“People believe that they can go out and buy gifts because it’s the holidays, 5they can’t afford to do so,” says Dorothy Cantor, a noted psychologist and former APA president. “Not only is it stressful to feel that you have to buy everyone an expensive gift, but you will also be stressed for the rest of the year trying to pay your 6. You can show love and caring by giving something that you know is meaningful and 7 that doesn’t have to cost a lot.”
While managing money issues during the holiday season can be a 8, financial experts agree that you can 9 pressure by planning ahead, exhibiting patience and managing expectations to make the holiday season enjoyable and worry-free.
For starters, make an agreement with family members to discuss holiday spending and finances before you make any 10. The goal here is to learn one another’s thoughts and feelings about priorities and wishes. Be realistic, decide together on a budget and only use cash, rather than using credit cards. Avoid getting 11 unreasonable expectations. It makes no 12 to buy gifts you can not afford and put additional financial and emotional stress on yourself and your family that will cause problems long after the holidays are over.
Other ways to 13 the burden of money-related holiday blues include an understanding that everyone faces money problems at one time or another. It’s important to keep your 14 situation in perspective, to learn from experience and then to proceed with your life.
And lastly, make focusing on financial solutions a part of your New Year’s resolution. It’s the perfect time to take a 15 approach by doing some soul-searching, forgiving yourself, letting go of the past and dealing with your financial problems in a businesslike manner each day.

I ran into a stranger as he passed by. “I’m so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuse me too… I wasn’t1watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went2our way after saying goodbye.
But at3, a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I4the meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I5knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown (皱眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart6. I didn’t realize how rudely I had spoken.
That night, when I lay7in bed, God’s quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While8with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite… Go look around on the kitchen floor, you’11 find some flowers there by the9. Those are the flowers she brought for you. She10them herself — pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly and you never saw the11in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt (跪) by her12. “Wake up, my,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree, I13them in a napkin(纸巾), just for you. I knew you’d like them, especially the14.” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today… And I15have fussed (大惊小怪) at you that way…”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s OK… I still love you16.” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I LOVE the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the17you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave18will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our19than into our families--- an unwise investment (投资) indeed.

A Charlotte, N.C., man was charged with first-degree murder of a 79-year-old woman whom police said he scared to death. In an attempt to evade policemen after a bank robbery, the Associated Press reports that 20-year-old Larry Whitfield broke into the home of Mary Parnell. Police say he didn’t touch Parnell but that she died after suffering a heart attack that was caused by terror. Can the guy be held responsible for the woman’s death? Prosecutors(公诉人) said that he can under the state’s murder rule, which allows someone to be charged with murder if he or she causes another person’s death while committing or fleeing from a severe crime like robbery—even if he or she doesn’t kill someone on purpose.
But, medically speaking, can someone actually be frightened to death? We asked Martin Samuels, chairman of the neurology department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Absolutely, no question about it.
The body has a natural protective method called the fight-or-flight response(战或逃反应), which was originally described by Walter Cannon, the chairman of Harvard University’s physiology department from 1906 to 1942. If, in the wild, an animal is faced with a life-threatening situation, the autonomic nervous system responds by increasing heart rate, increasing blood flow to the muscles, and slowing digestion, among other things. All of this increases the chances of succeeding in a fight or running away from an aggressive beast. This process certainly would be of help to primitive humans. However, in the modern world there is obvious decline of the fight-or-flight response.
The autonomic nervous system uses the chemical messenger to send signals to various parts of the body to activate the fight-or-flight response. This chemical is toxic in large amounts; it damages the organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. It is believed that almost all sudden deaths are caused by damage to the heart. There is almost no other organ that would fail so fast as to cause sudden death. Kidney failure, liver failure, those things don’t kill you suddenly.
By the way, any strong positive or negative emotions such as happiness or sadness can cause the same result. There are people who have died in intercourse or in religious passion. There was a case of a golfer who hit a hole in one, turned to his partner and said, “I can die now”, and then he dropped dead. For about seven days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon there was an increase of sudden cardiac death among New Yorkers.

  1. 1.

Why the Charlotte, N.C., man was charged?

    1. A.
Because he threatened the policemen to kill an old woman.
    2. B.
Because he caused an old woman’s terror and she died.
    3. C.
Because he beat an old woman and caused her heart attack
    4. D.
Because he murdered an old woman while robbing a bank.
  2. 2.

What is Martin Samuels’ attitude to the possibility of being frightened to death?

    1. A.
      Approval.
    2. B.
      Disapproval.
    3. C.
      Doubtful.
    4. D.
      Indifferent.
  3. 3.

Which of the following about the fight-or-flight response is true?

    1. A.
The fight-or-flight response was raised and proved by Martin
  4. 4.

What activity can we infer is less likely to damage the organs?

    1. A.
      Winning a big lottery.
    2. B.
      Missing a dead family.
    3. C.
      Watching a horror movie.
    4. D.

    2. B.
to offer some advice on protecting us from heart failure
    3. C.

My husband hasn't stopped laughing about the thing that happened to me. It's 1now but it wasn't at that time.
Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I 2 a rest before catching the train, so I bought a 3 and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop that was a cheap, self-service place with long 4 to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to 5 a place, and went to get a cup of coffee.

Being alone in outer space can be frightening. That is one reason why astronauts on solo (单独的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them1. They were also constant communication with people on the earth. 2 , being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine (潜水艇) voyages. It will also happen on 3space flights in the future. Will there be special problem of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of4is. When men are 5together for a long period, they begin to feel uneasy. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very 6.
Apparently, although no one wants to be 7all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called a stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of 8or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to9stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in 10our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress.
