How to control embarrassing moments

Have you ever done something embarrassing? At that moment, you probably wished you could disappear into air. Good news? You can keep the damage to the minimum. Here’s some help.

1.

You are staring at a handsome boy so hard that you walk into a wall. You dropped all your books. The best thing you can do? If you’re not hurt seriously, laugh it off. Say like “Hey, I can teach you to do that if you want to!” By laughing at yourself, you show people you’re confident and still in control of the situation.

2.

Some situations are not suitable for laughing off. Your underwear falls out of your backpack. You pass gas while giving a speech. Making a joke would call more attention to what happened. What now? You can just pretend nothing happened and go on what you were doing, or you can say “Oh, that was awkward” and then move on.

3.

Some embarrassing situations may embarrass yourself and make someone else feel bad. You imitate (模仿) your teacher’s accent just as the teacher walks in. Making a joke or running away won’t make you look better. Instead, apologize, “I’m so sorry about that.” It may make things right again.

A. Apologize

B. Move on

C. Laugh it off

D. Run away

Be smart about advertisements!

People cannot get away from advertisements which promise cheap goods and free gifts. Last week, I read an advertisement for a sale. Seeing the attractive prices for the goods, I couldn’t help driving to the supermarket. As the advertisement said, most of the things there were much cheaper than usual. In no time, I filled two baskets with ten bars of soap, two very nice-looking kitchen knives and so on. When my husband got home and saw all the things I bought, he asked me to think about what I needed all these things for. There was already enough soap at home, and there were already two knives in the kitchen drawer. I think I should be smart about advertisements in future and not be tricked by them.

Bamboo is one of the nature’s most surprising plants. Many people call this plant a tree, but it is a kind of grass.

Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe. There are more than 1,000 kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains(平原).

Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30 centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.

Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables(绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000 years, and is still holding strong.

In Africa, engineers are teaching poor farmers how to find water using bamboo. These African countries need cheap ways to find water because they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use. Bamboo pipes and drills(钻) can help to make the poor thirsty fields to be watered.

B. It grows everywhere.

A. Because it is cheap.

B. Because it is colorful.

C. Because it drills fast.

D. Because it is used by Asians.

4.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. There are many different kinds of bamboo with different colors.

B. Cables made of bamboo can last for over a thousand years.

C. Bamboo can be used for buildings, bridges and watering projects.

Organic(有机的) farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural products. Use of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized(具有…的特征) by the use of green manure(肥料), biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productive. Limiting the use of man?made chemicals or completely doing away with(去掉) them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. 3.Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.

4.The use of green pesticides (杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human’s health.

Disadvantages of Organic Farming:

1. Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.

I grew up in Malaysia. Since we did not have many toys, we used rubber bands (橡皮筋) to make a jump rope. Three years ago, when my daughters Michelle and Theresa were 9 and 12 years old, they were making bracelets (手环) using rubber bands. It struck me that I knew how to do that. I like to impress my daughters and show them that their dad is cool, so I tried it too. To my surprise, I couldn’t work with the bands because my fingers were too big.

Since I studied engineering, I decided to come up with a solution (解决办法). I ran down to my basement and found a piece of wooden board, some pushpins and hooks (图钉和钩子). With the help of these things, I managed to make a bracelet. One of my daughters said, “Wow, that’s cool, but I can make it by hand.” So I started to put two, three, four, five rows together. I crossed the bands into diamond patterns using rainbow colors, which is how the Rainbow Loom (彩虹织机) got its name.

My daughters were so excited that they showed the bracelets to their friends. We started to get requests for them. But they were still difficult to make. I thought, “If I can make a small, easy-to-use loom, I’m onto something big.” It took six months and a lot of support from my kids to perfect the idea.

I tried to sell the loom by making videos about how to use it and taking my daughters to stores to show it. Many store owners thought it might be too difficult to use. For a year, we sold it only on our website. When it became popular with kids, it got noticed by toy stores.

It is so exciting that a simple idea my kids and I came up with together at our living-room table has become a nationwide fad.

1.The author tried to show his daughters how to make bracelets but _____.

A. was refused B. regretted

C. failed D. was misunderstood

2.The author made up his mind to find a method of _____.

A. making bracelets

B. using a jump rope

C. impressing his daughters

D. inventing the Rainbow Loom

3.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refers to _____.

A. looms B. bracelets

C. friends D. rainbows

4.What did store owners think of the author’s invention at first?

A. They thought highly of it.

B. They had a long wait for it.

C. They showed a great interest in it.

D. They thought there was no market for it.
