Which came first, the chicken or the egg? This is one of life’s 1 questions and people have been debating about it for thousands of years. Now scientists believe they have solved this 2. Researchers from Sheffield and Warwick Universities in England discovered the answer 3. They used a super computer to observe the shell-making process while a new shell was 4. Then they found one protein called OCl7 that is 5 for forming eggshell. This is only found inside a chicken’s body, which is proof that the 6 came first. The team was 7 looking at how animals and birds make eggshells but suddenly made their surprising 8. The big question now is where chickens came from. The 9 is from dinosaurs.
The research team said eggshells are one of nature’s most 10 creations. Professor John Harding from the team told reporters: “Understanding how chickens make eggshells is fascinating in itself, but it can also be 11 in designing new materials.” Eggshells are very lightweight but incredibly strong. Even the most up-to-date materials 12 by the world’s top engineers can not produce anything as 13 as an eggshell. Professor Harding added that 14 eggshells could help to cure bone diseases and design materials for the construction industry.“Nature has found wonderful ways that 15 for all kinds of problems in materials science and technology — we can learn a lot from them.” he said.

I remember one Thanksgiving when our family had no money and no food, and someone came knocking on our door. A man was1 there with a huge box of food, a giant turkey and even some2to cook it in. I couldn’t3it. My dad demanded, “Who are you? Where are you from?” The stranger announced, “I’m here because a friend of yours knows you’re in need and that you wouldn’t accept4help, so I’ve brought this for you. Have a great Thanksgiving.” My father said, “No, no, we5 accept this.” The stranger replied, “You don’t have6” , closed the door and left.
Obviously that experience had a profound impact(深刻影响)on my life. I7myself that someday I would do well enough financially8 I could do the same thing for other people. By the time I was eighteen I had created my Thanksgiving ritual(习惯). I would go out9 and buy enough food for one or two10. Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the11 neighborhood and just knock on a12 . I always13 a note that explained my Thanksgiving experience14a kid. The note said, “All that I ask15is that you take good enough care of16 so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of17 I’ve ever earned.
Years ago I was in New York City with my new wife during Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family.18she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were19 in a hotel room. When I told her what I always did on Thanksgiving, she got excited.
We packed enough food for seven families for thirty days and went to buildings where half a dozen people lived in one room with no electricity and no heat in winter surrounded by rats, cockroaches(蟑螂)and the smell of urine(尿). It was both an20realization that people lived in this way and a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference.

Man-made Causes
Man-made causes probably do the most damage. There are many man-made causes.1is one of the biggest man-made problems. Pollution2in many shapes and sizes. Burning fossil fuels is one thing that causes pollution. Fossil(化石) fuels(燃料)are fuels made of organic matter such as coal, or oil. when fossil fuels are burned they3a green house gas called CO2. Also mining coal and oil allows methane to escape. How does it escape? Methane(甲烷)is4in the ground.5coal or oil is mined you have to dig up the earth a little. When you dig up the fossil fuels you dig up the methane as well.
Another major man-made6of Global Warming is population. More people7more food, and more methods of transportation, right? That means more methane because8will be more burning of fossil fuels, 9more agriculture. Now you’re probably thinking, “Wait a minute, you said agriculture is going to be damaged by Global Warming, but10you’re saying agriculture is going to help cause Global Warming?” Well, have you11been in a barn filled with animals and you smell something12? You re13methane. Another source of methane is manure. Because more food is needed we have to raise food. Animals like cows are a source of food which means more manure and methane. Another problem14the increasing population is15. More people means more cars, and more cares means more pollution. Also, many people have more than one car.
Since CO2 contributes to global warming, the increase in population makes the problem worse because we breathe out CO2.16, the trees that change our CO2 to oxygen are being demolished because we’re using the land that we cut the trees down from as property17our homes and buildings. We are not replacing the trees(an important part of our ecosystem), so we are18taking19of our natural resources and giving nothing back in20.
