Last Saturday I went to the library as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I hear someone crying for help. I went up to see what was happened. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in the distance while many peoples were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat, but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carried him back to safety. To his great relief, the kid was saved.

I am proud what I did. I hope everyone can give a hand when someone else is in need.

“Don’t get discouraged, Hallie,” Kathy said, comforting her with a hug. “It sounds as if you have a bit of a mystery to solve. Maybe you should do a little spying on Maya.”

Feeling better, Hallie put on her scuba gear(潜水服)again and waited. Maya, the dolphin, had been swimming playfully, but suddenly she threw herself to the back of the tank where the filter box(过滤箱)was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away.

Hallie followed Maya. “What was she doing here?” she wondered. When she looked behind the box, her question was answered. She swam back and saw Maya was in front of Kathy with a comb in her mouth waiting for her treat.

“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Kathy, taking the comb and throwing her a fish.

“I know,” declared Hallie, handing Kathy a handful of items, “I followed her to the filter box and these are what I found.”

From the look on Kathy’s face, Hallie knew everything was beginning to come to light.

“Do you remember the other day you said that Maya really liked her treats?” asked Kathy.“Well, I think this was more than a training exercise for Maya. Every time you found something in the tank, that meant one less fish for Maya. She couldn’t bring all the items to me at once, so she found a hiding place for them. That way you came up empty-handed, but Maya would always get her treat.”

“Okay, Maya,” said Hallie facing the dolphin, “you win! The treats are all yours.”

Maya dived down, and then jumped out of the water, turning herself over in midair. Shaking their heads in disbelief, Hallie and Kathy reached for the fish. Maya deserved the treat.

1.What was the “mystery” in the story?

A. The secret of Maya’s finding the items.

B. The secret of Hallie’s winning the game.

C. The reason for Maya’s liking her treats.

D. The reason for Hallie’s spying on Maya.

2.Maya hid the items because she considered Hallie as a ________.

A. spy

B. competitor

C. playmate

D. trainer

3.At the end of the story, Hallie and Kathy thought Maya was ________.

A. energetic

But a man with bad manners has no respect for others He uses words carelessly and behaves rudely towards others and causes a lot of unpleasantness. In the end, he himself will suffer most. Everyone will avoid him and he will be forced to live a lonely life.

To live well in society, money alone is not enough. We should also have good manners, for it’s human nature to seek friendship; and friendship cannot be bought with money. Most painters discover a style of painting that is fit for them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.

Some of Picasso's paintings are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves, “What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look under the surface of the things we see.

Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eyes see. At the age of 90,he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world.”

1.The ugly cruel and strange paintings by Picasso _______.

A. make us try to notice something hidden in the things

B. allow us to ask questions about them

C. force us to question anything we see

D. cause us to think what Picasso saw was different from what we see

2.The underlined sentence “Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces” means _____.

A. sometimes he tore his pictures into pieces

B. he broke something he was painting and threw them away

C. sometimes he showed some broken pictures to others

D. things in some of his pictures seem to be in disorder

3.Why have people called Picasso “the youngest painter in the world?”

A. Because he observed things with the eye and the mind.

B. Because he looked young when he was old.

C. Because he never stopped painting he was old.

D. Because he never gave up looking for something new.
