Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.

Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.

Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported their children’s activities and did not interfere(干涉) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression(沮丧).

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

72. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies?

   A. The environment. B. Mother’s sensitivity.

   C. Their peers(同龄人). D. Education before birth.

73. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?

   A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

   B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

   C. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies.

   D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills.

74. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?

   A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children.

   B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression.

   C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.

   D. Children with high communication abilities.

75. What is the main idea of the passage?

   A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.

   B. Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies’ health.

   C. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old.

   D. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies.

I know what you’re thinking : pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the morning if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it . Some say they don’t have time. Others think they’re “saving” calories(卡路里), still others just don’t like breakfast food .
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking , R , D , who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it. You may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
68. The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means__________.
    A. food remaining after a meal                        B. things left undone
    C. meals made of vegetables                          D. pizza topped with fruit
69. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.
    B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
    C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
    D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.
70. According to the last paragraph, it is important to____________.
    A. eat something for breakfast                        B. be careful about what you eat
    C. heat up food before eating it                             D. eat calorie-controlled food
71. The text is written mainly for those_____________.
    A. who go to work early                                   B. who want to lose weight
    C. who stay up late                                   D. who eat before sleep

Four Year-Old Boy Becomes Queen Elizabeth’s Pen Pal

London, England: A four-year-old boy has become pen pals with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. Tom Stancombe started exchanging letters with the queen after he set free a balloon, carrying his name and address, at a school party and it landed in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The queen spotted(发现) the balloon and asked her personal assistant, Angela Kelly, to write a letter for her.

She wrote: “The queen was delighted to find that your balloon had traveled all the way to the gardens at Windsor Castle.”

Tom, who proudly put the letter on his wall, wrote back to say that his great, great grandfather, the artist Petrus Johannes Arundzen, had been commissioned (受委托) to copy Dutch masters on display at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace.

Angela at once replied that she would contact the Royal Collection to find out what had happened to the art works. She kept her word and two weeks later wrote to Tom to tell him what had happened to the etchings, explaining they now form part of the print collection in the Print Library.

Angela then asked a favor of Tom, writing: “Would you be able to ask your Mummy and Daddy for me if they know anything more about your great, great grandfather. Royal Collection would love to know more about him.”

Along with his parents, Tom wrote back to fill in all the gaps about Petrus Johannes Arundzen.

Although Tom’s parents don’t think there will be any more letters exchanged between the pair, they were touched that she had taken time to contact them.
