The“standard of living”of any country means the average person’s share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country’s standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth.“Wealth” in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy“goods”such as food and clothing and“service”such as transport and entertainment.

A country’s capability to produce wealth depends upon many factors, many of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a great extent upon a country’s natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are well supplied with coal and minerals, and have a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of there things, and some regions possess none of them. USA is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she had vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and Her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.

Next to the natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. China is perhaps as well off as USA in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external wars, and for this and other reasons was unable to develop her resources. Sound and stable political conditions, and freedom from foreign invasion, enable a country to develop its natural resources peacefully and steadily and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of country’s people. Old countries that have, through many centuries, trained up numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. Wealth also produces wealth. As country becomes wealthier, its people have a large machines which will help workers to turn out more goods in their working day.

Animals and Their Languages

Animals, including insects, do not have a language like ours. They do not talk to each other in words and sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.

Can you see the rabbits' tail? When rabbits see this white tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra is angry, it raises its hood(头罩) and makes itself look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sound. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(咕咕噜噜叫) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh” or “Ah!” when we are frightened or pleased or when we drop something on our toes.

But we have something that no animals have-a large number of words which have the meanings of things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.

1.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

B.raises its hood
C.moves up and down
D.does a little dance

4.Several different sounds can be made by a ________.

Very soon a computer will be able to teach you English. It will also be able to translate any language for you too. It's just one more incredible result of the development of microprocessors-those tiny parts of a computer commonly known as “silicon chips”. So give up going to classes, stop buying more textbooks and relax. In a couple of years you won't need the international language of English.

Already Texas Instruments in the United States is developing an electronic translation machine. Imagine a Spanish secretary, for example, who wants to type a letter from the boss to a businessman in Sweden. All he or she will have to do is this: first type the letter in Spanish. The letter will appear on a television screen. After a few seconds the translated letter will appear on another television screen in Stockholm in perfect Swedish. And that's not all. Soon a computer will be able to teach you English, if you really want to learn the language. You will sit in front of a television screen and practice endless structures. The computer will tell you when you are correct and when you are wrong. It will even talk to you be-cause the silicon chips can change electrical impulses into sounds. And clever programmers can predict the responses you, the learner, are likely to make.

So think of it. You will be able to teach yourself at your own pace. You will waste very little time, and you can work at home. And if after all that, you still can't speak English you can always use the translating machine. In a few years, therefore, perhaps there will be no need for BBC modern English, or BBC English by Radio programmes-no more textbooks or teachers of English. Instead of buying an exciting new textbook, the computer will ask you to replace it with microprocessor one thousand nine hundred and eighty-four. Fast, reliable and efficient language learning and translating facilities will be available to you. Think of that no more tears or embarrassing moments. One little problem is that a computer can't laugh yet-but the scientists are working on it.Happy learning!

1.According to the writer , “you won't need the international language of English” because ________.

[ ]

A.textbooks are no longer necessary

B.it's better to buy a computer than to go to classes

C.learning English will no longer be a difficult task

D.the computer will be able to translate any language for you

2.The writer wants to tell us that if you use a computer to learn the language, you will ________.

[ ]

A.do everything at your own pace

B.need no translating machine

C.waste much of your time

D.speak better English

3.This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.someone who learns English with the help of a computer

B.what language learning could be like when computerized

C.fast, reliable and efficient language learning

D.the computer teaching the language

The human nose has given to the language of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano de Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man-courage, courteous, manly, and intellectual.

A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, made an interesting comment about Cleopatra's(克莱帕特拉,即历史上著名的埃及艳后) nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world!

Historically, man's nose has had a principal role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness: anger, pride, jealousy and revenge.

In English there are a number of phrases about nose. For example, to hold up one's nose express a basic human feeling-pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things and places.

The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man's weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, a person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.

For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase to have one's nose put out of joint is very descriptive. The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a competitor. Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.

This is only a sampling of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are a number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

1.“To hold up one's nose” is an expression of ________.

[ ]

A.contempt
B.revenge
C.anger
D.jealousy

2.A person who is “led around by the nose” ________.

[ ]

A.lets his instinct guide him

B.has no will of his own

C.must be strong-minded

D.is full of imagination

3.“A sampling of expressions” in the last paragraph means ________.

[ ]

A.quite a number of examples

B.the only example to show one's feelings

C.expressions that need more examples

D.expressions given to serve as examples

4.When you say it is “as plain as the nose on your face” you mean ________.

[ ]

A.it is the problem for you to solve

B.something looks like your nose

C.it is something quite easy to understand

D.there is a plain-looking nose on your face

5.What is the passage mainly about?

[ ]

A.The human nose as an organ for breathing and smelling.

B.The nose provides us with different kinds of expressions.

C.A famous woman poet who wished to have two noses.

D.Interesting comments made on Cleopatra's nose.

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.

Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit motionless before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these care-fully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn't keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

1.What is the text about?

[ ]

A.How to become a good teacher.

B.What a good teacher should do outside the class.

C.What teachers and actors could learn from each other.

D.The similarities and differences between a teacher's work and an actor's.

2.In what way is teacher's work different from an actor's?

[ ]

A.The teacher must learn everything by heart.

B.The teacher knows how to control his voice better than an actor.

C.The teacher has to deal with unexpected situations.

D.The teacher has to use more facial expressions.

3.The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that ________.

[ ]

A.the students must take part in their teachers' plays

B.students must keep silent while theatre audience needn't

C.no memory work is needed for the students

D.students can move around in the classroom

4.Why does a good teacher make gestures while speaking?

[ ]

A.To make his meaning clearer.

B.To draw the attention of his class.

C.To express feeling more clearly.

D.All of the above.

5.Which of the following is true?

[ ]

A.Teachers have to learn by heart what they are going to say in class.

B.A teacher cannot decide beforehand what exactly he is going to say in class.

C.A teacher must speak louder and more clearly than an actor.

D.A teacher must have a better memory and better voice than an actor.

Have you thought of coming to the USA as much as I have thought of coming to China? It seems that no matter what else might happen in the world, people wish to know other people. From an American's stand point, I will tell you that most of us are very happy that your country has been allowed into the WTO. We are also happy that you will be hosting the coming Olympics. Between the two of these things I believe that China shall become one of the greatest places around the world to do business and visit with.

I know that some of you might have a very dramatic view of the way America is. So you know, we are a society of people that are run by and governed by money. People who are elected to office in our country are done so because they have the money to pay for a campaign. I think no matter where a person lives in the world, they wish for the same things. If you think you can come over here and make something of yourself, you are right. I believe I can come to your country and make something of myself.

We are all the same around the world you see. Some of us are made to lead, while others of us are made to follow. Here in the United States we could not live the way we do if there were not those of us who do the work that is needed at the bottom of the ladder. Just as in China, we have those who must be the street cleaners, the bakers, the farmers, and all the other jobs that must be done. Like China also, most of us wish we were someplace further up the ladder; maybe a manager of a big company, maybe a famous doctor or actor. The streets are not paved with gold in the United States. It does take hard work to make it.

I would like to tell you all that we do not carry any prejudice towards you.Your people and your culture are much respected throughout the United States. You are known as an intelligent(clever) and resourceful(机智的) people. I hope someday that our countries will be open enough that travel between them will be like travel between the United States and Europe.

Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1, 510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor. St. Helena, and 1, 950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海军上将) of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.

Coming in a close second-and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land-is Easter Island, which lies 1, 260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, and 2, 300 miles west of South America.

The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea.
