Many years ago in a small German town, a Jewish businessman had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the businessman’s beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain.

The moneylender told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty bag. The girl would then have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become the moneylender’s wife and he would forgo her father’s debt. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.

They were standing on a pebble-strewn path. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. The sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. No doubt she was caught in a dilemma.

What would you have done if you were the girl? Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.

2. The girl should know that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the money-lender as a cheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.

The above story is used with the hope that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral (横向的)and logical thinking.

Read on…

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. “Oh, how clumsy of me!” she said. “But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked.” Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.

72. The underlined word “forgo” in paragraph 2 may mean ____________.

A. pay off                     B. run out              C. take over         D. give up

73. Which of the following indicates lateral thinking?

A. The girl refused to take a pebble and fled at once.

B. The girl exposed the cheat and found another way.

C. The girl picked one pebbles and made it disappear.

D. The girl picked a black pebble and accepted the result.

74. It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.

A. The girl dropped the pebble onto the path on purpose

B. The girl dropped the pebble onto the path by accident

C. The girl didn’t know there were two black pebbles in the bag

D. The girl replaced a black pebble in the bag

75. What lesson can we learn from the story?

A. Keeping calm when facing a difficult situation.

B. Thinking about a complicated problem in another way.

C. Thinking twice before making a final choice.

D. Coming up with a clever answer is easy.

The Chinese classic work of literature "A Dream of Red Mansions" has been adapted into a number of stage and screen versions over the years. Artists from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre made the classic back in 2011. And now the triennial(三年一次) China Arts Festival is recognizing their work.

The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can, hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. ◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that clay.

◆ Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.

I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.

Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up. Could he be more intent (专心的) while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.

Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality features and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best supporters, guiding them and helping them find their way.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique . It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

60. At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him _____.

   A. keep silent in the room          B. get right answers

   C. finish his homework on time         D. pay more attention to his study

61. Inspired by the case of his son, the author began to doubt ________.

   A. the importance of parents                                   B. the old form of education

   C. the relationship between kids and their parents  D. the good grades of some kids

62. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right?

A. We should help kids correct their wrong ways.

B. Parents should study their kids’ DNA.

C. Kids should be taught to behave themselves.

D. Parents should love and accept their kids.

63. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A. Study hard and you’ll be successful     B. Be friendly to your children

C. Children’s success in their own style    D. Parents’ help with their children’s study

In today’s world of cell phones, mini laptops and MP5 players, most people have at least one time-telling tool with them. Since these devices are so common, is time running out for the 500-year-old watch? According to some consumers, yes. New Jersey teenager Charlie Wollman says a watch is “an extra piece of equipment with no necessary function”. Many young adults agree and use their cell phones to tell time. It is said that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago. As a result, some people claim that the watch industry is at a crossroads.

However, watchmakers optimistically say that watches redeem popularity when consumers reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they are willing to spend money on a quality watch that doesn’t just keep good time. Fifty years ago, watchmakers boasted about their products’ accuracy. But in recent years, the watch industry has transformed itself into an accessory(饰品)business. And for many today, the image a watch communicates has become more important than the time it tells.

“Complications” --- features that go beyond simple timekeeping--- are an important part of a watch’s image. Today’s watches offer lots of features that meet almost any personality. These features include compasses, lunar calendars, USB drives, and even devices that measure the effectiveness of golf swings(挥棒方式)!

Creativity is also a key element in today’s watches. For example, Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash makes watches that don’t even look like watches. The company’s popular Shinshoku model uses different color lights to tell the time. It looks more like a fashionable bracelet (手镯) than a watch.

Whether a watch communicates fashion sense, creative gift or a love of sports, consumers want their timepieces to stand out. Nowadays, everyone has the same kind of gadget(小玩意儿) in their bags,  so people want to make a statement with what’s on their wrists. Will this interest in wrist fashion last?  Only time will tell!

56.The underlined word “redeem” in Paragraph 2 can be best replaced by “__________”.

57. According to the passage, a multi-function watch can _________.

   A. store the list of phone numbers      B. remind you of your daily affairs

   C. be used as a calculator             D. show the direction

58. In Paragraph 4, Japanese watchmaker Tokyoflash is mentioned to _________.

   A. prove today’s watches are fashionable

   B. compare a watch with a cool bracelet

   C. show how popular Shinshoku watches are.

   D. stress it’s Tokyoflash that makes Shinshoku watches

59. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

   A. Japanese watches stand out              B. Watch industry is in a bad situation

   C. Watches tell more than time             D. Watches are becoming less popular
