Good health is the most valuable possession a person can have, but one can't take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat the right foods, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.

Proper nutrition is important for good health. Your body cannot function well unless it receives the proper kind of "fuel". Avoid foods with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein, like lean meat, fish, beans and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are especially important because they provide necessary Vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It is not healthful to be overweight.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, you will feel tired and irritable(易怒的). You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.

Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your lifespan(寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shape, basketball, swimming, bicycling, gymnastics and running are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.

If everybody were to eat the right foods and get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

With the advent(出现) of fast food chains from the West such as McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, the Chinese are being introduced to a diet that markedly(明显地) increases the death rate from certain diseases in any population.

The main killers in North America, the degenerative diseases(变性疾病)such as heart attack and stroke as well as colon(结肠) cancer, will become a way of death in this country if the Chinese do not act quickly and compete with these health destroying food chains.

Scientific studies from all over the world show that a diet high in animal foods such as pork, beef, including sugar, white flour, white noodles and even white rice, undermines(破坏) one's health. Deposits of animal fat cling to the walls of arteries(动脉), blocking the blood supply to various organs.

This causes diseases in almost every organ, but in particular it damages two of the most vital ones, the heart and the brain.

Compare these problems with the excellent health one may enjoy if one consumes good Chinese food. The cook goes out every day, procures great-tasting, fresh vegetables, then cooks them for just a few minutes so that their nutritional value is preserved and afterwards serves them in a most artistic and elegant fashion. Please cling to your traditional ways of eating. They are far superior to those of the West.

One reason Western fast food restaurants make money is that the food they serve, which comes from assembly lines(装配线), will not attract bugs(病菌)or spoil easily.

Western restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated. Moreover, these restaurants also do indeed have "good service and an inviting dining atmosphere". However, Chinese food chains could do likewise(同样地)if they would organize themselves as the Western chains do.

These lessons in management and decoration are the only ones worth learning from the Western fast food chains. In other words only imitate the style of the restau-

rants, not the content of the food or the menus in any way, shape or form.

Do not let the desire for money destroy the wonderful tradition that China has established in producing absolutely fantastically tasty as well as healthful food.

A. McDonald's

C. Pizza Hut

A. the heart and the brain

C. all organs

D. the blood

3. The reasons Western fast food restaurants make money are ________ .

A. assembly lines that will not attract bugs or spoil easily

C. good service and an inviting dining atmosphere

D. All of the above

4. What will be worth learning from the Western fast food chains?

It's lunchtime, you're hungry and can't wait to get your favourite meal at the restaurant. But there is a queue of people nearly reaching the door. Don't worry - in cyberworld (网络世界), lunch is just a few clicks away.

"Shopping has never been easier. With just a single click on your mouse (鼠标), whatever you order online can be

delivered to your door in no time at all," said Bian Jing, 20, who recently took part in an online survival contest held in Beijing. Each competitor had to go online and buy enough food and drink to last them for 100 hours, using limited money.

"I don't want to spend too much time shopping so I do it online rather than in a normal store," said Chang Haijiao, a Senior 3 student at the Second High School Attached to Capital Normal University. "It's easy to find the thing you want on websites as they have catalogues (目录)."

Customers who go online can also find lower prices and a wider choice of goods.

But many teachers and parents are worried that online shopping is becoming too popular.

"It's not a good way for high school students to spend their money," said a teacher at Chang's school. "I don't like them to shop online."

As students are still dependent upon their parents for money, it is said that they are not ready to take responsibility for paying for goods online. There is also the risk they will lose their money at online stores that just want to cheat customers.

Most parents, though, don't want to pay the bill when their children overspend on the Internet. "I hate having to pay

unexpected bills," said one father. "But my son always surprises me with them."

There is a big experiment going on. How big? Well, the laboratory is the Pacific Ocean, and the experiment may go on for twenty years.

Such a huge experiment is needed to answer a hugely important question: How fast is the earth warming up? We know that the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide are making our atmosphere into a warmer blanket. And we worry that this "greenhouse effect" may get greater and greater. But we aren't sure how much the earth is warming up or how much it has warmed up over the past hundred years.

Of course, we have lots of careful temperature records. You see or hear these every day in the weather reports of your radio and TV stations. You also can see how much these changes from hour to hour, from day to day, and from one place to another. But you have never heard anyone say what the average temperature was for the whole world.

Scientists have worked hard to figure out average air temperatures in order to see how much these have changed. One of our best estimates(估算) is that the earth has warmed up about 1°F in the past hundred years. That may not sound like much, but on a worldwide basis even small changes in temperature have big effects.

61. Why is the experiment regarded as big? It is because ________ .

One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than allowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology(精神药理学) has proven what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything. Researchers found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a reduction of hormone(荷尔蒙) and shuts down the immune system. This leads to illness and depression(压抑). Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by literally forcing yourself to be positive, it will spread and will strengthen the positive thoughts.

For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you don't feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can generate(产生)thoughts, but thoughts can also generate feelings. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our life. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career objectives than your own attitude.

You cannot control external(客观的)events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and so have a positive attitude and be happy. This vital key to success is totally within your control. Use it.

68. If you aren't a fool, you should ________ .

A. overlook the importance of using positive thinking

B. put importance on positive thinking

C. allow the use of negative thinking

D. have positive thinking as well as negative thinking

69. Which statement is NOT true?

A. Negative thinking will make you ill and depressed.

B. If you don't want to smile or laugh, you'd better force yourself to.

C. Feelings have something to do with thoughts.

D. Having a positive attitude, one can control all external events.

Dorothy Basils Thompson, 46, stepped in a conference room in her Hollywood's Raleith Studio. "People expect you not to succeed," the former TV commercial producer said to eight men in their twenties. "But I'm going to teach you how to be great! By the time I finish, you're going to be better trained than any of those film school kids."

Thompson felt that the nation's most attractive industry was doing little to help young adults in the inner city, so she founded the Streetlights Production Assistant Programme in May 1992. Under its nonprofit(无利润) banner(旗帜), she puts disadvantaged pupils through 240 hours of training to prepare them for entry-level jobs in the entertainment industry. Some of her graduates had been poor youths, high school dropouts, and even gang members.

But getting her movie-business friends to hire her trainees turned out to be a discouraging task. A few managers said that they didn't believe people could change all that much. Thompson, however, was determined. She threw all her time and savings into getting Streetlights started.

Her perseverance(毅力) paid off. By the programme's fifth year, Thompson had placed 82 well-trained graduates on films such as Dangerous Minds, the Nutty Professor and Liar, and on TV shows and commercials.

"My life has greatly changed because of Dorothy," says Streetlights graduate Robber Leon, a former gang member once known as Crazy Ace. Leon has just finished working on a new film. "Because of Dorothy, I've got a future."

If women are exploited (剥削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they shake at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman can stand in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashions is nothing more than the creation of waste on purpose. Many women spend too much money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can declare that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are seldom concerned with important things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her away through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, show basic qualities of inconstancy and instability (不稳定性)? Men are clever enough not to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress show basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

61. Designers and big stores always make money ________ .

A. by exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

B. because they are able to know new fashions before hand

C. by frequently changing the fashions in women's clothing

D. because they pay much attention to the quality of women's clothing

62. The writer would be less critical if fashion designers paid more attention to the ________ of clothing.

A. coat B. appearance C. comfort D. colors

63. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Fashion designs shouldn't be encouraged for they're only welcomed by women.

B. The frequent changes in women's clothing show their strength of character.

C. The fashion industry makes an important contribution to society.

D. New fashions in clothing are created for making money from women.
