To master a language one must be able to speak and understand the spoken language as well as to read and write.Lenin and his wife Krupskaya translated a long English book into Russian. But when they went to England in 1980, English people couldn’t understand what was said to them. These days more foreigners are coming to China and more and more Chinese are going out to foreign countries to work or study. So the spoken language is becoming more and more important.

Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English language are not exactly the same.If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.

Well, what about writing? Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas.People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.

Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary.Guess the meaning from the context(上下文).You may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.

Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they’re studying. They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.

1.In the first paragraph the writer tells us

A.how to speak English

B.how to read and write

C.why spoken English is important

D.why English people couldn’t understand Lenin

2.In his last point the writer advises us

A.to kill two birds with one stone

B.to learn two languages at a time

C.to study all the subjects in a foreign language

D.to get some knowledge of the foreign country whose language you are studying.

3.In the fourth paragraph the writer give some advice on

A.how to read faster

B.how to guess the meaning from the context

C.how to look up new words in the dictionary

D.how to grasp the general meaning of a passage

4.“To kill two birds with one stone” means

A.to get some particular knowledge

B.to get more than what one pays

C.the stone is too big

D.the birds are blind enough

WHEN you buy cooking oil in the supermarket, you may notice that some brands are labeled as “GM (genetically modified)-free”. So, what is genetic modification? Are GM foods safe?

These questions have been put back into the spotlight recently. On Nov 19, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US announced that it had approved the AquAdvantage salmon (三文鱼) to go on the market, making it the first genetically modified animal to be approved as food anywhere in the world.

GM foods are plants or animals that have been given a gene from another plant or animal to make them stronger in some way. The AquAdvantage salmon contains a gene from another type of salmon that makes it grow faster.

Although the FDA has said “food from the fish is safe to eat”, some believe that scientists can’t completely understand the potential health risks of GM foods, simply because they’re so new. Others worry that the fish could escape into the wild and cause ecological (生态的) problems.

GM crops have experienced the same controversy, even though GM technology cuts down on the use of pesticides (杀虫剂) on crops and increases yields.

While GM animals are new, GM crops have already appeared on our plates. A total of 28 countries in the world including the US, Brazil and India planted 181.5 million hectares (1.815 million km2) of GM crops in 2014, according to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications. In China, we grow GM cotton and papaya (木瓜) and import GM soybeans, corn, rape (油菜), cotton and beets (甜菜) from abroad.

Due to safety worries, many countries have regulations for producing and selling GM food.

In European Union countries, each GM food must be approved before it can be used. This process can take up to 17 months. The origin of all GM foods must also be traceable (可追溯的) , and all food with a GM content of more than 0.9 percent must also be labeled, according to EU website europa.eu.

The US is less strict about GM foods. According to FDA regulations, companies introducing new GM foods to the market should report them at least 120 days before release. The labeling is voluntary (自愿的), except that a product cannot be labeled as “GM-free” if genetically modified materials are used.

In China, GM foods can only be produced after strict tests by the Ministry of Agriculture say that they are safe. All food that is made from GM crops or contains GM ingredients must be clearly labeled on the wrapper (包装).

1.According to the text, the AquAdvantage salmon ______.

A. tastes better than normal salmon

B. is a product that mixes several types of fish

C. has a gene from a different type of salmon

D. remains to be approved in several countries

2.One of the reasons for many people to worry about the AquAdvantage salmon is that ______.

A. the gene that makes them grow faster can work on humans too

B. there are possible health risks that even scientists might not have figured out yet

C. they could possibly become threats to other wild species

D. they are not nutritious enough or might taste strange

3.From the text, it can be concluded that GM crops _____.

A. no longer cause any controversy

B. have already been planted in some countries

C. are popular because they don’t need pesticides

D. can increase yields, making them welcome in countries like Japan

4.Which of the following is TRUE about regulations for producing and selling GM food?

A. All food with GM content must be labeled in European countries.

B. In the US, the AquAdvantage salmon will have to be labeled as GM food.

C. In France, every GM food that is about to go on the market must be reported at least 120 days before release.

D. In China, all food that is made from GM crops or contains GM ingredients must be clearly labeled on the package.

The hottest apps

IF you’re one of those people who likes to take a look at their phone from time to time, you’re not alone. Using apps has now become part of everyday life. But with so many on the market that claim to be the best, which ones should you download onto your phone to have fun with? Below, four have been picked out for you.

Evernote

In the world of note taking, Evernote is the king. It allows users to create electronic files such as text, photos, audio, and videos. It also lets you organize your files, tag (标记) them, and search them easily.

One of the most useful features on the app, though, is being able to log onto any device with your Evernote account and use your files. The app automatically stores your content in the cloud storage, and syncs (同步) it with your other devices.

Another feature that is new in the latest version of the Evernote app is “Places”, which allows you to sort the files, photos, audio or video you have created by the location where you created them.

So if you need some organization in your life, Evernote is the app for you.

Candy Crush Soda Saga

The original Candy Crush Saga took the world by storm, leaving millions addicted to its endless candy-popping levels.

But now there is a new challenge: Candy Crush Soda Saga. The app is similar to the original, but different enough to draw you in with a few new features. The app is still a match-3 game, which means that you have to move a piece of candy until there are three matching ones.

There are a few new features, though, such as soda bottles, which burst into purple liquid when you match three of them. There are also hidden gummy (粘性的) bears in this new version, and to complete the levels, you must clear the candies to reveal the hidden bear. These new features make the game a little harder than the old version, and you can expect to spend more time on each level.

So if you liked the original Candy Crush game, Candy Crush Soda Saga will be a new treat with much of the same fun as before.

Moment Cam

Moment Cam brings you some of the most useful and wanted features a camera app can have, such as adjusting the flash, sequence shots (连拍), adjusting the timer, and selecting different-sized frames for photo sharing sites. But what sets the app apart from all the others is the selection of simple, minimal buttons that you hardly notice are there.

The best thing about the app is not what it does, but what it leaves out. For once this app is not full of too many confusing and useless features. Instead, it is simple, clean, and easy to use. If you love taking photos on your phone, Moment Cam might be just what you never knew you were looking for.

Lychee FM

You may have listened to a lot of radio programs. Do you now dream of making your own? With Lychee FM, you no longer need expensive hardware and complex software to do just that. You can record your shows and finish editing them within the app. Then you can upload your program to all the listeners on Lychee FM or share it through your social networks.

Apart from making your own programs, you can also listen to more than 15,000 stations through Lychee FM. One such popular show is called nühanzi, meaning “tough girls”. It discusses how women can handle just about everything. There are also shows on many other topics like sports, comedy, and music. The hosts include famous people such as music producer Gao Xiaosong, and many other creative people.
