Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.

WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the tiny ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because particles (粒子) taken in by people can enter the lungs and cause breathing problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.

Other experts, however, weren't convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples' health and said WHO's warnings were "hysterical." They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder(滑石粉). During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation (过敏) even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say.

"Not all particles are created equal," said Ken Donaldson, a professor at the University of Edinburgh, "In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful." And he said most Europeans' exposure to volcanic ash would be ignored and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.

Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. "The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven't heard of any ill effects there," he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was "over the top" and "a bit hysterical."

A. The volcanic ash’s effects on Europeans were little.

B. The ash caused irritation even in healthy people.

C. Other experts thought WTO’S warnings were useful.

D. The volcanic ash was more dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution.

74. The underlined word “hysterical” in Paragraph4 most probably means .

A. practical B. overstated C. valuable D. amazing

75. What can we learn from paragraph 4 ?

A. The volcanic ash wouldn’t be harmful to people.

B. All experts thought the volcanic ash did great harm to our health.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way(银河系)? While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut eye.

They would have to sleep for years.

European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a spaceflight to distant planets. “If there was an effective technology, it could make deep space travel a reality.” said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.

What seems like a science fiction is not completely unlikely.Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep like state where they don't age. They have now moved on to the small, nonhibernating mammals(哺乳动物)like rats.

A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex(复杂的). “It's like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer,” Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person's metabolism(新陈代谢)to lower so they would need less energy.

Medical research, however, is just half of a spaceflight hibernation system. There is a challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter(栖身所).Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor(监控)life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.

According to Ayre, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission(使命)to Jupiter's moon(木星的卫星)Callisto could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six persons on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.

Demands for stronger protection for wildlife in Britain sometimes hide the fact that similar needs are felt in the rest of Europe. Studies by the Council of Europe, of which 21 countries are members, have shown that 45 per cent of reptile (爬行动物) species and 24 per cent of butterflies are in danger or dying out.

European concern for wildlife was outlined by Dr Peter Baum, an expert in the environment and natural resources division of the council, when he spoke at a conference arranged by the administrators of a British national park. The park is one of the few areas in Europe to hold the council’s diploma for nature reserves of the highest quality, and Dr Baum had come to present it to the park once again. He was afraid that public opinion was turning against national parks, and that those set up in the 1960s and 1970s could not be set up today. But Dr Baum clearly remained a strong supporter of the view that natural environments needed to be allowed to survive in peace in their own right.

“No area could be expected to survive both as a true nature reserve and as a tourist attraction,” he went on. The shortsighted view that reserves had to serve immediate human demands for outdoor recreation should be replaced by full acceptance of their importance as places to preserve nature for the future.

“We forget that they are the guarantee (保证) of life systems, on which any built-up area depends,” Dr Baum went on. “We could manage without most industrial products, but we could not manage without nature. However, our natural environment areas, which are the original parts of our countryside, have become mere islands in a spoiled and highly polluted land.”

59. Recent studies by the Council of Europe have declared that ____ .

 A. wildlife needs more protection only in Britain

 B. all species of wildlife in Europe are in danger of dying out

 C. there are fewer species of reptiles and butterflies in Europe than elsewhere

 D. many species of reptiles and butterflies in Europe need protecting

60. Why did Dr Baum come to a British national park?

 A. Because he needed to present it with a council's diploma.

 B. Because he was concerned about its management.

 C. Because it was the only national park of its kind in Europe.

 D. Because it was the only park that had ever received a diploma from the council.

61. The last sentence in the second paragraph implies that ____ .

 A. people should make every effort to create more environment areas

 B. people would go on protecting national parks

 C. certain areas of the countryside should be left intact (完整的)

 D. people would defend the right to develop the areas around national parks

62.Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

 A. We have developed industry at the expense of countryside.

 B. We have forgotten what our original countryside looked like.

 C. People living on islands should protect natural resources for their survival.

 D. We should destroy all the built-up areas.
