    Everyone experiences culture shock in some form or another．But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people．A lot of the time，the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries．They were active and successful in their community．They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed．When they come to a new country，they do not have the same positions or hobbies as they already had in their countries．They find themselves without a role，almost without an identity．They have to build a new self image．
    Culture shock produces a feeling of disorientation （晕头转向），which may be homesickness，imagined illness，or even paranoia （妄想症）．When people feel the disorientation of culture shock，they sometimes feel like staying inside all the time．They want to protect themselves from the unfamiliar environment．They want to create an escape within their room to give themselves a sense of security．This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term，but it does nothing to familiarize the person more with the culture．Familiarity and experience are the long term ways to settle the problem of culture shock．

    Why？A growing number of high school seniors are tired of riding the academic conveyor belt from preschool all the way to university．They're burnt out．Or not quite ready．Or they want to explore a few interests before deciding what to study in college．So instead of packing their bags to college，they're volunteering in New Orleans or teaching in Thailand．They're starting the great American novel，or working for a short time to help figure out what they want to do with their lives．
    Understandably，that makes a lot of parents nervous．But a gap year does not mean that a student will remain degree-less forever．While there are no formal studies on the number of students who never end up making their way to college after the gap year，evidence from admissions officers across the country says very few actually leave college without finishing their courses．Taking a gap year can actually make kids more focused and ready for future academic life．In fact，Harvard University believes so much in the gap year that it encourages every student it admits to consider a year off before really starting．
    The reason behind higher education's support of the gap year is clear：Better-prepared students mean higher completion rates．And it's completion that matters．Parents should remember that getting a kid into college is only half the battle．According to the College Board，three out of five students who enter a public four-year college don't manag to obtain a degree within five years．And nearly 30percent of all students who enter college don't return the second year．Considering the fact that this year's average price at a four-year private college is about $23，712per year，it's a pretty expensive place to play around．

    My father went out of the room and came back with the pearl wrapped in a piece of white velvet．He laid it on the table in front of the four dealers．The great pearl caught the light，gathered it and softened it into a moon of dark fire．None of the dealers spoke for a moment or two．

    In May 2001，three young men took a young cat，named"Kensington"after the area of town from where she was taken，from the street to a house．They began to cruelly treat and mutilate her to death，videotaping the attack．Two of the suspects，recognized as 21-year-old Jesse Champlain Power and 24-year-old Anthony Ryan Wennekers，were arrested shortly after the incident．Neither helped the police in an effort to find the third suspect，at the time known only as"Matt．"
    In May 2002，Katie set up the"Find Matt Campaign"，with the goals of raising public awareness（意识）about animal cruelty and having as many eyes as possible look for Matt．
    "I don't think Matt would have been caught had it not been for Katie Woodward's information，"said Detective Gordon Scott，one of the arresting officers．
    Kaczorowski faces the charges of animal cruelty，theft under﹩5，000 and possession of property taken by crime，but one charge remains absent：that of animal cruelty．According to Canadian law，this kind of crime must be charged within six months．The case is now before the Courts．
