There at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass, my 14-year-old son, John, and I noticed the coat. While the other coats drooped (低垂), this one looked as if it were1itself up. The coat was beautifully made, with a Fifth Avenue label and an2price of $28, which was popular just then with 3, but could cost several hundred dollars new. John tried it on and the4was perfect.
John5the coat to school the next day and came home with a big smile. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it,” he said, 6folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a7came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness (作对) and8 discussion replaced fierce argument. He became more mannerly and9, eager to please. He would generously lend his younger brother his tapes and lecture him 10his behavior. When I mentioned this11to his teacher and wondered what caused the changes, she said laughing. “It 12be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned 13but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran14a friend. “Could this be John?” he asked surprisingly,15John’s new height, appreciating the cut of his coat and holding out his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never 16a person’s clothes for the real person within them. 17, there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for18what is on the inside with what is on the outside.
For John, it is a time when it is as easy to try on different19to life as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape20all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

I got lots of interesting experiences in a free school. At first I couldn’t believe it. There were no 1lin rows or loud-sounding bells, nor did anyone have to go to2. Although we lived “in”,3made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no “ lights out”.
The4thing was that practically all the students went to class, and very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or5class. The new ones always went wild6, but his wildness never lasted long. The freedom took some getting used to. Our teachers treated us like7; never did we have to8“ stand up”, “ sit down”, “ speak out”. I don’t9one student who didn’t try his best.
The subjects were the same as those in the10 school, but what a difference in the method! For example, in botany (植物学) we had 11 classes in the spring or fall, but instead we planted two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. Then in winter we each studied a few12things about what we had grown. In math the students built three different sizes of storerooms---small ones13, but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a14time, too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints(蓝图;设计图), figuring out the angles and so on. I didn’t take 15 . But I could do the basic things with numbers. That’s16.
17 I think I am a18person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my age, and I think better. That’s probably a real big19between the free school and the regular school--- the amount of20.

How often do you change your hairstyle or ask for new dresses? You may be1to follow trends(潮流)in Western countries, but young people in the United States don’t care as much about2as you do.
A recent survey among high school 3in China, Japan, South Korea and the US found that 4teenagers care more about their appearance than young people in the US.
This survey was held in 156 high schools in the four countries. More than 7,000 teenagers were5about their views on life and the world. South Koreans, at 83 per cent, cared most about their looks. They were6by the Chinese and Japanese, while US students showed the least interest in fashion at only 33 per cent.
“The different results show7of cultural background,” said Sun Yunxiao from the China Youth and Children Research Centre. He explained that in the US there are many different8of beauty, so teens are more9to be confident about their appearance.
US teenagers’ high self-confidence is displayed in the10. About 85 per cent are happy with themselves. The percentage of self-confident Chinese students stands at only 30 per cent.
What’s11, US students showed more individuality, with 88 per cent12that “people should follow their own interests rather than13of others”. This is much14than South Korea’s 69 per cent, China’s 49 and Japan’s 48.
Japanese students, at 52 per cent, are most dissatisfied with modern society. Chinese and Koreans follow at second and15most dissatisfied.
16to the survey, Chinese students are happy and disciplined. They have a strong wish to make a difference.17Chinese students need to be more independent and learn how to relax,” said Sun.
The students have different18backgrounds. But home and places where friends gather are the favorite places all teens seek happiness.
Exams and worries about life after graduation cause much19among most of the teens20for the survey.
