In ancient times, the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches.

In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor's degree.

Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines.

One type of test is sometimes called as“objective”test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

(1)Which of the following statements is true about the students in the Middle Ages?

[ ]

A.They took objective tests.

B.They specialized in one subject.

C.They were timed by electrical clocks.

D.They usually took spoken tests.

(2)The main idea of Paragraph 3 is that _________.

[ ]

A.workers now take examinations

B.the population had grown rapidly

C.there are only written exams today

D.examinations are now written and timed

(3)Modern industry must have developed __________.

[ ]

A.before the Middle Ages

B.around the 19th century

C.in Greece or Rome

D.machines to take tests

(4)It may be concluded from the passage that testing ___________.

A.should test only opinions

B.should always be written

C.has changed since the Middle Ages

D.is given only in factories

(3)见文章第三段的第二、三句,意为:笔试可能始于19世纪,在这样的考试中学生们都被测试同样的问题。也许笔试是伴随着人口的剧增和现代工业的发展而产生的,故选B

To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented for the protection against rain. Its first use was a shade against the sun.

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were Chinese, back in the eleventh century B. C.

In Europe the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the use of umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And the umbrella was considered as a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and later in England.

科目:高中英语 来源: 题型:阅读理解

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother’s Day? Cards, flowers, sales, TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it ---- those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother’s Day. But there’s more to the story.

The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The celebrations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600’s, England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.

In the US, Mother’s Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn’t really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis stared a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn’t alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.

Learning more about Mother’s Day and celebrating Mother’s Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother, or grandmother, or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.

    A. Rhea is the mother of a king in ancient Greece

    B. not all the countries celebrate Mother’s Day in May

    C. only mothers were given a day off on Mothering Sunday

    D. it was in 1872 that Mother’s Day really came into being

66. The last paragraph tells us that _____.

    A. all the people should celebrate Mother’s Day

    B. only mothers are honored on Mother’s Day

    C. understanding mothers’ work is more important than just celebrating Mother’s Day

    D. people should celebrate Mother’s Day every day
