Ancient history is better understood and our knowledge of the past is directly increased when the remains of old animals and cities are unearthed (发掘). Among the animals that wandered(游荡) through the world of long ago are some which have now entirely died out, but sometimes the bones of such creatures are found in the earth by the scientist. From these bones he is able to reconstruct (修复) the skeleton (骨架) of the animal and from the skeleton he can obtain quite a good idea of its appearance . If a man on his way to work in the morning were to meet one of these prehistoric (史前的)creatures, he would get the biggest shock of his life. Among them were the various kinds of dinosaurs(恐龙), the bones of which have been found both in Europe and in America. Some of them walked on four legs, but others stood partly upright and walked on their back legs only, like a bird. But they were not to be compared with a bird in size. The dinosaurs were the biggest animals that ever walked on the surface of the earth. Some were twelve feet high; some were sixty feet long, others eighty feet long! The length, say, of six or seven big motorcars end to end. The upper bone of the back leg of one was the size of a tall man, six feet two inches in length. Imagine another creature, which had a head the size of a room doorway, eight feet in length, and with three bony points on it. Or imagine another with plates (盾片) sticking up on edge along its back perhaps for the purpose of keeping off the attacks of animals that wanted to eat it. At one period of history these dinosaurs were the masters of the earth. Now not one remains. Our knowledge of them is wholly obtained from the bones that have been found here and there buried in the ground.

Other buffed remains are a sign of the activities of ancient men. The archaeologist (考古学家) digs up objects proving that civilization is not the product only of modem times. Old cities yield (透露,暴露) up their treasures. Beautiful pottery (陶器) is brought to light after lying buried for centuries. Inscriptions (碑文) on stone tell of the activities of men long since dead. The languages of the ancient Egyptians was for long a puzzle to the Egyptologist and no one was able to understand the inscriptions found on ancient Egyptian stones. By good fortune , however, a piece of stone was found near Rosetta in the Nile Delta. The Stone proved to be the key to old Egyptian language, because the Greek on it could be understood.

1.According to the passage, ________ prehistoric animals now died out.

[ ]

A.some
B.all
C.most
D.few

2.All of the following are true EXCEPT that ________.

[ ]

A.dinosaurs once lived in America and Europe

B.some dinosaurs walked on two legs

C.some birds were bigger than dinosaurs

D.some dinosaurs’ heads had the size of a room doorway

3.The sentence “civilization is not the product of only modem times” in the last paragraph means ________.

[ ]

A.civilization exists only in ancient times

B.civilization exists only in modem times

C.civilization exists in ancient times, and in modem times as well

D.civilization exists neither in ancient times nor in modem times

4.The Stone is one of the most valuable stones in the world because ________.

[ ]

A.it told activities of ancient people

B.it was found in Egypt

C.it enabled archaeologists to understand old Egyptian

D.it enabled archaeologists to understand Greek

5.The passage mainly discusses ________.

[ ]

B.prehistoric animals and civilizations

C.that dinosaurs once lived on the earth

D.how we obtain knowledge of the past

The dark smoke that comes out of stacks (烟囱) or from a burning dump (垃圾) contains tiny bits of solid or liquid matter. The smoke also contains many gases, most of which cannot be seen. Altogether, they make up the serious problems of air pollution. In so many places it keeps us from seeing the sun, irritates (刺激) our eyes, causes us to cough, and makes us ill.

Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow” from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So, air pollution really is a global (全球性的)problem.

Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory (呼吸的) diseases, In London, in 1952, four thousand people died in one week as a result of a serious air-pollution episode (一连串事件中的一个). In 1948, in the small town of Donora, Pennsylvania, twenty people died in a four-day period of bad air pollution.

At levels (平原) often found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases, of course, smoking and other factors help to cause these illnesses, too, but these cases have increased greatly during recent years as air pollution has become worse.

Air pollution can cause both airplane and auto accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be horn with serious birth defects (缺陷,缺点). Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals we are apt to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers.

Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes (腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive (毁灭性的) effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is astronomical (极大的). It would be much more worth while, both for us and for the environment, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control.

1.The direct cause of air pollution is ________.

[ ]

A.dark smoke from stacks or a burning dump

B.tiny bits solid or liquid matter

C.lots of invisible gases

D.chemicals in the air

2.Which of the following is NOT the bad effect of air pollution?

[ ]

A.Keeping us from seeing the sun.

B.Killing babies and older people.

C.Spreading diseases.

D.Causing car accidents.

3.The reason why air pollution can cause plane accidents is that ________.

[ ]

A.it irritates our eyes

B.it causes us to cough

C.it keeps us from seeing clearly

D.it increases the risks of lung diseases

4.Some babies are born with serious illness because of ________.

[ ]

A.black snow

B.respiratory diseases

C.chemicals in the air

D.damage to crops and forests

5.The purpose of the passage is to ________.

[ ]

A.explain what is air pollution

B.show how terrible air pollution is

C.discuss whether air pollution can cause changes in our cells

D.persuade people to spend mere money on air pollution control

It’s summertime, and the living is easy. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is on vacation, weather is great, and most of all, because we all deserve (应该得到) a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot.

Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants (移民) had to travel to get to New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they weren’t content to stay there. Explorers (探险者) and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west to develop these new areas. As a remit of westward migration (迁移), Americans eventually (最后) occupied (占领) the whole continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that the average American moves every five years.

Besides their habit of changing addresses, Americans are used to travelling. Some people make long-distance commutes(通勤) to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel.

Most Americans prefer to travel within their nation’s borders. Why? For one thing, it’s cheaper than traveling abroad, and there’s no language problem. But besides that, the vast American territory offers numerous (大量的) tourist attractions. Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders. Major cities offer visitors a multitude (大量)of urban (都市的) delights: The convenience of modem freeways, railways and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie.

After the end of the Second World War, the Russians became very interested in the possibility of travelling into space, and they launched (发射) several rockets which went round the Earth high above the air. To go higher, it is necessary to use a rocket, which will work excellently even when moving in outer space. The first rockets sent up into space carried no crew [(舰船、飞机等上的)乘务员]but only scientific instruments (仪器); the next carried animals and when these were brought back safely to earth the Russian scientists were ready to send up a man. They chose Major Yuri Gagarin to be the first pilot.

Flying a spaceship is not the same as flying an ordinary aircraft. Instead of sitting at the controls, the pilot lies flat upon a couch; and the take-off is mainly automatic (自动的), however, the pilot must always be ready in case anything goes wrong. Fortunately, all went well; the Vostok was launched by its powerful motors, and before long it was more than 100 miles up, travelling at a speed of 5 miles a second or 18,000 m.p.h.-faster than any man had travelled before. Gagarin did not feel any sensation of speed, but he could look through the porthole (舷窗) of his pressurized cabin and see the Earth far below, looking like a vast globe instead of a flat plain. He could make out coastlines, rivers, forests, and clouds; he passed over Siberia, and then on to South America.

Gagarin was busy all the time making scientific measurements. Also, as the Vostok was equipped with radio, he was able to give the scientists on the ground a running commentary (实况报道) on everything he saw. Before long the spaceship passed into the Earth’s shadow; when it came out of the shadow again, the horizon (地平线) glowed (发出光和热)a brilliant orange colour.

When Gagarin had been in space for over an hour, he had nearly completed a journey right round the Earth, and it was time to prepare for the landing. This was perhaps the most dangerous part of the whole trip. If he came into the air too quickly, his ship would rub against the air particles, and the ‘friction (摩擦)would make the ship so hot that it would burn up. The speed of the Vostok had to be checked gradually (逐渐地). Again, all went well. The Vostok steadily (平稳地)dropped closer and closer to the ground until, when not far from the ground, Gagarin’s cabin was separated from the rest of the rocket. A huge parachute (降落伞) opened, and the cabin, with Gagarin in it, floated (飘,飘浮) gently down to a safe landing.

1.The Russians were ready to send up a man into space ________.

[ ]

A.when WWII was over

B.when they could go higher

C.after they had sent up a rocket with scientific instruments

D.after they had sent up animals and brought them safely back

Nature has supplied every animal except man with some covering for his body such as fur, feather, hair, shells or a thick hide (兽皮). But man has nothing but a thin skin, and for thousands of years human beings must have wandered about the world with no other coveting-though the earliest men may perhaps have been hairier than modem man.

If someone were to ask us, “Why did human beings start to cover their bodies with clothes?” most of us would answer, “To keep themselves warm, of course”.

It is only when we begin to think about it a little that we realize that clothes are worn for a great many reasons that have nothing to do with the climate, or with our need for warmth, at all.

For instance, we wear clothes to some extent in order to decorate (装饰) ourselves-to make ourselves, if possible, look more graceful (文雅的) than we are. Even the plainest clothes worn by civilized (文明的) people have their buttons, belts, collars and so forth arranged (排列) in such a way that they form a kind of decoration. The material itself is of a kind and colour that we think suits us, and is cut or arranged in a way that we think looks nice-though ideas about what looks nice change very much from time to time.

Besides decorating us our clothes have to link (联系的)us up with the people among whom we live. We feel uncomfortable if they do not “look right”-if they are not similar to those which other people of our age, sex and country are wearing.

Clothes of a special kind are often worn to show that the wearer has authority (权力) or power. The individual (个人) wearing them is treated with respect because he occupies (占据) a certain office. Clothes are an essential (不可缺少的) part of all ceremonial (仪式的) occasions, whether it is connected with religion, the law, the state, or some less important body.

Sometimes, even in civilized countries, people wear some article of clothing, or some jewel or charm (护身符), because they believe that it will bring them luck or protect them from evil(灾难) or illness, or because it is connected with their religious beliefs. None of these reasons for wearing clothes have anything to do with our need for warmth and protection from the weather.

1.At one time man may have had ________ according to the passage.

[ ]

A.some coveting

B.a thin skin

C.a thick skin

D.more hair titan other animals

2.All of the following is the reason that we wear clothes EXCEPT that ________.

[ ]

A.it protects us from the weather

B.it keeps us warm

C.it makes us more beautiful

D.it enables us to get well along with people

3.According to the 6th paragraph, the author believes that ________.

[ ]

A.you are respected as long as you wear special clothes

B.special clothes are always worn by very important people

C.special clothes are usually needed on ceremonial occasions

D.special clothes are not really needed on less important ceremonial occasions

4.Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.Besides keeping us warm, we wear clothes for many other reasons.

B.We feel comfortable if we wear clothes different from others.

C.Special clothes are often worn by lawyers, government officials, and less important people.

D.Some people wear clothes for good luck when they are ill.

5.The main idea of the passage is ________.

[ ]

A.why we wear clothes

B.how we wear clothes

Recently I attended a small exclusive (独有的) and exclusively female financial (财政的) planning seminar (研讨会). I met so many bright independent women doing interesting things in Parliament (英国国会), in business and in the professions (职业) that I was determined to turn over a new leaf and take control of my financial affairs. This, I was assured (确信) , would fill me with a new confidence. I would feel better.

My problem is Harold, the man-in-my-life. He thinks a sensible (合理的) distribution (分配) of responsibilities is when each partner works at what he or she does best. He thinks we are a liberated couple, likes our tree the way it is, and doesn’t see the need for new leaves. I watched as he sewed on a shirt button last night and thought, what a hypocrite (伪君子) he is. He’s quite comfortable sewing on the button, quite happy barefoot in the kitchen, happy, to see me lifting loads of manure to spread on our patch (小块土地) or coping with the cat’s rat under our dining room table. But he is an old fashioned MCP(male chauvinist pig) when it comes to money.

“I will probably only be away three weeks, but I have arranged for Erhardt to pay any bills,” be said, and I froze. Erhardt is out lawyer and friend, but…“I am quite capable of paying our bills when you are away,” I said.

“Do not be childish. Erhardt and I share a mailbox. He fetches his mail, so he can fetch ours and pay the bills. Easy.”

“You mean I am not to worry my pretty little head about that,” I said. He beamed (微笑) and said, “Exactly,”missing the point entirely.

Early in the development of agriculture men discovered how to make alcoholic (酒精的) drinks from grapes and com. The ancient Egyptians drank both wine and beer, and the Greeks carried on a lively trade in wine throughout the Mediter ranean. The vines of grapes are all of a single species (物种). Vitis vinifera, although there are hundreds of varieties adapted to different soils and climates.

Wine is the fermented (发酵的) juice of fresh grapes. The juice of the wine grape contains sugar, and growths of yeast (酵母) form on the outside of the grape skins. In wine making, the grapes are crushed in a wine press and the yeast converts (改变)the sugar to alcohol, when there is no air present, by a process(处理)called fermentation. Red wine is made from dark grapes, and white wine from white grapes or from dark grapes whose skins have been removed from the wine press at an early stage. The most famous wine-growing countries are France, Germany and Italy. Wine was made in England in the Middle Ages, but the climate is not really suitable for grapevines. Wines must be drunk quickly once they are opened, otherwise bacteria (细菌) will use the air to convert the alcohol to vinegar. The bacteria are killed by a higher alcohol content than is found in wine and that is why sherry and port, the specialties (特制品) of Spain and Portugal, are fortified (加度) by the addition of spirits to make them last longer.

Beer is made from barley (大麦) grains which is fermented with yeast to produce alcohol; hops are added for flavour (特别的味道) .Ale, the most common drink in England in the Middle Ages, was also made from barley, but without hops, the ale of today is merely a type of beer.
