Patti discovered the meaning of running when she was 23. At that time she was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day and had1over 50 pounds. “I decided to2,” she says. She took a clock and started3what she did every day, and then she4an hour a day as a “be nice to Patti” hour. “I started having bubble(泡沫)baths with a candle5, because Cosmopolitan Magazine6that this would be good for me. But I got7of that soon,” Patti remembers. She wanted to do something really pleasant. She found that the8times in her life were times when she was physically active. So she took up9.
She decided to start10the next day. She ran for an hour, 11a total of 7 miles on her first run. “I couldn’t walk for 2 weeks 12I felt painful all over!” Patti recalls. “But I felt so wonderful!” Patti wasn’t crazy about running yet, but she was in13with the after effects of it.
Within seven months, Patti had run her first marathon, qualified for the Boston Marathon, and placed 25th in the world for14distance runners. Over the next years, she15records and set standards for women in the sport. She was the first American woman to run a marathon16than 2 hours 30 minutes, and then broke another two records17an 8-month period.
Patti believes that, if we can18standards for ourselves, we can pull ourselves out of the most difficult19and come out on top. “Everybody has to be a/an20and everybody has that in them.”

Dad came in the midnight. We heard every sound, but we pretended to be asleep.
Next morning he looked weak and thin, sitting in a chair by the kitchen fire. The light of the fire shone through his long empty sleeve. Everything went as usual. Grandma found something to do in the bedroom. Grandpa went out for some water. Mother, with her back to us, was getting the cakes ready for breakfast.
But nothing was right. When grandma came out of the bedroom, she walked on tiptoe. When grandpa came back, he said nothing about the weather. At breakfast Mother passed us the fruit and said something, but her voice was too high.
At last my sister, Lou, pushed back her chair. “It’s your turn to wash the dishes.” But I had washed the dishes the night before. I said nothing because it was not right to quarrel in front of Dad just home with the empty sleeve.
“It is your turn,” Lou said again. I looked at her in surprise.
“It is not,” I said because I suddenly remembered Mother had told us to go on as usual.
“Children, children,” Mother said in a quiet, glad kind of voice.
And Dad was smiling because he felt at home at last

My friend John always has something to tell me. He knows so much that 1 men have to have older and more worldly wise men to tell them, 2, who to trust, how to care for others and how to live life 3 the fullest.

The birthrate in Europe has been in a steady decrease since the 1960s. European countries, realizing crisis is at hand, are providing great encouragement for parents to create more babies in the 2lst century.
Affairs Ministry concluded last year that, 1 cash encouragement, some women just don’t want to be 2 holding the baby. “What we know is that it’s good for the 3 if men and women share the burden of having children, says Soren Kindlund, family policy adviser at the Swedish ministry. 4 Swedish parents can take their paid leave as they wish, men use a mere 12% of it; 60% of fathers do not take even a(n)5 day off work.
Experts fear that the tendency for women to use most of the parental leave could make employers6 to give young women the permanent jobs they need to qualify for paid maternity leave(产假). In January, Sweden decided to allow new fathers two months paid leave, with a warning: use it or7 it.
Kindlund admits that men are under 8 to stay at work, even though parental pay comes out of the public purse. “It’s not popular among bosses and perhaps with other men in the workplace,. “But it’s good for the father and for the child if they can 9 a relationship. ”
In Norway, a(n)10 policy has worked wonders. 70% of dads in Norway now take parental leave, and the birthrate of 1. 85 children per woman is one of the highest in Europe.

That14has been staying with me ever since. I have been15about some problems. Why in many schools are our children16asked to acquire skills in a way 17from a real-life context(情境)? Why does a18school child so often become a defeated school failure?
Developmental psychologist Margaret Donald once said,”19of the intellectual framework (知识框架) on which we20our teaching is misleading.” In my opinion, a child learns everything in human situation. And if every child could learn in the same way as the children in the school I visited, they would develop better.

Homework is work, not play. In contrast to what some might hope, students1finish their homework exclaiming that they had great fun. Nor is homework an activity that students choose to undertake. It is2by a teacher for students to complete on the teacher’s schedule, with the teacher’s requirements in mind. So to have the fight3Will be of great help. Homework means business and the student should expect to work on it seriously. As in the work place, careless efforts and lack of self-discipline are likely to make the 4impression.
Teachers assign homework for 5purposes. In some cases, teachers seek to review and solidify material being covered in class; homework is also designed to6student learning beyond class lessons. As students mature, teachers often assign homework nightly in several subjects. Homework is also used to prepare students to handle new work,7 in the ease of summer reading. Increasingly, school reforms call for homework to take the form of course projects, thus increasing its 8to “real-life” job-related activity.
Like jobs, homework can be appealing when its resources are well managed. Resources9sources of information—textbooks, of course, and increasingly, the Internet—but they also include a quiet space to work, materials and equipment such as calculators, paper or a computer, and others who cohabit (共面存在) in the homework environment. The external (外部的) resources needed for homework can be viewed as a kind of10. office for the child with features like those needed in the workplace.
