Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.

As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大学预修课)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(学分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.

Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.

If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申请)colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.

Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Stay positive , work hard and remember to have fun!

People with disabilities make up a large part of the population. It is estimated(估计) that over 35 million Americans have physical, mental, or other disabilities. About half of these disabilities are “developmental", i.e., they occur before the individual's twenty-second birthday, often from genetic conditions, and are severe enough to affect three or more areas of development, such as mobility, communication, employment, etc. Most other disabilities are considered “adventitious", i.e., accidental or caused by outside forces.

Prior to the 20th century, only a small percentage of people with disabilities survived for long. Medical treatment for these disabilities was unavailable. Advancements in medicine and social services have created a climate in which people with disabilities can expect to have such basic needs as food, shelter, and medical treatment. Unfortunately, these basics are often not available. Civil liberties such as the right to vote, marry, get an education, and gain employment have historically been denied on the basis of disability.

In recent decades, the disability rights movement has been organized to fight against these infringements(违反, 侵犯)of civil rights. Congress responded by passing major legislation recognizing people with disabilities as a protected class under civil rights statutes.

Still today, people with disabilities must fight to live their lives independently. It is estimated that more than half of qualified Americans with disabilities are unemployed, and a majority of those who do work are underemployed. About two-thirds live at or below the official poverty level.

Significant barriers, especially in transportation and public awareness, prevent disabled people from taking part in society. For example, while no longer prohibited by law from marrying, a person with no access to transportation is effectively excluded from community and social activities which might lead to the development of long-term relationships.

Only when public attitudes advance as far as laws have will disabled people be fully able to take their rightful place in society.

31.A “developmental" disability ______.

A. develops very slowly over time       B. occurs in youth and affects development

C. is caused by forces                 D. is getting more and more severe

32.Most disabled people used to die early because ______.

A. disabilities destroyed major bodily functions

B. medical techniques were not available

C. they were not very well looked after

D. they were too poor to get proper treatment

33.In the author's opinion, to enable the disabled people to take their rightful place in society, ____.

A. more laws should be passed            B. more public facilities should be set up

C. government should provide more aids    D. public attitudes should be changed

34.Which of the following cannot be inferred from the passage?

A. Many disabled people may remain single for their whole life.

B. Discriminatory(带歧视性的)laws prevent the disabled from mixing with others.

C. The public tends to look down upon the disabled people.

D. The disabled people feel inferior to(低于)those surrounding them.

35.The best title for this passage might be ______.

A. Handicaps(障碍)of People with Disabilities

B. The physical difficulties of the Disabled

C. The Causes for Disabilities

D. Medical Treatments for Disabilities

Would you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Clerc. He became a friend of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and together they founded America's first school for the deaf.

Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, on December 26, 1785. When he was one year old, he fell into a fire, losing both his hearing and his sense of smell.

At 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris where he did well in his studies. After he graduated, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher.

Meanwhile, in America, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was studying to be a minister. He was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf. Therefore, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed to London, England to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. While he was there, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf, the school where Laurent Clerc was teaching. Gallaudet accepted the offer. The two worked and studied well together. When the time came for Gallaudet to return, he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted on one condition: that he would stay in America only a short time.

The two men set sail on June 18, 1816. The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean took 52 days; however, Clerc and Gallaudet put the time to good use. Clerc studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language. They discussed the school for the deaf which they planned to open. On the long trip, they had many conversations about education and deafness. The year after they arrived, they founded a school for the deaf in Harford, Connecticut.

At the school, Clerc led a busy life. He taught signs to Principal Gallaudet; he taught the pupils; and he taught hearing men who came to the school to study deaf education.

In 1819, Clerc married Eliza Crocker Boardman, one of his pupils. They had six children. He retired from teaching in 1858. Although he had intended to return to France, he never did. He died on July 18, 1869 in the United States.

1.Why did Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet sail to London?

A. He needed to finish his studies to become a minister.

B. It was the easiest way to get to France.

C. He wanted to study their system of deaf education.

D. He wanted to marry Alice Cogswell.

2.On their trip from Paris to America, Clerc and Gallaudet ___________.

A. played cards and socialized

B. studied and discussed their plans for a deaf school

C. founded a school for the deaf

D. Gallaudet studied English and Clerc studied Sign Language

3.Which is the right order of the things Clerc did?

A. met Gallaudet, moved to America, got married, went to school in Paris.

B. met Gallaudet, went to school in Paris, moved to America, got married.

C. went to school in Paris, met Gallaudet, moved to America, got married.

D. got married, went to school in Paris, met Gallaudet, moved to America.

4.The main idea of this passage could best be stated as_________.

A. Clerc managed his time well, and was able to teach a lot of information in a short period of time

B. Thomas Gallaudet was grateful to Clerc for all that he taught him

C. Clerc preferred teaching deaf students to hearing students

D. Clerc, an educated Frenchman, had a great impact on American Deaf Education
