Unless除非;although尽管,虽然;since既然,自从;but但是。
dream about梦想;be worried  about担忧;ask about询问;shout大喊,不与abut连用。
insist on坚持要求;rely on依赖;argue about争论;wonder about困惑不解。
【小题11】over在……
As“当……
lead to通向,导致;get to到达;introduce to介绍;move to移向。
【小题18】turned around转过身来;cheered up加油;settled down 安顿下来;dropped in顺便拜访。

Dear Boris,

     ___1____

After I had spent a week with my English family, I slowly began to understand their English a little better. ___2____ Students in my group are from different cities of Britain and their dialects (方言) are different too! Some of their accents are quite strong and they also have their own words and expressions.

__3____ Before I came to England I had thought that fish and chips were eaten every day. That’s quite wrong! I get rather annoyed now when I hear all the foolish words about typical English food.

I had expected to see “London fog”. Do you remember our texts about it? We had no idea that most of this “thick fog” disappeared many years ago when people stopped using coal in their homes. But the idea to speak about weather was very helpful. ___4____ On the other hand, habits are different. People tell me what is typical British here in London is not always typical in Wales or Scotland. ___5____

But what is ordinary for all British is that they follow traditions(传统). Probably Britain has more living signs of its past than many other countries. And people have always been proud of having ancient (古老) buildings in capitals, big cities and the countryside.

I will tell you more about Britain in my other letters.

Two brightly colored butterflies have just flown by. They seems to be exactly alike, but actually one is a little larger than the other.   1  The smaller one has a wingspread of less than three inches and also a black line on its back wings.
At first sight, it is hard to tell them apart. Would you guess from this that they are different-sized butterflies of the same species?  2  If you said yes to either question, you would be wrong, for these look-alikes belong to quite different families.
The larger insect is the monarch butterfly As a baby insect, the monarch feeds on milkweed, which seems to give the monarch a disagreeable taste and smell.   3  Birds that eat butterflies soon recognize the monarch and quickly learn to leave it alone.
4  Birds would find this insect tasty, but because it looks like the monarch, birds keep away from it. The viceroy’s similarity to the monarch gives it some protection from its enemies and helps it survive.
There are other pairs of look-alike butterflies, bees and moths. In each case, one either has a disagreeable taste or smell, or can give a painful sting (叮咬). The larger is called the model.  5

A.The smaller insect is the viceroy (副王峡蝶), which feeds on the leaves of trees.
B.The larger insect has a wingspread (翼长) of up to four inches.
C.The bright coloring of the monarch acts as a warning sign to its enemy.
D.Birds protect their babies from eating such dangerous enemies.
E. The insect that imitates this model for protection is called the mimic(保护色).
F. Or that they are different species of butterflies but close relatives belonging to the same family?
G. Do you like this kind of special species?

It’s not news that we spend more time than ever texting and online.1 Yes, that’s right: a 2010 study shows that more teens are reading good old-fashioned, ink-on-paper books.
Reading is a good way to discover the next big thing and to learn a little more about yourself while you’re at it.2 Here are some tips.
Start with your interests
Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school. You can pick something that’s all about your interests, whether it’s ancient martial arts, computers, or fashion design.
Reading the blurbs(简介)
The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are called “blurbs”. 3if you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the quotes(if there are any) and see which authors praised the book. Often, they’ll have similar styles and you might find you like books by those authors too.
Ask an expert
4 Explain your interests--- rock stars, sports teams, historical events, humors, whatever you’re into—and any writers you like, and your librarian can point you toward books that you’ll love.
Finally, you’ll probably enjoy what you’re reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book.5 You can put on some good music(ideally without lyrics), get yourself some tea and a comfy spot, and let yourself be carried away by the book.
You’ll see that time does fly when you are reading something you love!

A.Join a group with your friends and people you trust.
B.But do you know how to pick a book you’ll really like?
C.But did you know that we also spend more time reading?
D.Your local library can hook you up with a whole lot of great book ideas.
E. What was your mother’s favorite book when she was your age or your dad’s?
F. We all multitask, but most reading is best enjoyed when you can concentrate and focus on it.
G. They give you an idea of what the book is about, and can also help you pick future books too.

Over the years, Americans have become used to salt. Most people have no idea how much salt they consume-on average, about 9 to 12 gram per person per day, according to the American Heart Association. That's twice the amount recommended by the government.
A new study last week showed eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The scientists said the results would be thirteen percent fewer heart attacks, eight percent fewer strokes(中风), four percent fewer deaths and eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease.
Researchers also found that the benefits would be greatest for African Americans and women. As a group, African Americans tend to have higher blood pressure than the general population, and "many studies suggest that they may be more sensitive to salt," says Dr.Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, an epidemiologist(流行病学家)at the University of California, San Francisco. Her analysis found that a reduction of 3 gram of salt per day would reduce heart attacks 8% on average; among African Americans, that rate would drop 10%.A similar result was found in women, whose stroke risk dropped 8% with a 3-g reduction in salt intake; in men, the risk fell 5%.
They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt.
However, other scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people.
Michael Alderman, a high blood pressure expert and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. But he says studies have not clearly shown that lowering salt means fewer heart attacks or strokes.
“Salt has other biological effects. Calling for reductions in the national diet could have good effects, as well as harmful results. There is not enough evidence either way,”said Michael Alderman.
