                                                        Communication Principles
How you see yourself can make a great difference in how you communicate. "Every individual exists
in a continually changing world of experience of which he (or she) is the center". Many communication
scholars and social scientists believe that people are products of how others treat them and of the messages
others send them. But every day we experience the centrality of our selves in communication. A student,
for instance, may describe a conflict with a teacher as unfair treatment:"I know my teacher doesn't like the
fact that I don't agree with his opinions and that's why he gave me such a poor grade in that class. "The
teacher might say the opposite. Each person may believe that he is correct and that the other person's view
is wrong.
The concept of self originates in communication. Through verbal and nonverbal symbols, a child learns
to accept roles in response to the expectations of others. You establish self-image. The sort of person you
believe you are, by how others think of you. Positive, negative, and neutral messages that you receive from
others all play a role in determining who you are. Communication itself is probably best understood as a
dialogue process. Our understanding of communication comes from our interactions with other people. In
a more obvious way, communication involves others in the sense that a competent communicator considers
what the other person needs and expects when selecting messages to share. So,the communication begins
with the self, as defined largely by others, and involves others, as defined largely by the self.
Communication occurs almost every minute of your life. If you are not communicating with yourself
(thinking, planning, reacting to the world around you), you are observing others and drawing inferences from
their behavior. Even if the other person did not intend a message for you, you gather observations and draw
specific conclusions. A person yawns and you believe that person is bored with your message. A second
person looks away from you and you conclude that person is not listening to you. A third person smiles
(perhaps because of a memory of a joke he heard recently) and you believe that he is attracted to you. We
are continually picking up meanings from others' behaviors and we are constantly providing behaviors that
have communicative value for them.
More often than not, you may have hurt someone accidentally and you may have tried to explain that you
did not mean that. You may have told the other person that you were sorry for your statement. You may
have made a joke out of your rude statement. Nonetheless, your comment remains both in the mind of the
other person and in your own mind. You cannot go back in time and erase your messages to others.
Communication cannot be reversed (倒退),n or can it be repeated. When you tried to re-create the atmosphere,
the conversation, and the setting, nothing seemed right. Your second experience with a similar setting and
person made far different results.

Kids who receive special education are, without doubt, the hardest working children in any school.
When they are having difficulty learning basic literacy and number concepts, when they break rules,
when they need more services, support and adult attention than their peers, then they are struggling the
hardest. In psychology, we are trained to think that if we are feeling angry or confused when sitting with
a patient, then we are probably feeling just what our patient is feeling. The same is true for students with
disabilities. Whatever we feel when we work with them, they are probably feeling as they work with us.
If you have a disability that affects your education, then you have a brain disorder.Because education,
even in mathematics, is largely verbal (用言辞), most brain disorders responsible for educational disabilities
affect language, and how you process words and ideas in written and oral form. To imagine how much
effort a child with a language disability spends each school day, imagine yourself attending a school today
taught in a language you had a basic understanding of. Imagine though, that while you seem fluent to others,
you have trouble when people talk too fast, use idioms or expressions.
When adults and classmates blame, or criticize kids who receive special education, they are struggling
with their own confusion. It is difficult to imagine the world as it is lived by someone with an educational
disability. It is difficult to understand how someone who can be so "normal" can have so many problems.
It is so easy to imagine that if they just tried harder...without understanding that just to do the ordinary, kids
with disabilities are making an extraordinary effort.
1. What is the purpose of the author by writing the passage?
A. to introduce how hard to be a special education teacher.
B. to think highly of the children with disabilities.
C. to show the disabled have much trouble in understanding.
D. to call on the society to care for the disabled.
2. If a disabled kid learns number concepts, he ______.
A. won't work as hard as a normal.
B. will work double as hard as a normal.
C. will be as patient as the normal.
D. will think of his disability first.
3. If a kid has a disability affecting his education, he will ______.
A. have a hard time using the language.
B. be too foolish to learn maths.
C. not understand what others are saying.
D. have a lot of trouble in remembering words.
4. Before you intend to blame a kid receiving special education, _______.
A. you should try to understand what he is saying.
B. you should imagine the world he lives in.
C. you should imagine yourself in his shoes.
D. you should think of the education he has received.

Dear Aunty,
I work at a supermarket, and another girl and I share tasks we must finish before leaving. But she takes
half an hour to do something I can do in ten minutes. She always has a story to tell me and stops working
when she does. My boss is angry at both of us, but it's not my fault. I don't want to rat on her, but what
else can I do?
                                                                                                                                          Flustered
Dear Flustered,
Let me propose a better way. Make a log of all the tasks you share, then suggest to your boss that for
efficiency your duties could be divided into two separate checklists. If he's reluctant, go to plan B: the next
time this girl starts telling you a story, stop working to listen and call your boss over to hear what a great
storyteller she is. I'm sure he'll take it from there.
                                                                                                                                          Aunty
Dear Aunty,
I'm a college student in the Philippines who wants to be wise with money. I'm not an economics or
business major student and I don't know anything about stocks. But I really want to buy assets and invest.
I receive about 15,000 pesos every school term from my educational plan. I don't have any idea how I should
spend it. I don't want to just buy new clothes, or hang out with my friends because it would not be wise. I
want my money to grow. Please enlighten me.
                                                                                                                                       Fastbreakplay
Dear Fastbreakplay,
Being wise with money is the No. 1 thing to learn. Start with a disciplined and systematic savings plan.
When your savings reach a sizeable amount, then you may start investing. In the meantime, invest in yourself
by reading up on stock markets and capital markets. Follow the news. Before I started investing during my
senior high school years, I had already studied stock market data of the past century as I believe markets tend
to repeat themselves. If you master this skill, you will master your reading of the markets.
                                                                                                                                                  Aunty

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to
your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.
If you say to your children "I am sorry I got angry with you, but .."what follows that's but" can make the
apology ineffective. "I had a bad day" or "your noise was giving me a headache" leaves the person who has
been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.
Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say "I'm sorry you're
upset"; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person
has done.
Then there is the general, all-covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that
was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again.
Saying "I'm useless as a parent" does not commit a person to any specific improvement.
These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish
to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-
apologies.
But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition (悔悟), children still need help to become
aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children
feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-
year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children's expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old
might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing
a parent's clothes without permission is not.
1. According to the author, "tricky" means ____.
A. simple
B. complicated
C. cautious
D. various
2. It is not advisable to use the general, all-covering apology because ____.
A. it is only an empty promise
B. it is not necessary
C. it is neither clear nor effective
D. it is hurtful and insulting
3. In teaching children to say sorry ____.
A. parents should set them a good example
B. parents should be patient and tolerant
C. the significance of it should be involved
D. their ages should be taken into account
4. According to the passage, apologizing properly is ____.
A. a social issue calling for immediate attention
B. a big problem faced by every family
C. a sign of social progress
D. not as simple as it seems

Who are these needed writers? They're ordinary folks like you and me.

                                             Do's and Don'ts in Whale (鲸) Watching
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnston Strait,
where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel (船只)
operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.
● Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back.
● Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.

● Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.
● Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction.
● Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.
● Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.
● When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the
whales and the shore.
● Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200
metres of whales.

If you enjoyed the spring-like sunshine over the weekend and thought the weather has finally turned a
comer, you're sadly mistaken.
Chilly (寒冷) days and grey clouds are forecast for the week-making it far too early to pack away the
winter woollies.
Temperatures will struggle to rise above zero at night and fail to make double figures during the day.
People enjoy the spring sunshine in Sefton Park, Aigburth, Liverpool. Forecasters have predicted a return
to chilly weather this week.
Met office forecaster Charlie said. "It was a nice, dry, bright weekend in many parts and Monday is going
to be a similar affair for many."
"Temperatures will be between 5℃ and 8℃, which is below average for the start of spring."
The sun will disappear from the south of the country after today, with dry but cloudy conditions forecast
for tomorrow and Wednesday.
Wednesday will be warmest of the three, with temperatures peaking at 9℃. But this is still two degrees
below the March average for the district.
Overnight, temperatures will drop sharply with lows of minus 30℃ for the next three nights.
"It will generally stay on the cold side of average," said Mr. Powell.
The March misery comes at the end of the coldest winter for more than 30 years.
Temperatures in December, January and February struggled to stay above zero, with the UK's average
l.5℃, making it the deepest freeze since 1978-79.
It claimed there was just a one-in-seven chance of a cold December to February.
The agency also sadly predicted a "barbecue summer", saying it was "quite optimistic" that it would be
warmer and drier than average.
Following the two mistakes, the Met Office has dropped its long-range seasonal forecasts and will instead
publish a monthly prediction for Britain, updated once a week.
In its defense, it says that while short-term forecasts are extremely accurate, Britain's size and geographical
position makes long-term predictions much more challenging.
It also points out that it gave warning of any heavy falls of snow this winter.
1. According to the passage, the weather on Tuesday in the south might be _____.
[     ]
A. dry but cloudy
B. sunny but chilly
C. sunny and warm
D. cloudy and chilly
2. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
[     ]
A. British people can put away their winter clothes now.
B. The Met Office has shortened its forecast range.
C. The weather forecast becomes more and more accurate.
D. The agency was quite confident of long-term predictions.
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
[     ]
A. The big chill isn't over yet
B. A warm spring finally arrives
C. A heavy snow is on the way
D. The Met Office drops forecasts
4. From the passage, we can conclude _____.
[     ]
A. the weather report is more and more important
B. British people become worried about bad weather
