April 16,2007—A Bloody Day

Brave professor takes the bullets(子弹)meant for his class

Liviu Librescu, 76, a senior researcher and lecturer in engineering, was a Holocaust(大屠杀)survivor who immigrated to Israel from Romania in 1978. Librescu was an expert in mechanics, teaching at Tel Aviv University and the Haifa Tchnion before moving to the United States in 1984.

According to eyewitness accounts, Librescu and the class heard shooting in a nearby room. The students said their professor blocked the doorway with his body to stop the gunman from entering. Some students took cover underneath desks while others jumped out of windows.

Librescu’s son Joe said to the news reporter:“I understand from friends that my father was a hero.”

“It wouldn’t amaze me he would do such a thing,” fellow engineering professor Muhammad said “He is that kind of person, willing to take care of others and protect others.”

Depressed young man shoots 32 people to death before killing himself

A student from South Korea was identified on Tuesday as the gunman who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech University in the deadliest shooting in modern US history.

The shooter, 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, who immigrated to the United States 15 years ago and was raised near Washington, killed himself after opening fire in four classrooms.

Cho was described as a depressed  and deeply disturbed young man whose “grotesque”(怪诞)creative play writings even led a professor to advise him to see a psychological doctor.

The police had found a scrawl(涂鸦)in Cho’s dorm room. “It’s sort of a writing attacking the rich, spoiled students.” “A second note was found near Cho’s body, also containing the same kind of thing.” It could not immediately be determined when the notes were written.

Fellow students in a playwriting class with Cho also noticed the dark and disturbing nature of his compositions. “His writing, the plays, were full of hatred and seemed very angry,” Stephanie Derry, a senior English major said, “I remember one of them very well. It was about a son who hammered his stepfather to death.” Derry said.

“He wasn’t an outgoing kind of person. He was very quiet and always kept to himself,” Cho’s neighbor Shash recalled, “He spent a lot of his free time playing basketball and would not respond if someone greeted  him.”

Rod Wells, a postal worker, said that characterization of Cho did not fit his parents, who worked at a dry cleaner’s. He described them as “always polite, always kind to me, very quiet, always smiling. Just sweet people.”

Latrice Brown was excited about starting her junior year. She had volunteered to take part in the Lincoln High School Friendship Program. As an upperclassman, she would be assigned a “freshman(新生) friend.” Her duties would include helping her friend get used to high school life by offering friendship. Latrice thought it was important to have someone with whom to talk and share concerns. She knew that the friendship program was likely to make the freshman year of high school a positive experience. On July 24 Latrice received a notice in the mail about the schedule of events for the freshman orientation(适应指导)

Freshman Orientation

Please call your freshman friend and introduce yourself over the telephone. Confirm that he or she will be attending the orientation

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR ORIENTATION

Wednesday, August 13-9:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.

Upperclassmen and freshmen will gather for a gathering in the hall. Student Council president Sarah Wilke will give a speech titled “What It Means to Be in High School”.

Mr. Reick, the principal, will welcome everyone to Lincoln High School and formally introduce each upperclassman to his or her freshman friend. After being introduced, please go to the café. At this time pick up your friend’s class schedule and locker number at the guidance counselors’(顾问) table.

10:30 A.M to 11:30 A.M.

Start your school tour at your friend’s locker to ensure it works. If there is a problem, report it to Mr. Mulholland, the assistant principal. Then walk to the classrooms on the class schedule in the order in which they are listed. This will help familiarize your freshman friend with the schedule and the layout(布局) of the school. Discuss high school life but try not to supply your freshman friends with too much information. High school is confusing and frightening when you’re just starting and everything is new.

11:30 A.M to 1:00 P.M.

Return to the café to enjoy pizza and to take part in a question-and-answer meeting.

Monday, August 18 (First Day of School)-All Lunch Periods

The Hidden Health Issue: Emotional Well-Being

The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health has just released the results from the second annual Bay Annual Parent Poll, a telephone survey of nearly 1,800 parents from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco. San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties in California.

For the second year in a row. Bay Area parents have put their children’s emotional health at the top of their worry list, highlighting a health risk not usually discussed. Parents across economic, ethnic, and geographic lines say that they worry about stress, depression, weight, and the impact of family stress on their kids.

Stress and Depression

About 65% of the parents of teenagers say their children experience stress from schoolwork, pressure to compete in school, divorce and family finances. In addition, 25% of the parents worry that their children might be depressed. Comparatively, less than 10% of the parents of the teens are concerned about their children smoking cigarettes, using alcohol or smoking marijuana.

Other Results

Family Time: More than 25% of the parents say they do not spend enough time together as a family.

Media: More than 45% of the parents way that the media have a negative effect on their teens.

It is clear from the results of this survey that parents of older teens are more worried about their emotional health, and I would guess that part of this finding reflects parents not feeling “connected” to their teens. We know that stress and depression are predictors for teens participating in many unhealthy behaviors, including drinking and smoking.

Not only do these results call for schools and health care to regularly assess the emotional well-being of teens, it is also a wake-up call for parents to “engage” with both the health care and educational systems to support changes to reduce the stress our youth are feeling.

1.What is the greatest stress for the Bay Area Children in the parents’ opinions?

      A.Activities like sports, music, arts.

       B.Difficulties with family members.

       C.Pressure to compete in school.

       D.Homework and schoolwork.

2.According to the survey, parents worry most about their kids’            .

       A.unhealthy behaviors                             B.emotional health

       C.physical health                                     D.school lessons

3.How many parents think that the media have a bad effect on their teens?

       A.One out of ten.                                    B.Over a quarter.

       C.Nearly a half.                                      D.About two thirds.

4.We can conclude from the results of the survey that           .

A.children’s health risk should be highlighted

B.parents should help to reduce children’s stress

C.educational systems should be completely changed

D.parents should prevent their children from bad behaviors

Dior was born in Normandy in 1905, and his family’s original plans for him included a career in the diplomatic service, but by the time he was twenty-three, with his parents’ money, he opened a small art gallery in Paris. In February, 1947, Dior started the New Look in his first major Paris collection. He was backed by a famous textile producer. Boussac, who looked after the dollars, while Dior looked after the fashions. Dior knew nothing about cutting and sewing, but he was good at fashion design.

The New look started an entirely different look to costume, with a tiny waist, a rounded shoulder and a shapely bust(胸围), usually with a low-cut neekline and a long, full skirt. To women who had lived through the war years, the femaleness of the New Look was a great success, for people were tired of the extremely plain, wartime restrictive fashions.

It is said that dresses by Dior were “constructed like buildings,” but young people were attracted to his design, and all over the western world, manufacturers plunged(投入)into the production of his new style. Dior’s revolutionary designs lighted up a whole cycle of fashion, rounded, gentle, feminine, a delight in elegance. A New Look House of Dior opened in 1948, followed by one in London. Considered as King of Couture(Women’s clothing) for years, the Dior empire grew until it covered every country in the western world, and included furs, hosiery, jewelry, perfumes, men’s wear and on and on. More than 1,000 people worked at the Paris headquarters then.

His sudden death in 1957 when he was 54 years old did not stop the growth of the House of Dior.
