Where is my home?

Some fish are forced to leave polluted water and are flying in the sky But unfortunately, air is also so polluted that they have to wear masks. Each of them is crying, “Where is my home?” What a terrible sight!

Mankind has brought so much pollution.Waste is being poured into rivers and seas. Poisons to kill pests in farming and chemicals go into rivers and seas, too.Poisonous gasses from factories also make the air so dirty. The whole balance of nature is being destroyed as a result of our ignorance of the environmental protection.

Personally, man can not live alone on the earth.Should fish die from serious pollution, so would man! It is high time we did something to prevent such a scene from happening.(114 words)

I was born an albino. No one in my family had ever known what an albino was, what it meant to be an albino, and what had to be done differently because I was an albino.

My parents treated me just like they treated everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done.It helped me trust myself,so when the annoyances came along,I could deal with them.

True,my photo always looked like a snowball with two pieces of coal for eyes.Kids would tease me,asking if I was joining the circus and calling me “Whitey”.Like most albinos,I had terrible eyesight, and my grades suffered until eventually I overcame my feeling ashamed of myself and realized it was okay to ask to sit in the front of the classroom so I could see the blackboard better.People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read. Even when I was eight or nine,movie-theater clerks started asking me to pay adult prices because I “looked older”.

The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad,I couldn’t play sports very well.I didn’t give up trying, though. And I studied harder.

Eventually,I got better at school and loved it.By the time I got to college I was double majoring, going to summer school and devoting myself to every kind of extracurricular activity I could find. I had learned to be proud of being an albino.I did my best to make “albino” a positive word. And I decided to make my living with my eyes.

I couldn’t see well enough to play sports, but with a solid education and the drive to do it, I could make a living involved in the field I love                        I’ve done it now for more than thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace.People make jokes about how I’m the only “blind editor” they know, but most of the time the jokes are signs of respect. And I make jokes about being an albino.

I was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania. I now realize that being born an albino helped me to overcome difficulties, gain confidence, and be proud of my personal achievement and humble about my professional accomplishments.

1.What is an “albino” according to the passage?

    A.Someone with bad eyesight.

B.Someone with some kind of disease.

C.Someone who looks older than his age.

    D.Someone who joins the circus.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.The author’s study was affected by his eyesight at first.

B.The author had to pay adult prices for movies when he was still young.

C.Despite his bad eyesight, the author played sports well.

D.“Albino” has already become a positive word now.

3.Why are people’s jokes about the author mostly signs of respect?

    A.Because he is an albino.

B.Because he has a solid education.

C.Because they think he is a great “blind editor”.

D.Because they think he is proud of his achievement.

Pets are no strangers to the White House. Many of American Presidents have been animal lovers. In recent times, White House pets have been tame dogs and cats. Long ago, however, presidential pets, like our nation itself, were wilder!

In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson lived in the White House. Passers-by often caught sight of his pet bears. Explorers had discovered these fierce bears, caught a pair of small ones, and sent them to Jefferson. While the President was excited about his bears, his enemies in Congress constantly laughed at his pets, calling the White House “The President’s Bear Garden”

By 1825, the bears were long gone from the White House scene. Now, the building was home to President John Quincy Adams and his crocodile. The green beast actually belonged to General Lafayette, a French hero who had helped the United States win the Revolutionary War. When Lafayette asked Adams to keep the crocodile for him, the President couldn’t refuse. While President Adams babysat the huge crocodile, First Lady Louisa Adams was busy raising thousands of silkworms. She used the silk from the silkworms to make cloth for her dresses.

When President Martin Van Buren moved into the White House in 1837, he brought his tigers with him. At first, Van Buren said the tigers were his. The Sultan of Oman had sent the tigers when Van Buren was elected, so Congress argued that the tigers belonged to the American people. A fight over the tigers continued for months. In the end, Congress sent someone to seize the tigers and put them in a zoo.

Twenty years later, President James Buchanan received another valuable gift when he was in his first year in the White House. This time, the King of Siam sent several elephants! Buchanan had no desire to share his building with the big creatures, so he sent them to the zoo. Buchanan did, however, keep another gift—a pair of birds. They were a fitting symbol of presidential power.

1.How did the Presidents mentioned get their unusual pets?

A.The pets were given to them by others.  B.They bought them at the market

C.They got them in the forest.             D.Their family members offered them the pets

2.What similar political effect did Jefferson’s bears and Van Buren’s tigers have?

B.It took them too much time to look after them.

C.It brought about dissatisfaction with them in Congress.

D.It made people believe that they were animal lovers.

3.According to the passage, we can infer that ________.

A.the pets the Presidents raised were all huge ones

B.the pets the Presidents owned were all their favorite ones

C.the Presidents kept the pets not only at home but in the zoo

D.the Presidents’ pets were not only cared about by their families

4. The passage mainly tells us _______

A.The president’s bear garden           B.Historical American presidents’ pets

C.The White House as a zoo              D.American presidents’ favorites

Many people wonder why the United States has been a hotspot for Chinese students for years, despite its extremely strict visa policy. On the other hand, China’s rise as an economic powerhouse is resulting in a rapid expansion of its higher education system, making it the faster-growing destination for American foreign exchange students.

Recently, according to a study by the Institute of International Education, a research organization based in New York, the number of American students seeking higher education in China has never been greater, increasing by 90 percent from 2002 to 2004. Alan Goodman, president of the institute, believes that the phenomenon lies in the pace of change in China, which is spending billions of dollars to expend and transform its higher educational facilities into world-class institutions.

“China is a job market,” said Professor Chou, professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University. “Twenty years ago, only those interested in Chinese literature would study Chinese language. Now all professors have opened up.”

China now ranks 9th as a host destination for American students, advancing from the No.12 spot it held a year earlier. The study revealed that Britain continues to be the leading destination, attracting 16.8 percent of all American students who study abroad. On the other hand, in the 2004-2005 academic year, China sent more than 62,000 students to the United States, nearly 60 percent more than a decade earlier. According to the study, the Chinese now make up 11 percent of foreign students in the United States, the second-largest group behind students from India.
