Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. The importance of wearing uniforms.

B. Practical problems of wearing uniforms.

C. Lack of variety — one of the disadvantages of wearing uniforms.

D. Wearing uniforms is popular in America.

E. Wearing uniforms looks more professional.

F. Practical benefits of wearing uniforms.

71.

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?

72.

Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian(百姓的)clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform?

73.

Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax-deductible(可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.

74.

Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tend to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.

75.

Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. At first they hit each other hard. But soon they begin knocking the other’s head with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window-and falls thirty feet down to the ground below. He is dead!

Of course he isn’t dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called “stuntmen”. That is to say, they perform “tricks”.

There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall onto hard ground but onto empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the “glass” is made of sugar!

But although their work depends on tricks of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on precise timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get serious injured- and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落伞)failed to open-and he was killed.

In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for “man only”. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are “stuntgirls” too!

67. Stuntmen do this kind of wok in order to ____________.

   A. attract people’s attention              B. earn a living

   C. enjoy themselves                    D. pretend to be actors

68. When they jump from a high building, stuntmen _______________.

   A. have parachutes                     B. are covered with a mattress

   C. have to risk their lives                D. fall in something soft

69. In order to do their job well stuntmen have to be _______________.

   A. absolutely strong                    B. precisely on time

   C. especially accurate                  D. unusually serious

70. Which of the following CAN NOT be implied from the passage?

   A. There used to be no stuntwomen.

   B. In love stories, stuntmen are not necessary.

   C. Stuntmen’s performance will improve the image of a movie.

   D. As a stuntman, he needs perfect skills as well as courage.
