Marlin Perkins' keen interest in animals, especially snakes, brought him a lot of trouble when he was young. His landlady never excused him for keeping snakes in his closet. After two years of college, he left school and found a job in a zoo, sweeping the sidewalks for 3 .50 a day. He was very happy about it because he could now watch animals and study them all day long. He soon became an offical in charge of reptiles (爬行动物) and then director of the Buffalo Zoo.

Through his snake-hunting expeditions (探险), Perkins won his fame as a snake expert. His love for snakes is such that he thinks of them in terms of (根据) personalities. However, snakes do not have the universal appeal as he wishes. Even Perkns' most favorite animal Bushman, the 550-pound toughest African ape, was frightened by snakes. Bushman once escaped form his cage. Nothing could draw him back. Finally a keeper went to the reptile house, got three little snakes, and dangled(摇晃) them toward Bushman. The great ape nearly tore the palce apart getting back to the safety of his cage.

Perkins likes all animals and takes more interest in them than many parents take in their own children. He keeps daily records on all the baby animals, takes their temperature and watches their diet (饮食)strictly. Speaking about his success, Perkins sums up his philosophy(哲学) of life as follows:“My life has taught me that the surest path to success is to find out what you most enjoy doing, then set about to do it.”

The English theatre

The most important period in the history of the English theatre was the reign (王朝)of Queen Elizabeth I when William Shake spear was alive, Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He was the only author of the period hat people seem to know about, although students of literature(文学)and drama(剧) know about others as well—writers like Kyd and Marlowe, Shakespeare’s plays were as popular then as they are now, and the theatre was probably the most popular form of entertainment available at that time.

In 1642, however, the theatres were closed because Oliver Gromwell who was ruling England at that time, thought theatres were immoral(不正经) places. The theatre was made legal(合法)—that is to say they were allowed to open again—when CharlesⅡ became King after he had been forced to live on the Continent while gromwell was in Power.

When we found him,he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him,we saw him fall.He lay a moment Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.

After we got him out,we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.

We found him just in time.

This man, like others before him,had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk,if he had made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.

Whatever sense of direction that a man may have,it's still largely a question of observation.A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind,he is still likely to turn around many times.but he is seldom lost.

There are exceptions.of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the“lost”situation.A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass(指南针)in his Darkness.Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.

When this happens, the normal first reaction(反应)is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn't show up.This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.

The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He'll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

Computers are popular with the people all over world, which give people new
choices about how to spend their time.
Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members,
but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most
about. I know this from personal experience.
E-mall makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends
and evenings. My working hours aren't necessarily much shorter than they once were,
but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young
daughter than I might have if she' d been born before electronic marl became such a
practical tool.
The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you
do something fun -- see a great movie perhaps and there are four or five friends who
might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may be tired of telling the story.
With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience at your convenience
and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your
message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply
jt their convenience and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.
E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far
away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with
their children off at college.
We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of
staying in touch. They don't take the place of any of the old ways.
