    5．What do you usually have for lunch？Indeed，for many of us，meat has been part of our diet for years．
    For your American peers，however，school lunch might have to change this year-there could be less meat and more fruits，vegetables，nuts，whole grains and other plant-based foods for them in future．
    Their new diet would encourage Americans to eat more healthily．But it could mean much more than that．According to the Fox Business website，the new school lunch also looks at what is healthy for the environment．A diet higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods causes"less environmental damage than the current average US diet"，a research from a US government committee said．
    No matter how tasty you think meat is，it seems to be causing problems for the environment．Researchers from the International Livestock（家禽）Research Institute in Kenya and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria looked at the livestock industry around the world and found that it is adding to climate change．
    In poorer countries like Ethiopia and Somalia，1，000kg of carbon is produced for every kilogram of protein produced by cattle．This happens because of the methane（甲烷）gas that comes from the cattle's manure（粪便）．When forests are cut down to make land for livestock like cattle，the trees can no longer absorb carbon，which then goes to the atmosphere．
    Although groups like the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in the US are unhappy with the idea，environmental groups would be happy if the changes happened．"We need to make sure we think about our natural resources and the need to reduce climate change when we choose our diets，"said Karl Hamerschlag of the group Friends of the Earth．

    Ahwelah，Cook Expedition
    I joined Frederick Cook's expedition to the North Pole in August 1907．I am an Inuit and I know how to survive in the Arctic．We set off from Greenland in February 1908．By April we were close to the North Pole．It was hard；the ice was broken and we had to push the sleds up and down the walls of ice．However on 21April，Dr．Cook calculated our location with his scientific instruments and told us we were there．We were very happy，because we were really at the top of the world!
    Matthew，Peary Expedition
    When Robert Peary set out for the North Pole in 1908，I was proud to be chosen to join him．We set out from New York City on a hot day in July 1908，accompanied by sleds and dogs pulling our supplies．When we got to the North Pole in April 1909，we checked carefully with our scientific instruments．It was a great moment when we found we had made it．We hugged each other and jumped up and down with happiness．I knew this was true，because I was there．
    Oscar，Amundsen Expedition
    The great explorer Norwegian，Ronald Amundsen，was definitely the first to fly over the North Pole．In 1926，I was lucky to join him on an airship，the Norge，which flew across the North Pole on its way from Spitsbergen to Alaska．Amundsen took careful readings indicated by the instruments as we crossed the great white ocean，and when we reached the North Pole we all cheered and had a drink to celebrate．
