Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge(海绵), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge.

His mother then said, “ You know, what we have here is a experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can .” The little boy learned that if he the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful !

Instead, he learned that mistakes were just for learning something new, which is, , what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn't ,” we usually learn something from it.

Despite the promising publishing industry in China today, many Chinese people spend little time reading. Some of them read just to kill time or prepare for the tests rather than enjoy the reading itself.

As far as I am concerned , Chinese people don’t read as much as they used to for the following reasons. For one thing, people have too much going on in their mind as China is now experiencing great changes, so it has become difficult for them to enjoy reading quietly; for another, with heavy work load, people in China only read when they need something for practical use or something relaxing to keep them away from working pressure.

Personally, reading is of great significance in life. It not only provides a source of satisfaction and pleasure, but also serves as a means to seek information and to acquire, develop and apply knowledge. Besides, people can read to enhance language proficiency and to broaden life experience as well.

I myself have improved English a lot through reading. At the beginning, I thought it difficult to read English novels but gradually, my language proficiency was enhanced before I realized it. Personally, it will make a great difference by reading.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important, of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household's waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it is also applied to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary materials are collected. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

1.What does the underlined phrase "over-consumption" refer to?

A. Using too much packaging.

B. Recycling too many wastes.

C. Having more material than is needed.

D. Making more products than necessary.

2.The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show_______.

A. the tendency of cutting household waste

B. the increase of packaging recycling

C. the fact of packaging overuse

D. the rapid growth of supermarkets

3.According to the text, recycling_________.

A. means burning packaging for energy

B. helps control the greenhouse effect

C. is the solution to gas shortage

D. leads to a waste of land

4.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.

C. Other products are better packaged than food.

D. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

5.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Needless material is mostly recycled.

B. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

C. People like collecting recyclable wastes.

D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

科目:高中英语 来源:2015届广东省汕头市高二下期末英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

“I’ve never met a human worth cloning,” says cloning expert Mark Westhusin from his lab at Texas A&M University. “It’s a stupid endeavor.”

That’s an interesting choice of adjective, coming from a man who has spent millions of dollars trying to clone a 13-year-old dog named Missy. So far, he and his team have not succeeded, though they have cloned two cows and a cat.

They just might succeed in cloning Missy soon — or perhaps not for another five years.

Westhusin's experience with cloning animals leaves him upset by all this talk of human cloning. In three years of work on the Missy project, using hundreds upon hundreds of dog's eggs, the A&M team has produced only a dozen or so embryos carrying Missy's DNA. None have survived the transfer to a surrogate(代孕的)mother. The wastage of eggs and the many spontaneously aborted(流产,发育不全) fetuses(胎)may be acceptable when you're dealing with cats or bulls, he argues, but not with humans. “Cloning is incredibly inefficient, and also dangerous,” he says.

Even so, dog cloning is a commercial opportunity, with a nice research payoff. Ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1996, Westhusin's phone has been ringing with people calling in hopes of duplicating their cats and dogs, cattle and horses. “A lot of people want to clone pets, especially if the price is right,” says Westhusin. Cost is no obstacle for Missy's mysterious billionaire owner; he's put up $3.7 million so far to fund A&M's research.

Contrary to some media reports, Missy is not dead. The owner wants a twin to carry on Missy's fine qualities after she does die. The prototype(原型;雏形)is, by all accounts, athletic, good-natured and super-smart. Missy's master does not expect an exact copy of her. He knows her clone may not have her temperament(气质、性情). In a statement of purpose, Missy's owner and the A&M team say they are “both looking forward to studying the ways that her clones differ from Missy.”

Besides cloning a great dog, the project may contribute insight into the old question of nature vs. nurture. It could also lead to the cloning of special rescue dogs and many endangered animals.

However, Westhusin is cautious about his work. He knows that even if he gets a dog pregnant, the offspring, should they survive, will face the problems shown at birth by other cloned animals: abnormalities like immature lungs and heart and weight problems~ “Why would you ever want to clone humans,” Westhusin asks, “when we're not even close to getting it worked out in animals yet?”

1.By “stupid endeavor”, Westhusin means to say that ________.

A. human cloning is a foolish undertaking

B. animal cloning is absolutely impractical

C. human cloning should be done selectively

D. animal cloning is not worth the effort at all

2.What does the second paragraph tell us about Westhusin's dog cloning project?

A. Its success is already in sight.

B. It is progressing smoothly.

C. It is doomed to utter failure.

D. Its outcome remains uncertain.

3.By cloning Missy, Mark Westhusin hopes to ________.

A. study the possibility of cloning humans

B. search for ways to modify its temperament

C. find out the differences between Missy and its clones

D. examine the reproductive system of the dog species

4.We learn from the passage that animal clones are likely to have ________.

A. a bad temper

B. defective(有缺陷的、有毛病的)organs

C. immune deficiency

D. an abnormal shape

5.What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Cloning of Missy

B. Scientist Says ‘No’ to Human Cloning

C. Human Cloning Is Dangerous .

D. Westhusin Is Cautious about Cloning

Today, Tony and I went to the countryside by the bus for the Strawberry-picking Festival. It starts at 8:00 in the morning. After the organizer introduced the rules of the festival, we led into the strawberry garden by some girls. While walking along the road, we saw beautiful flowers and heard birds sang. The air was much clean than that in the city when we live. During the festival, we enjoyed sweet strawberries or watched some exciting performances. At about 5:00pm, we had to say goodbye for the garden. Tony and I enjoyed us and hoped to visit there again. How an unforgettable experience!
