Two years before,I travelled to Brazil and I rented for a car. Unfortunate,I had an accident and hit another car,and I needed to stay in a hospital for at least two week. I called my parents,so I did not tell them what had happened. I knew that they will be worried about myself because I was so farther away, and that my mother

would not sleep if she knew. Therefore,I told them interested stories and how I was enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was the right thing to do.

Public Speaking and Critical Thinking What is critical thinking? To a certain degree,if s  a matter of logic (逻辑) 一of being able to spot weaknesses in other peopled arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.

In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organised thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 71 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too,is critical thinking.

72 As the class goes on,for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organising your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (

械的) exercise,it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused,

chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If,on the other hand, the structure is clear, there

is a good chance your thinking is too. Organising a

speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 73

What is true of organisation is true of many aspects of public speaking. 74 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 75 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.

If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

   A. Rather,it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

   B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

   C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.

   D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganised ideas.

   E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.

   F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.

   G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can beused in other forms of communication as well.

As of 2020,space tourism will become a reality. You can book flights with 330 other people who want to fly into space. At this time, the cost is $ 200,000 per flight, but it is expected that the cost will soon come down. It is estimated that by 2025 about 15,000 people will fly into space every year.

No doubt these advances will lead to new extreme sports for brave people to try. By 2025 a famous actress that wants to give her career a boost might try to ride a surfboard (冲浪板) in space, through the atmosphere, and then sail past a beach in California before landing on the nearby ocean, and then surf back to the beach. The surfboard will be extra large, and it can control weather.

At the start of the flight, she will have to wear a space outfit and be strapped onto the surfboard which will act as protection. But as it gets lower in height and it becomes warmer, she can start taking off her clothes. The world's media will watch and report on every move as she throws each piece away, and watch as the pieces quickly bum up. As she gets lower and glides the surfboard over to the beach near     Los Angeles, she will get rid of the rest. So she will be wearing a bikini as she glides in and lands on the ocean and then goes on to surf to the beach.

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?

Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can't hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 player, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.

Take Them Off!You need to know when to turn off your MP3 and put it away. Libraries and schools don't allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don't have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes,it doesn’t make sense to listen to your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play,a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.

Take One Out!Once in a while it's okay just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening to your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way,and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it's not for you.

It's Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

Poverty, disease and conflict have historically threatened food security. Now,rising food prices and issues like climate change add to these threats.
