阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C,D)中,选出最佳选项。

It was the first photograph that I had ever seen, and it interested me. I can remember holding it at every angle (角度) in order to catch the flickering light from the oil lamp on the dresser. The man in the photograph was unsmiling, but his eyes were kind. I had never met him, but I felt that I knew him. One evening when I was looking at the photograph, as I always did before I went to sleep. I noticed a shadow across the man's thin face. I moved the photograph so that the shadow lay perfectly around his cheeks. How different he looked!

That night I could not sleep, thinking about the letter that I would write. First, I would tell him that I was eleven years old, and that if he had a little girl my age, she could write to me instead of him. I knew that he was a very busy man. Then I would explain to him my real purpose of the letter. I would tell him how wonderful he looked with the shadow that I had seen across his photograph, and I would most carefully suggest that he grow whiskers (连鬓胡子).

Four months later when I met him at the train station near my home in Westfield, New York, he was wearing a full beard. He was so much taller than I had imagined from my tiny photograph.

“Ladies and gentlemen,”he said.“I have no speech to make and no time to make it in. I appear before you so that I may see you and that you may see me.”Then he picked me right up, and kissed me on both cheeks.“Do you think I look better, my little friend?”he asked me.

My name is Grace Bedell, and the man in the photograph was Abraham Lincoln.

1.What is the writer's main purpose in the passage?

[ ]

A.To explain how Grace Bedell took a photograph of Abraham Lincoln.

2.The word“flickering”(in Paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to ________.

[ ]

A.burning unsteadily

D.burning continuously

3.From the passage it may be inferred that________.

[ ]-

A.Grace Bedell was the only one to meet Abraham Lincoln at the train station when he stopped at Westfield

B.there were many people waiting for Lincoln to arrive at the train station

C.Lincoln made a long speech at the station in Westfield

D.Lincoln was surprised to see the little girl

4.Why did the little girl write the man a letter?

[ ]

The United States will introduce a new and comprehensive (综合的) exam for students who seek to study in America and other English-speaking countries, Xin Hua News Agency(新华社) reported from New York.

The exam, which stands for a great change from the current English level test, was disclosed by Theresa Chang-whei Jen, associate director of the International Service of the US College Board, America's leading educational organization.

The Advanced Placement International English Language ( APIEL) will be offered for the first time throughout the world on May 10, 2002, said Jen.

However, the APIEL is a strange title to most Chinese students, and it is unlikely to soon gain the similar popularity of other already existing exams, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) , the GRE (Graduate Record Examination ), or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

“I have never heard of such a test and I would prefer the IELTS if I need another exam,”said Xu Jingyan, a graduating student from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (北京航天航空大学), who wants to study in England and has already taken the TOEFL.

Most of Xu's classmates have never heard of the APIEL.“The APIEL is designed for international students who wish to get university studies in English-speaking countries, including the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia.”said Jen.

The APIEL has been adopted, said Jen, because the TOEFL can no longer accurately (准确地) reflect the abilities of students to use the English language comprehensively in an academic environment. Xin Hua reported that a fairly large number of foreign students who earned high scores in TOEFL exam turned out to be very ordinary educational performers after admission(录取).

Compared with the TOEFL, the APIEL, measures a student's ability to read, write, speak and understand English through testing his or her skills in listening comprehension, speaking with accuracy (精确) and resourcefulness (机智), and writing with clarity (明晰) and fluency (流畅), Jen said.

1.The United States will introduce a new exam because ________.

[ ]

A.more and more students want to get further education in the USA

B.the Chinese people pay special attention to English studies with China's entry into the WTO

C.the already existing exam systems seem to be far from perfect

D.it will bring the US government quite a lot of money

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the selection?

[ ]

A.It will take quite a period of time for people to accept the APIEL.

B.The TOEFL is more popular with the Chinese than the IELTS.

C.A student will have to take the APIEL if he or she wants to study in English-speaking countries from 2002 on.

D.Chinese students will prefer the IELTS rather than the APIEL even in the future.

3.The underlined word current (in Paragraph 2) means ________.

[ ]

A.modern
B.present
C.standard
D.formal

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the news report?

[ ]

If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like“Shakespeare”, “Samuel Johnson”, and“Webster”, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn't even speak English—William the Conqueror.

Before 1006, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Leltic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs lasted, English today would be close to German.

But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction (区别) between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans are doing most of the eating.

When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more“foreign”than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man's ambition.

1.The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were ________.

[ ]

A.Welsh and Scottish

B.Nordic and Germanic

C.Celtic and Old English

D.Anglo-Saxon and Germanic.

2.Which of the following groups of words are by influence, rooted in French?

[ ]

A.president, lawyer, beef

B.president, bread, water

C.bread, field, sheep

D.folk, field, cow

3.Why does France appear less foreign than Germany to Americans on their first visit to Europe?

[ ]

A.Most advertisements in France appear in English.

B.They know little of the history of the English language.

C.Many French words are similar to English ones.

D.They know French better than German.

4.What is the subject discussed in the text?

[ ]

A.The history of Great Britain.

B.The similarity between English and French.

C.The rule of England by William the Conqueror.

D.The French influences on the English Language.

If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand and the other side with your right hand. Then you will not have a free finger to use while reading.

If you move your head, place your chin in one hand, and hold your head still.

If you read no more than one or two words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in more words at each glance as your eyes travel across the lines of words.

Here in Alaska, the wolf almost disappeared a few years ago, because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport. However, laws were passed to protect the wolves from sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.

A wolf naturally lives on animals in the deer family. People there also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by changes in the plant life there. When the deer can't find enough food, they die.

IF the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, the deer will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too. So we must change the life cycle there. If we killed more wolves, we would save them from starving. We also save deer and some farm animals.

In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens for food. Farmers want the United States government to send a team of scientists to study the problem. They believe it is necessary to kill wolves in some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small population.

1.In Alaska, laws have been passed to ________.

B.protect wolves from becoming dangerous

C.keep wolves from killing large numbers of deer

2.Why is it that if wolves go on killing a good many deer the wolves will die out?

[ ]

A.Because wolves mainly live on deer.

B.Because the wolves will have no deer to kill.

C.Because people will kill them for punishment.

D.Because killing deer is dangerous

3.In order to protect more deer from being killed, one way is to ________.

[ ]

Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a worthwhile activity.

Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables picked at their best are better than those bought from markets. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition (营养)of the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.

Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening attractive for many people. Besides, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for families.

Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular base may result in failure and a negative (消极的) feeling toward gardening.

One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small , well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable (有益的) than a large one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house so the gardener can work at it at irregular moments.

Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.

1.Which of the following is true about home-grown vegetables?

[ ]

A.They can remain standing for a long time and needn't be picked immediately.

B.They have to be eaten as soon as they are picked.

C.They sell well in the market because of their top quality.

D.Vegetables picked at the right moment are more nutritious than those bought from the market.

2.Why is vegetable gardening attractive for many people?

[ ]

A.It requires little money.

B.It is enjoyable and profitable.

C.It provides vegetables for the family all the year round.

D.They can work in the vegetable garden at irregular moments.

3.It is suggested in the passage that an ideal (理想的) vegetable ________.

[ ]

A.should be large-sized
B.should have full soil
C.should be sunny
D.should be within walking distance

4.From the passage we can conclude that ________.

[ ]

A.vegetable gardening is a good way to kill time for old people

B.vegetables can be grown in almost any kind of soil

C.vegetables need little care while growing

D.vegetable gardening is a necessary part of life for people
