Teamwork is the process of a group of people working together in order to achieve a goal. It is an essential part of any business.

First and the most important, a team must have been communicated to them a clear goal to work towards. Poor communication may lead to unsatisfactory results. A strong team will also include a mixture of people, with different academic backgrounds and skills. The team must be able to talk openly and honestly to each other, sharing ideas and making suggestions while listening to and understanding what others have to say.

While many employees are able to perform important functions on their own, working as a team brings a wide range of talents and resources to a project that would be almost impossible for just one person to match. Ideas on the project itself and how to achieve its goals can be exchanged, and new points of view voiced, which would be difficult to achieve with just one person, who may be firmly fixed on one perspective (思考方法), thus lowering the quality of the results .

Because a team is a group of people, each with their own opinions and personalities, conflicts can and do arise. If not acted upon swiftly and effectively, this can lower morale (士气) in the team and reduce productivity, affecting the quality of results achieved. A team can also take longer than an individual to achieve a goal, as organizing a team often requires considerable preparation.

Having a good team working on a project ensures that the task will be dealt with thoroughly and this means the goal will be achieved with a very high quality. A good team will also create trust and confidence, both in themselves and one another. And this will benefit both the individuals and the company

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly(不顾一切地) up and down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.

I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman’s funeral. I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.

The teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would truly attract her, what would Nana say? ‘oh, what beautiful barking that dog has!’ That was Nana. ”

“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for my grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling,   “That was Nana’s way.”

Through a low sob, he continued, “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to show off.”

Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.”

There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.

When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ceremony . He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.

All over again we felt those powerful losses crossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

The first time that I had heard the term “EQ” was in the fall of 1995 when the book Emotional Intelligence,by Daniel Goleman, was widely covered by the American press. The widespread research presented in the book supported my own observations and doubts about life and emotions, and told me that I was on the right track to go after happiness. The research continues to confirm what I had concluded on my own: These feelings are extremely important to individual health, happiness, and social harmony. This might seem a bit obvious, but it was not always obvious to me.

I grew up in a family where we didn’t talk about feelings. We talked about ideas, concepts and principles. As a result,I could tell you what I thought about everything, but I couldn’t tell you how I felt about anything. After several failed relationships,I took time off to reflect on my life and realized I had made many decisions which resulted in unhappiness for myself and others. After studying the literature on emotions and feelings,I concluded that most of my poor decisions could be directly due to what is now called low emotional intelligence,or low EQ,for short. Previously,I struggled to find happiness through the traditional routes—material success. Now,however,I realize that:

There’s not much point having either wealth or relationships if you aren’t happy.

It is hard to be happy with others if you aren’t happy yourself.

It is hard to be happy alone if you don’t feel good about yourself,i.e. have high selfesteem and selfconfidence.

It is hard to have good feelings about yourself if you don’t have good emotional management skills.

Emotional management skills, the main subject of EQ,are, therefore, one of the most basic elements of happiness.

A.are wise and hardworking                                   B.are wealthy and strong

C.are not good at expressing their own feelings  D.get along badly with each other

63.Before reading the book, the author thought he could have happiness ________.

A.if he could earn a lot of money                  B.if he could avoid poor decisions

C.if he took time off to reflect on his life     D.if he ignored the traditional routes

64.A person who can’t feel happy himself ________.

A.will feel happy with lots of friends           B.will not get on well with others

C.has no selfesteem at all                         D.should read the new book on EQ

A.lack of wealth and health                               B.lack of the presence of others

C.lack of good relationships with others        D. lack of selfconfidence and selfesteem

A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”

“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.

One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title.“What is your occupation?” she asked.

The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”

The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.

I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”

Coolly, without any trace of panic(恐慌) in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (依托) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3.

Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”

Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

56. What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage?

A. The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was.

B. The recorder was impatient and rude.

C. The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced.

D. Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society.

57. How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation?

A. curious           B. puzzled            C. Indifferent(冷漠的)     D. interested

58. How did the author feel when describing her job to the clerk?

A. calm               B. panic-stricken      C. confident        D. proud

59. Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author?

A. Because the author cared little about rewards.

B. Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab.

C. Because she thought the author did admirable work.

D. Because the writer did something she had little knowledge of.

60. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A. To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.

B. To argue that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect.

C. To show that the author had a grander job than Emily.

D. To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.
