The time may soon come when we say goodbye to most of the world’s languages. Today humans express themselves in over 6,000 different languages. But that is quickly changing. Many scientists say that over half of these languages will disappear within the next 50 years. After 100 years, the languages used in the world will not be more than 20.

Why? It is because people from different cultures live and work together much more often than before. This brings changes. The languages of the world’s main culture are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures. Most international trade takes place in world languages such as English. People respect their own cultures and traditions, but when it comes to getting a job, knowing a world language is often necessary. It may mean the difference between success and failure.

Technology works on the change of languages in an even more amazing way. Modern media such as radio and television give young people in developing countries much knowledge about the world. But this knowledge doesn’t come in words from the mouths of their parents or the elders in their neighborhood. It usually comes in the language of a different culture.

People in different cultures think it good for them to share a popular language. They can quickly share ideas and work together. Knowing the same language means easier communication and is a basis for trust.

Is the death of a small local language such a terrible thing? The answer is maybe. Many cultures may have words for many useful things we know nothing about. If their languages die, their valuable wisdom may be lost forever. The future of the world’s language depends on our actions now. Will we protect endangered languages or allow them to quietly disappear?

Time will have the last word.

1.Scientists say that within 50 years, perhaps, there will be only _______languages in the world.

A. around 3,000 B. over 3,000

C. 6,000 D. less than 20

2. In “the languages of the world’s main cultures are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures.” the underlined word “replace” means “_______”.

A. to put something back into a correct place

B. to find good place for something

C. to take the place of something.

D. to decide how important something is

3.The passage says that if all the people in the world knew a popular world language, _______.

A. it would be easier for them to share their ideas

B. people would have no trouble in learning language

C. lessons at schools would be taught in the language

D. people would respect their own culture more

4.According to the passage, if nobody spoke the languages of smaller cultures, _______.

A. many of the words for things we do not know would be lost

B. knowledge would come from the mouths of the elders

C. people would have difficulty in working together

D. there would be no smaller cultures

Have you wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Birds, especially seagulls are very fond of locusts (蝗虫), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect them. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible(can’t be seen) to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the bark(树皮)of trees.

An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is over, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.

1. This passage mainly talks about _______.

A. the change of colour in locusts

B. animals or pests can dye(染色)themselves different colours

C. how a certain sea fish protects itself

D. the protective colour of animals and pests

2. Locusts are pests but they aren’t easily wiped out by their enemies because _______.

A. they change colors with the crops

B. they are dangerous to their enemies

C. they fly very fast

D. they are powerful enough

3.The pests that have different colours from plants usually appear at night because _______.

A. their enemies can easily find them and eat them

B. they have the habit of coming out in darkness

C. it’s easy for them to destroy plants in darkness

D. birds take their rests when night comes

4.A certain fish living in seas has lived through millions of year because _______.

A. it is the most powerful in the sea

B. no other fishes can swim as fast as it can

C. it can send out a kind of liquid which makes its enemies unable to find it

D. the liquid it sends out can kill its enemies

Ten years ago I used to be very fit. I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.

There’s a lot of stress(压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something as I used to. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

1.The writer’s health is becoming worse mainly because ________.

A. he is very fond of his job

B. he likes drinking and smoking

C. he doesn’t care about his health

D. his work makes him feel stressful

2.According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?

A. He got higher pay.

B. His working hours weren’t long.

C. He found it very stressful.

D. He had little free time at weekends.
