    In reality，all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives．One person，on losing a job or a special reltionship，may feelas if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months，years，or even a lifetime．Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the sadness，then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life．

    In 1977，Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature's mind by talking to it．Her first experiments began with Alex．Alex was a one-year-old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language．"I thought if he learned to communicate，I could ask him questions about how he sees the world．"

    In the end each of us has so little time．We have less of it than we can possibly imagine．And even thought it turns out that Kathy's cancer has not spread，and her prognosis（诊断） is good，we try to make it all count now，enjoying every part of every day．
