same meal.
One Japanese woman who saw the robots working wanted to bring them home.Masayo Mori says she would like to have a husband who could work like a robot.Suzumo Machinery showed its sushi (寿司)maker robot. It performs the often difficult work of wrapping the popular Japanese food.Hiroshi Monden is an official with the company. He says people all over the world now eat sushi, but there are not enough skilled workers to prepare it.He says his machine can help anyone make sushi.

8.Remember to tip when in the US
In the US,giving a little extra money to service workers is a common practice.Though US national law requires that businesses pay workers at least﹩7.25per hour,employees (33)receiving (receive) tips---often waiters and waitresses---are the exceptions.They usually only receive at least﹩2.13an hour,and tips make up the differences.As the Wall Street Journal put it,"The American system of tipping holds the promise of great rewards for waiting staff."
So how (34)should you tip if you are in the US?
Normally you pay tips as a percentage of the bill.(35)Offering(offer) an extra 15percent of the bill to the waiter or waitress in a restaurant and to the delivery man or woman is customary and expected.You can offer more for great service and less for poor service.
Yet there is (36)an exception.For take-out food,you don't have to provide tips,though some people say that filling an order still requires work and time that deserve a little extra-but maybe a little less.
Tips are not expected at fast food restaurants,pizza parlors,cafes or ice scream shops either,though a tip jar might be right by the cash register (收银机).Don't feel (37)obligated(obligate) to throw some money in,but also remember that it doesn't hurt.Those workers don't rely on tips.
Other service workers also receive tips.For taxi drivers,15% is the norm,(38)more (much) if they help with your bags.Hairdressers often receive about 15% of the bill.The same (39)goes(go) for spa therapists (水疗师)and tour guides.
Though thinking about when to tip and how much you should tip causes a big headache for many Chinese people,it's important to bear in mind that (40)so long as/on condition that you show respect and use your reasoning, things will be just fine.

5.Online Communication
In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with,a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letter.Frankly speaking,I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.
But a story about online communication changed my mind.
An old man,who suffered a lot from Parkinson's disease,was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name.Living totally alone,he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family.How did he achieve this?He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.
I,therefore,managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the opportunity came.My life changed.E-mail,and all online communication,is something truly different.It has capabilities that few other products can match.
E-mail is convenient.It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection.The slow postal service is no match.If you wouldn't want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager,you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.
Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy.But wait.E-mail can be inconvenient.It can waste time and energy.
Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200unread messages.You could easily spend half a day clearing  junk ads.
Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers.Once we throw ourselves into the machine,we may forget the human touches we once held so dear.I'm sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter,phone call,and face-to-face meeting…even in the world of modern communication.
As I listen to the sound of the modem(调制解调器),I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but,at the same time,I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.
41.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word"junk"in paragraph7?A
A.old and useless
B.New and useful
C.Short but valuable
D.Long but clear
42.What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication?D
A.The sound of the modem.
B.His own illness.
C.The changing of his life.
D.A sick old man's experience.
43.What does the writer think of online communication?C
A.It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.
B.It is perfect and always does good to you.
C.It is extremely useful and convenient,but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.
D.It does more harm than good.
44.According to the writer,traditional means of communication will never disappear becauseB.
A.they are convenient and popular though they are slow
B.they help to keep the friendly relationship between people
C.most people cannot keep up with the development of technology
D.modern means of communication does too much harm
45.How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?A
A.With the help of his computer.
B.By writing letters with his pen.
C.By making telephone calls.
D.By visiting them regularly.
