An Italian philosopher once said that a great man makes his own good luck. What he means is that when good luck comes, a great man knows how to seize the opportunity and  36   advantage of it.

A friend of mine was sitting in the living room one day when his cat dragged in a little “gift” in its mouth — a dead animal of some sort. “Are you too stupid to do anything right?”These words－said by a woman to a little boy who was obviously her son－ were spoken   36   he had walked away from her. The boy returned, his eyes down-cast.

I recently heard a story from a man named Malcom Dalkoff. For the last 24 years he has been a professional   41   . Here is what he told me:

  As a boy in Rock Island, Dalkoff was terribly   42   . He had few   43   and no self-confidence. One day, his English teacher, Ruth Brach, gave the class an assignment. She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, a beautiful image of innocence. It was 36  outside and the kind of rain fell to 37 the earth.

Jame’s New Bicycle

The simplest way to say it is this: I believe in my mother. My  21    began when I was just a kid. I  22   becoming a doctor.

Several years ago, while attending a communication course, I experienced a most unusual process. The instructor asked us to list  36  in our past that we felt  37  of, regretted, or incomplete about and read our lists aloud.

After drinking a few beers, we climbed the tall water tank in the middle of the town, and wrote on the tank in bright red paint: Sheriff Brown is an s.o.b. The next day, almost the whole town saw our glorious  46  . Within two hours, Sheriff Brown had us in his office. My friends told the truth but I lied. No one  47  found out.

Sinking of the Titanic

The great ship, the Titanic, sailed for New York from Southampton on April 10th, 1912．She was  36  1316 passengers and a crew (船员) of 891．At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had ever been built, but was considered to be unsinkable,  37  she had 16 watertight compartments (密封舱)．Even if two of these were flooded, she would still be able to float．The sad sinking of this great ship will always be remembered, for she went down on her first voyage with a  38  loss of life.
