    　　Be more popular, get better grades, have more pocket money．．．A teenager's life seems far from trouble-free．However, American author Daniel Gottlieb disagrees．

    　　In his book, Learning From the Heart：Lessons on Living, Loving and Listening, Gottlieb says that people should listen to the voices of others and to their own hearts and learn to feel comfortable with who they are．

    　　In most people's eyes, Gottlieb, 60, might be uncomfortable with himself．He became paralyzed(瘫痪)due to an accident that happened when he was 30．He went through a terrible divorce(离婚)and his second wife got cancer．He had to try hard to communicate with his autistic(患有自闭症的)grandchild．

    　　Yet in his book, Gottlieb manages to see the silver lining to every cloud．He writes that being paralyzed brings him great parking spaces．He doesn't need to spend money on shoes．More importantly, he learns that what he really wants is to stop wanting to become or to have something that he simply cannot be or have．

    　　"Because of my dilferentness, I have not been intimidated(胁迫)by my need to be like everyone rise," he writes．"I might not have become the man I am today were-it not for this trauma(伤害)．"

    　　Perhaps, the best side of being paralyzed for Gottlieb is that he becomes an outsider among people?"like a foreign reporter", as he puts it．He acutely(敏锐的)observes the way people act, think and live, and puts his observations into the pages of Learning From the Hears．Its Chinese version will be released in January next year．

    Some years ago, a Miami woman walking through an office building noticed two men standing together．Several minutes after her leaving, the men murdered a person working in the building．The police determined that the woman was the only witness and could possibly describe them．However, her memory of the men proved disappointingly unclear．Several days later, psychologist Ronald Fisher was brought in to obtain a more complete account from the woman．His interview produced a breakthrough—the woman reported a clear picture of one of the suspects．The important information enabled the police lo arrest the suspect and close the case．
    The police asked Fisher for help because of his rich knowledge in cognitive interview, a kind of memory - rebuilding process．Memory researchers have found that people trying to remember a past event often only recall part of the relevant information．Human memory is selective and it is often distorted by stress．But a person's accurate recall of an event or understanding of a question can be improved using specific interviewing techniques．The "cognitive interview" was developed in the late 1990s．It encourages the witness to take an active role in recalling information rather than giving answers only to someone else's questions．The witness first describes what happened in his or her own words, with no interviewer interruptions．The interviewer then goes further with specific techniques, such as having the witness tell the details of what happened from different perspectives （角度）．
    The cognitive interview focuses on guiding witnesses through four general recalling techniques: thinking about physical surroundings and personal feelings that existed at the time of past events; reporting everything that conies to mind about those events, no matter how broken it is retelling events in a variety of time orders, such as from beginning to end, end to beginning, forward or backward; and adopting different perspectives while recalling events．

    Robert Frost was one of America’s best known and most honored serious writers. But his fame came late in his life.

    He was born in San Francisco, California in 1874. He lived in California during his early childhood. He was named after the chief Southern general in America’s Civil War. The general’s name was Robert Edward Lee. The poet was named Robert Lee Frost, because his father wanted to honor the general.

    Someone once asked another American writer, Ernest Hemingway, how to become a writer. The best thing, he said, was to have an unhappy childhood. If this is true, Robert Frost’s childhood was unhappy enough to make him a very good writer. Robert Frost’s father was a reporter who wanted to be a politician.     In 1912, he decided to try to make a new start. He took his family to Britain. The cost of living was low. In Britain, Frost found a publisher for his first book of poems. The book was called A Boy’s Will. When it appeared in 1913, Frost received high praise from British readers. Praise was something he had not received in his own country.

    Ezra Pound, another American poet living in Britain, read the poems and liked them very much. He wrote a magazine article about Frost. He also helped get Frost’s second book of poems published in America. That book was called North of Boston.

    Today I was at the mall waiting for friends, when a lady wearing a knit hat and a sweater came up to me and, shivering, said, “I’m homeless. Would you mind buying me some food?”

But now I do.” I immediately felt guilty. How could I be picking at my food across from someone who barely gets to eat at all?

    I tried my best to finish, but she seemed to sense my guilt and said, “You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want it.” How could she know what I was feeling? I told her the dish was my favorite, but I just eat slowly.

    She got up to get a to-go box. “Would you like one?” she asked, but I refused. I realized that this food would probably last her for a few days, and I was glad she had ordered a lot.

    “Would you like these?” I asked, gesturing at the food I had left untouched. “Oh, no, thank you,” she said. “This is enough.” I got up to throw my tray away, feeling guilty again.

    “I need to meet my friends now,” I explained. “It was so nice to meet you, Joyce.”

    I headed to the theater, and she went back downstairs. I kept puzzling, Why is Joyce homeless?  She shouldn’t need people to buy her dinner. She was a nurse. She got good grades.
