Looking at American Food

  Convenience Foods.

Instead of buying only fresh foods, Americans nowadays buy many more convenience food. There are foods which are ready partly or completely prepared. Many of them are frozen, such as frozen dinner (TV dinners ) , heat-and-serve French fries, and frozen pizzas. There are also many canned ( put in a can) convenience foods, such as ready-made spaghetti, soups, stews(炖熟的菜肴), and vegetables.

Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don't like to cook or wash dishes. But they often cost more than fresh, unprepared foods and may contain artificial additives (a chemical added to the food). Also, many people feel they don't taste as good as home cooked foods.

  Health Food and Co-ops

In the 1960s, a“back-to-the-earth”movement was started by young people in the United States. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. From the movement came a new understanding of food and health. Many people now prefer natural and organic (chemical-free) foods to the prepared foods sold in health food stores and in food co-ops, which are small stores where customers help manage the store. In coops, food is usually not packaged. Customers bring their own bags and jars and scoop(汲取) their food out of boxes or baskets.

  The diet Craze(节食热)

These days Americans are more and more concerned with their weight. Perhaps as many as 70 million Americans are on weight dollar business. American supermarkets sell a variety of diet foods such as diet soft drinks, diet candy, and diet salad dressings. Dieters also spend money on diet pills, exercise machines, and jogging suits(健美服). Each year dozens of new diets are popularized. They have such names as the Miracale Diet (a supernatural event) , the Nine Day Wonder Diet, and the Easy 24 Hour Diet. There is even one called the Ice Cream Diet, which advises the dieter to eat only ice cream for lunch and dinner! For dieters who cannot lose weight on their own, there are many well-organized diet groups, which offer help and encouragement.

Crime has his own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns. The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a night-crime 62 percent of murders are committed (干,犯) between 6 p. m and 6 a.m.

Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, robbing has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February. The month with least crimes of all is in May except for one strange fact. More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.

Clearly our seasonal cycles of knowledge are completely different from our tendencies for crimes. Professor Huntington made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings and get highest results on examinations. In all cases, he found a spring high and autumn high separated by a summer low.

Possibly, high temperature and high humidity(湿度) cause our strange and violent summer actions, but police officials are not sure.“There is , of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder,”they say,“Why murder's high time should came in the summer time we really don't know.”

In every school there is a“top”crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their lead. Let's say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Pretty soon everybody is wearing a bright red sweater.

There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that on some people bright red sweater is extremely unbecoming. The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are endangering their lives. They are like the sheep being led to the butcher.

Now, chances are that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life; chances are that one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying,“Gee, the crowd does it.”Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself, Learn to say,“No.”

Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from another world'. They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either.

All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the outside may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today.

So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and interests you have now, This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies (仙女), older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and prisoners of freedom.

To show you how that is happening while you are asleep and how your wishes or needs can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton (脱脂棉). He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girl friend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hand!

There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach (接近) to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.

1.From the passage we know that our dreams ________.

[ ]

A.have nothing to do with our daily life

B.are simply messages from another world

C.are to some degree caused by some of our feelings

D.are our imagination of our future life

2.If the quilt has slipped off your bed, you may dream that ________.

[ ]

A.you are lonely

B.you feel hungry and tired

C.you are afraid of the darkness

D.you feel very cold

3.Some scientists' explanation of dreams ________.

[ ]

A.is widely accepted by the majority

B.gives us an exact answer to the problem

C.offers a meaningful approach to the problem

D.has proved meaningless

4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.Our wishes and needs can never be dreamed by us.

B.Dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that will come true.

C.Some dreams are connected with our past experiences.

D.Scientists of great achievements can dream what they hope to invent.

The United States has a new national park. It is the Great Basin. It is the first national park in the western state of Nevada. The new park is in the eastern part of Nevada, near the border(边界) with Utah. It is far from any city.

An American explorer John Charles Fremont traveled through the area in the early 1800's. He found the land shaped like a bowl. So he named it the Great Basin. It is a land of unusual beauty and sharp differences.

For example, you can climb a mountain covered with green forests, then cool yourself in a field of snow as you arrive at the top. Here and there, sharp rocks push out through the snow. Among the rocks you might see homes of the golden hawk (鹰), a bird that was once in danger of dying out.

You can camp in a campground on the edge of Lehman Caves. These caves are a group of large underground rooms made of limestone (石灰石). You can walk through them for about a kilometer. Before the park opened, the caves were the center of interests for anyone traveling through this area.

The state of Nevada has wanted a national park for more than sixty years. There have always been the opposite ideas from people who believed that a park would harm (损害) mining and agricultural interests. The bill that set up the park, however, promises that mines will remain open, and that sheep and cows will continue to feed on the mountainsides.

Dr. Carl Sagan has been a leader in space exploration. He is an astronomer at Cornell University and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. The author talked with Dr. Carl Sagan about how he became an astronomer.

Q: At the age of five did you know what the stars were?

A: I didn't know what they were, so I asked my friends and some older children, I got answers like “They're lights in the sky, kid.”That wasn't much of an answer. What were they? Were they little electric light bulbs(灯泡) held by black wires you couldn't see?

Q: If there are creatures living on another planet, what do you think they would look like?

A: I can't imagine what they'd look like, and they couldn't imagine what we'd look like. All of life on Earth is the same, except for some external(外部的) differences in form. Every one of us on Earth, from bacteria(细菌) to human being; is made up of the same kinds of proteins and the same kinds of nucleic acids(核酸). But on another planet, everything is different, and I would expect that the organisms would be totally different from us.

Q: Do you think we should have a manned mission(工作团)to Mars?

A: I don't think there's any reason to send people to Mars if our goal is to find out about Mars. Let's send robots instead. They're cheaper. There's no risk of human lives. Robots can go to more dangerous places. But I think there are reasons for sending people there that are not connected to finding out about Mars. Planning for a manned mission to Mars would force us to improve some of our technology. It would encourage the major technological nations to come together for the project. Space flight also speaks to something deep within us. A human mission to Mars would provide a sense of adventure. It would help to stimulate a new generation of scientists, and it would make all people feel a little more optimistic about what we can do as a planet.

Q: What advice would you give a young person who wants to be an astronomer?

A: I'd say,“Study physics. But before you can study physics you have to know mathematics, so study mathematics.”I would also encourage them to read a lot, be curious, and ask questions.

1.As a boy, Carl Sagan didn't ________.

[ ]

A.often ask questions

B.always get satisfying answers from his friends

C.try to do well in physics

D.read a lot

2.We human beings are interested in finding life on another planet because ________.

[ ]

A.we are naturally drawn to other things that are alive and are curious about them.

B.most of us want to have more friends.

C.some of us are eager to rule the universe

D.scientists want to show how modem our technology is

3.Robots can be sent to Mars because ________.

[ ]

A.we have enough robots

B.they're strong and big

C.everything is easy to them

D.some duties are too dangerous for human being to fulfill

4.A manned mission to Mars ________.

[ ]

A.is reasonable if the goal is to collect information

B.is O.K. if robots are sent as well

C.can make us improve some technology to prepare for it

D.can make strong nations come together

5.Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.Carl Sagan is an astronaut.

B.Carl Sagan used to ask friends silly questions.

C.Carl Sagan thinks we can't imagine what creatures on another planet look like until they can imagine our appearance.

D.Carl Sagan encourages young people interested in astronomy to work hard at physics as well as mathematics.
