    Research suggests many of us are likely to respond"no"，and public support for spanking （打屁股） has been falling over the years．But surveys also show that 75percent to nearly 90percent of parents admit spanking their child at least once．

    Murray Straus，professor at the University of New Hampshire in America，has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades．He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers．It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked，but the punishment may have been counterproductive （反作用的） to their mental development，as well．
    Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks （用巴掌打） on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit．
    Last year，Marjorie Gunnoe，a psychologist at Calvin College，studied teens who have never been spanked．There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished．Gunnoe's research suggests they don't turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked．
    There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers．But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline （纪律） without ever turning to physical punishment．

    An extended family is the one that enlarges beyond the immediate family，which can consist of grandparents，uncles，aunts，cousins and so on，living under a single roof．There are certain advantages to such family groups．The members （especially children） feel more secure and safe due to elder guidance and sharing of resources during a crisis，and have more role models to help maintain desired etiquette and values．
    Childless Family （Child-free Companions!）
    While most people think of family as including children，there are couples who are very young and intend to have children later，or those who cannot，or choose not to have children．This type is also called the"forgotten family"，as it does not meet the set in definition of family．It has been observed that many of the childless families own pets or have external contacts with their nieces and nephews as a substitute for having their own children．
    As you can see，there are various family structures．The American society tends to promote the traditional family through various media； children who fall under other categories may feel that theirs is not a real family．They may get self-conscious about being part of a family which is"different"．In some cases，they might face social challenges，too．

    1．Anxiety has now surpassed depression as the most common mental health disease among college students，though depression，too，is on the rise．More than half of students visiting campus clinics cite anxiety as a health concern，according to a recent study of more than 100，000students nationwide by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State．Nearly one in six college students has been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety within the last 12months，according to the annual national survey by the American College Health Association．
    The causes range widely，experts say，from mounting academic pressure at earlier ages to overprotective parents to engagement with social media．Anxiety has always played a role in the development of a student's life，but now more students experience anxiety so acute that they are seeking professional help．Like many college clinics，the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Central Florida （UCF）-one of the country's largest and fastest-growing universities，has seen sharp increases in the number of clients：15.2percent over last year alone．
    Anxiety has become characteristic of the current generation of college students，said Dan Jones，the director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Appalachian State University in Boone，N．C．Because of increasingly pressures during high school，he and other experts say，students arrive at college preloaded with stress．Accustomed to extreme parental oversight，many seem unable to govern themselves．And with parents so accessible，students have had less incentive to develop life skills．"They can't tolerate discomfort or having to struggle，"Dr Jones said．
