阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中选出最佳选项。

Culture means any human behavior (表现) that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations (一代人) through tradition or social learning. From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture. Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.

Culture is necessary for the survival (存活) and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. This statement is well supported by some well-written cases. Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children's home was told by local villagers that there were“ghosts(鬼)”in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living with a pack of wolves in the forest. These children were the ghosts described by the local people. In his diary, the director described his first view of Kamala ( as the older child was named) and Amala (the name given to the younger child):

[Kamala was] a terrible-looking being…the head a big ball of something covering the shoulders…Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size. Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes…[They were] very fond of raw (生的) meat and raw milk…Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours…Just like squirrels.

Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking part in a cultural community (团体). They learn a certain human language as well as certain kinds of human behavior through their membership in certain cultural community.

1.From the passage we can learn that ________.

[ ]

A.human beings can only develop human abilities if they are raised by their biological (生物学的) parents

B.Amala and Kamala were raised in a forest by ghosts

C.culture refers only to the high art and classical music of a particular society

D.human being will not grow up human unless they are raised by human beings in human culture

2.Who were the“ghosts”of the Midnapore forest seen by the local villagers?

[ ]

A.They were two children, Amala and Kamala, who ran on fours.

B.They were two young wolves, Amala and Kamala, whose eyes were bright and sharp.

C.They were two children, Amala and Kamala, who were growing up in a children's home.

D.They were two squirrels, Amala and Kamala, who ran on fours.

3.Which of the following do you think can be the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.A Director's Diary

B.Culture and Language Learning

C.Culture and Human Behavior

D.Wolf-children

Many new students find it hard to do all the study that has to be done; they find themselves putting off reading assignment(作业) , jumping from one subject to another and rarely being quite certain what they are trying to do during a particular study session (期间) . The best way to overcome these difficulties and to start studying efficiently (高效地) is to plan your time and organize your work. Let us suppose that you have 15 hours per week of classes and that you decide to allow yourself a 40-hour-working week (a reasonable figure, leaving you 70 waking hours for other activities).

You now have to decide how to divide the remaining 25 hours of private study. Naturally the decisions you make will change from week to week according to what essays have to be written and what reading has to be done. Many people find it helpful to draw up each week a seven-day-timetable showing the occasions on which they will be working privately and the particular subjects that they will be studying on each occasion. By checking such a plan at times during the week, you can see what you have done and what you have still to do: the whole plan becomes more manageable. There are a number of places where you can study—college library, public library, home, empty classrooms, on bus or train—and each has several obvious advantages and disadvantages. The college library is least busy in the evening, on Wednesday afternoon, and all day Friday and Saturday.

When you are deciding where to study, keep the following suggestions in mind:

1.Try to study always in the same place. After a while the familiar surroundings (环境) will help you to switch into the right frame (框架) of mind as soon as you sit down.

2.Find somewhere with as few distractions (干扰物) as possible.

3.Make sure that your study place has a good light and is warm (but not too warm) and well aired.

1.Many new students find it hard ________.

[ ]

A.to delay their reading
B.to make a good plan
C.to study efficiently
D.to jump from subject to subject

2.What's the main idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Find a quiet place for study.
B.Plan your time and organize your work.
C.Overcome your difficulties.
D.Be sure what you can do.

3.A student's organization of his work will need to change according to ________.

[ ]

A.what he has to write and read that week
B.how marry hours he is awake
C.how many lectures he misses
D.how many subjects are required

4.A student is advised to make a weekly plan and to check it from time to time in order to ________.

[ ]

A.see what day of the week it is
B.see how he feels for the whole week
C.see whether he has calculated it properly
D.see what work still needs doing

Today is the date of that afternoon in April a year ago when I first saw the strange and attractive doll (玩具娃娃) in the window of Abe Sheftel's toy shop on Third Avenue near Fifteenth Street, just around the corner from my office, where the plate on the door reads: Dr Samuel Amory. I remember just how it was that day: the first sign of spring floated across the East River, mixing with the soft coal smoke from the factories and the street smells of the poor neighbourhood. As I turned the corner on my way to work and came to Sheftel's. I was made once more known of the poor collection of toys in the dusty window, and I remembered the coming birthday of a small niece of mine in Cleveland, to whom I was in the habit of sending small gifts. Therefore I stopped and examined the window to see if there might be anything suitable, and looked at the collection of unattractive objects—a red toy fire engine, some lead soldiers, cheap baseballs, bottles of ink, pens, yellow envelopes and advertisements for soft-drinks. And thus it was that my eyes finally came to rest upon the doll stored away in one corner, a doll with the strangest, most charming expression on her face. I could not wholly make her out, due to the shadows and film of dust through which I was looking, but I was sure that a deep impression had been made upon me as though I had run into a person, as one does sometimes with a stranger, with whose personality one is deeply impressed.

1.What made an impression on the author?

[ ]

A.The doll's unusual face.

B.A stranger he met at the store.

C.The collection of toys.

D.The beauty and size of the doll.

2.Why does the author mention his niece?

[ ]

A.She likes dolls.

B.She lives near Sheftel's.

C.He was looking for a gift for her.

D.The doll looks like her.

3.Why did the writer go past Sheftel's?

[ ]

A.He wanted to buy some envelopes.

B.He was looking for a present for his niece.

C.He was on his way to school.

D.He was on his way to work.

4.The story takes place in ________.

[ ]

A.late summer
B.early spring
C.late autumn
D.midsummer

A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary(不同寻常的) piece of reading. It is extraordinary first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sport to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment(评论)and special features (特写) as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism(评论) of books, art, theatre and music. A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next: A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality(时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality(地点) now. But being immediate and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient (短暂的) value. For all these reasons, no two people read really the same paper: what each person does is to put together out of the pages of that day's paper, his own selection and sequence(结果) , his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspaper efficiently (有效地) , which means getting what you want from them without missing things You reed and without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness(自我觉察) as you are using your techniques of reading.

Most musicians agree that the best violins were first made in Italy. They were made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. These violins sound better then any others. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the old Italian violins. But they aren't the same. Musicians still prefer the old ones. No one really knows why these old Italian violins are so special, but many people think they have an answer.

Some people think it is the age of the violins. They say that today's violins will also sound wonderful some day. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only those made in Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer. There must be something different about Cremona or those Italian violin makers.

Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. The wood of the violin is very important. It must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of Cremons know something special about wood for violins.

But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this was the secret of the Italians. Maybe they understood more than we do about how to cut the wood.

Size and shape may not be the answer, either. Scientists measured these old violins very carefully. They can make new ones that are exactly 'the same size and shape. But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish, which covers the wood of the violin and makes it look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. No one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish. So no one can make the same varnish today.

There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. Their secret may be last for ever. Young musicians today hope this is not true. They reed fine violins. But there aren't very many of the old violins left. Also, the old violins are very expensive. Recently, a famous old Italian violin was sold for about $300,000 US dollars!

1.Same scientists believe the old Italian violins have a special ________.

[ ]

A.size
B.shape
C.sound
D.surface

2.It is thought that the beat violins ________.

[ ]

A.were made in Italy about 200 years ago

B.were made in Cremona, Italy, many years ago

C.are made with modern techniques

D.are made by best violin makers

3.Some people think that modern violins ________.

[ ]

A.will sound as good or perhaps worse in the future

B.will sound better in the future

C.will never be as old as those from Cremona

D.sound wonderful naturally

4.Violins made today ________.

[ ]

A.sound as good as the old ones

B.are better than the old ones

C.look the same as the old ones

D.have the same varnish as the old ones

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, some high schools in America wanted the students to pledge allegiance (宣誓效忠) to the flag. Is it necessary? Let's see what the kids think of this requirement.

Lea Mouallem, Marymount High School

I believe that saying the Pledge of Allegiance is a way of reminding our country that no matter what happens, we are united. I don't think our president wants us to go and join the army now, but he wants to tell us that we will be able to overcome the disaster as a whole nation that is working together.

Harry Chin, 15 , Culver City High School

I am not for the Pledge of Allegiance and I am not against it either because I just say it so many times that it loses meaning. I say it every day at school in the second period. It doesn't mean anything any more.

David Tran, 15, Warren High School

The Pledge of Allegiance is another sign of country. We should have some respect for it. In many schools, we don't say the Pledge every morning—we just stand up and let the National Anthem (国歌) ring through the silence. We said the Pledge of Allegiance on September 12.

Danny Maryanor, 16, Santa Monica High School

I wonder why we were suddenly asked to recite the Pledge when many of us stopped after elementary school; and the Pledge was recited before the play of“Ode to Joy”(欢乐颂) with recorders. This was not to express patriotism(爱国主义) , or even to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

I feel I cannot support a nation that in this time of crisis(危机) looks outward for revenge (报复) instead of inward for peace. Perhaps we should think more about our problems.

1.According to the passage, it can be leaned that ________.

[ ]

A.all high schools will require their students to pledge allegiance to the flag

B.all kids don't agree to the requirement of saying the Pledge of Allegiance

C.all high school students say yes to the Pledge of Allegiance

D.all high school students say no to the Pledge of Allegiance

2.Saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag first appeared in American schools ________.

[ ]

A.after September 12, 2001

B.after September 11, 2001

C.on September 11, 2001

D.even before September 11, 2001

3.Who were for the Pledge of Allegiance?

[ ]

A.Lea Mouallem; David Tran.

B.Harry Chin; Danny Maryanor.

C.Harry Chin; David Tran.

D.Lea Mouallem; Danny Maryanor.

4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.Lea Mouallem thinks the Pledge of Allegiance is pointless.

B.Harry Chin thinks the government wants them to join the army now.

C.The Pledge of Allegiance is considered by David Tran to be about another country.

D.Danny Maryanor feels the terrorist attacks happened partly because of America's own problem.

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中选出最佳选项。

I would like to suggest that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening all television broadcasting in the United States be forbidden by law, especially after the evening news.

Let us take a serious reasonable look at what the results might be if such a suggestion were accepted: family members might use the time for a real family hour. They might sit together around after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that most of our problems—everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illnesses—are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional(情感的) difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better.

On the evening when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover more active pastimes (娱乐). Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset or they might take a walk together. With free time and no TV, children and adults might settle down to read. There is more to expect in a good book than in a TV program. Educators report that the generation growing up with television can hardly write an English sentence, even at college level. Writing is often learned from reading. A more literate new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.

A different form of reading might also be done as it was in the past: reading aloud. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the quiet hour ends, the TV networks might even be forced to come up with better shows in order to get us back from our newly discovered activities.

At first glance, this idea seems radical (激进的). What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? How will we spend the time? But it's not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radio, but also with reading, learning, talking, playing games and inventing new activities. It wasn't that difficult. The truth is we had a ball.

1.According to the writer, ________ causes many problems, such as generation gap and high divorce rate.

[ ]

A.not being able to read good books

B.failure to communicate with each other

C.not knowing each other better

D.television broadcasting

2.If the television broadcasting were forbidden after the evening news, the Americans might ________.

[ ]

A.have emotional difficulty of one kind or another

B.go to enjoy themselves on the seashore

C.discover a lot more pastimes

D.discuss the generation gap and high divorce rate

3.If there was no television, the people ________.

[ ]

A.could also enjoy themselves

B.played ball

C.lived a hard life

D.had to listen to the radio

4.A more literate generation refers to the people who ________.

[ ]

A.are well informed about English and American literature

B.can hardly write an English sentence

C.can write an English sentence at college level

D.are well educated
