“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and I on the other side.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.

But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always put his opinions and codes of behavior on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just

like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived ,I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”

In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous(蛮横的)words: “I can’t throw you away, let alone these old papers?”

All the lights were off except father’s.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After

shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.

This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love—it’s second to none.

It’s not easy to find a person with the qualities it takes to be a hero. I didn’t really understand the meaning of the word “hero” until my third year in the college.

If you saw her, you wouldn’t think she really looks the part, but she is stronger than Superman could ever be. Her name is Sandra Keierleber. I first met her at volleyball tryouts(选拔赛), but didn’t notice anything special at first. As the week passed, however, she showed she had more heart than anyone. She stood out because she never gave up, no matter what.

Sandra isn’t the tallest or the fastest --- in fact, this was her first time playing volleyball and it showed--- but that didn’t stop her. She was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. By the end of tryouts she had found a place in everyone’s heart. When the name list for new members was put up, we all waited nervously as she checked. When she stood at the door and smiled happily, all we could do was cheer.

After Sandra made the team, she worked even harder to improve her game. When she asked for help, we gladly taught her. She also became our fan, attending almost every school game and even joining us in the city games. We all like her, because she never thinks about doing things the easy way, or loses that smile. Because of her great efforts, she makes herself a true hero--- and my hero, too.

Known as the "crazy nest lady", Katie Deline-Ray isn't quite sure how many mini handmade harbors she's knitted for injured baby animals. But she's certain it's a lot.

Deline-Ray is founder of Wildlife Rescue Nests. She designs and makes strong, soft nests, which she donates to wildlife rescue groups to use as little recovery nests for sick and injured animals. She also shares her patterns for others to copy.

Deline-Ray began making her nests in 2013, while she was recovering from a broken hand, and "spending too much time online."One thing led to another -- as happens on the internet -- and she discovered a woman who was making similar nests for U.S.-based wildlife groups, as an alternative to the hard boxes used to contain the animals these groups care for.

"I thought it was such a wonderful idea and went searching to see whether there was anything like it set up for our wildlife rescues in Canada," she says. "To my surprise there wasn’t. So I started contacting wildlife rescues and they agreed to try some out." Some modifications were made to already-existing patterns. And then, like a little bird taking its first flight, the nests went out into the world.

These days, Deline-Ray sends nests -- always for free -- to 60-some wildlife rescue groups, where injured birds and rabbits nestle inside the soft spaces while they are recovering.

Her future plans include making more nests, organizing new volunteer knitters and helping as many wildlife rescuers as possible take care of their animals in this charming way.

“I have no formal training with wildlife, just a great love for it.” Deline-Ray says. “I love making the nests because I have a great admiration for all the amazing work the wildlife rescues do. I feel like I have a part in giving back to wildlife in a small way.”

1.According to the passage, we can know Katie Deline-Ray ____.

A. admires what the wildlife rescues do

B. has designed the first nest pattern in the world

C. knits nests which are only intended for injured baby birds

D. keeps a record of the nests she has made over the years

2.What can we infer from the passage?

B. Katie Deline-Ray set up Wildlife Rescue Nests based in Canada.

C. Deline-Ray was once encouraged by an American woman.

D. The nests Deline-Ray made were sold all over the world.

3.What do you think of Katie Deline-Ray?

A. Modest. B. Caring. C. Cautious. D. Honest.

4.What can be the best title?

A. Useful Man-Made Nests.

B. A Wildlife Protection Program.

New data from NASA's Curiosity rover indicate Mars Crater once held an enormous lake. This discovery suggests that the red planet may have been much wetter than scientists thought and raises the possibility that the planet was once habitable.

“The size of the lake and the length of time and series that water was showing up implies that there may have been sufficient time for life to develop.” NASA's Mars Exploration Program scientist Dr. Michael Meyer told Reuters.

Curiosity collected the new data on its five-mile drive to Mount Sharp, the prime destination on its mission to study Mars' climate and geography. The rover landed in Gale Crater in August 2012.

After reaching Mount Sharp in September, the rover spent two months studying rocks at the base of the three-mile-high mountain, discovering fine layers of mudstone--which tend to collect at the bottom of lakes. This shows how a mountain inside a Mars' Gale Crater might have formed.

“If our assumption for Mount Sharp holds up, it challenges the idea that warm and wet conditions were passing, local, or only underground on Mars,” Dr. Ashwin Vasavada said in a written statement. “A more radical explanation is that Mars' ancient, thicker atmosphere raised temperatures above freezing globally, but so far we don't know how the atmosphere did that.”

Vasavada said Curiosity will continue to study changes in the rock formation as it climbs Mount Sharp in the next few months, which should test the team's hypothesis.

“We'll also look at the chemistry of the rocks to see if the water that was once present would've been of the kind that could support microbial life, if it ever was present,” he said in a video released by NASA. “With only 30 vertical feet of the mountain behind us, we're sure there's a lot more to discover.”

1.What does this text mainly talk about?

A. How scientists explored Mars.

B. The ways Curiosity used to explore Mount Sharp.

C. Some data about Gale Crater.

D. The discovery of Curiosity rover on Mars.

2.The discovery of the lake proves that _____.

A. early Mars was ripe and ready for life

B. the climate on early Mars was hot

C. life once existed on Mars

D. humans can live on Mars

3. What is the height of Mount Sharp?

A. 5 miles B. 30 miles C. 3 miles D. 22miles

4.Where does this text probably come from?

A. A science fiction. B. A science report.

C. An environment report. D. An official announcement.
