A few years ago, my younger brother and I went to Norfolk, Virginian by plane. , before we took off, we heard the pilot's voice throughout the plane, “Sorry, ladies and gentlemen. We have no on the plane. We have a generator(发电机), and we are going to the engines with it. We will in the air and head to Norfolk, and see what happens. ”

See what happens? We are going to get up in the air, and see what happens? At this point, one woman started crying. “Oh, no! We are going to !” There were sighs of and anxiety quickly spreading throughout the plane, and we hadn't even yet. Thirty minutes passed and we were still there. Then the voice of the pilot came over again,“ Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are , so are we. We only have one engine going right now, and it is working double time. ”

There was crying we had walked in to grave(坟墓). But the pilot told us our one engine was working double time, and his was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air and happened. We arrived in Norfolk and everyone for still being alive.

Although I do sincerely like to have a plan “see what happens”, it really isn’t such a bad life strategy. All too often, I would see people pursuing their goals with inaction just because they don’t have success. Actually, success will never be guaranteed. The thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens.

If you are planning to learn a new skill, “get up in the air, and see what happens!” It might not be as as you thought. You might be smarter than you thought, and the result could be very ! So don’t stay there trying nothing just because there is no of guaranteed success.

I grew up in Jamaica Plain. My best friend Rose and I used to dream about raising a family of our own someday and living next door to one another.

Our dream remained alive through school and beyond. Rose was my maid of honor when I married Dick. Later, Dick was stationed in Alaska and we moved. Rose was sad to see me leave, but wished me the best of luck. We remained in touch for a few years before we lost track.

I thought of her several times over the years. All of my children now have families of their own, and Dick passed away a few years ago. Basically, a lifetime has passed. Then one day, near my 80th birthday, I received a phone call “Hi Natalie, it’s Rose,” the voice on the other end said, “ I don’t know if you remember me, but we used to be best friends in Jamaica Plain when we were kids.”

We have spent hours on the phone catching up. Even after 52 years of separation our personalities and interests are still extremely similar. We both share a passion for several hobbies that we each picked up independently several years after we lost touch with one another. It almost feels like we are picking up right where we left off.

Her husband died a few years ago as well, but she mailed me several photographs of her family that were taken over the years. It’s so crazy, just looking at the photos and listening to her description of her family reminds me of my own: a reasonably large, healthy family. Part of me feels like we led fairly similar lives.

I don’t think the similarities between our two lives are a coincidence either. I think it shows that we didn’t just call each other best friend; we truly were best friends and even now we can be best friends again. Real friends have two things in common: a compatible(相容的)personality and a strong-willed character. The compatible personality is what starts the connection between two people.

A strong-willed character at both ends is what maintains the connection. If those two ingredients are present in a friendship, the friendship is for real, It can pass the tests of time and long distance between one another and will never disappear.

1.From the passage we may know that the author .

A. lived next door to Rose in her childhood

B.was Rose’s maid of honor when she was married

C.lost touch of Rose since she moved to Alaska

D. missed her friend although they lost contact

2.After 52 years of separation, they .

A.had a lot to talk on the phone

B. sent each other photographs of their family

C.they lived the same life

D. developed different personalities and hobbies

3. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 6 refers to .

A. Rose’s description

B. coincidence

C. best friend

D. the similarities between our two lives

4.The author thinks that .

A. the similarities between their lives are coincident

B. although they’re not best friends, they have much in commom.

C. they both have a compatible personality and a strong-willed character

D. only those who have similar characters can be real friends

Charlie Vansant, a college student of Athens, Ohio who reported that his car was stolen, got a surprise when he learned a woman had mistaken it for her daughter's car and taken it-using her key.

Kate Anderson became an accidental car thief when picking up her daughter's car near an Ohio University building last week. Anderson spotted the Toyota Camry(丰田凯美瑞)and used her daughter's key to unlock the car, start the engine and drive home-without realizing that the car wasn't her daughter's.

When Charlie Vansant left class a short time later, he found only an empty parking spot. He first assumed the car had been towed, but when the police couldn't find a record of it, they took a theft report.

The morning after Anderson took the car, her daughter discovered the Camry in the driveway wasn't hers. Anderson said she was able to find Vansant's name on paperwork in the glove compartment and look up his phone number on the website for the university.

When Anderson told Charlie the car was in her driveway, "It sounded real suspicious at first, as she wanted to hold the thing for ransom(赎金),” said Vansant. He eventually went to the house with a police officer, where he was reunited with his car. According to the police report, the case was closed "because of mistaken car identity", Anderson wasn't charged.

Vansant seemed to blame the car company more than the "thief". "Her key fit not only my lock, but my ignition(点火装置) as well - so high-five for Toyota. I guess." he said.

This was my grandmother's first Christmas without grandfather, and before he passed away we had promised grandfather that we would make this her best Christmas ever. When my parents and I at her house, we found she had waited up all night for us. The house did seem a little without grandfather.

Grandfather had always said that the Christmas was the most important decoration of all. So we immediately set to work on the beautiful artificial tree that was stored in grandfather's closet (壁橱). Through our efforts, we finally stepped back to our handiwork. It looked beautiful. something was missing.

"Where's your star?" I asked.

The star was my grandmother's favorite part of the tree.

"Why, it be here somewhere," she said, starting to sort through the boxes again. "Your grandfather always everything so carefully when he took the tree down."

As we emptied the boxes and no star, my grandmother's eyes filled with tears. Grandfather had given it to grandmother some fifty years ago on their first Christmas together. It brought them great happiness. Now, on her first Christmas without him, the star was , too.

"Don't worry, Grandmother," I her. "We'll find it for you."
