We found that bar at last. I didn't have to ask again, for there it was in big red neon letters over the window-Star Bar. There were some iron tables outside with plastic chairs around them. A few people sat listlessly around, looking at a portable television set that someone had brought out of the bar. they were all in thin summer dresses or short-sleeved shirts; even at that late hour it was stifling. Two thin dog lay under one of the tables with their tongues out, and some of the women were fanning themselves unenthusiastically (无精打采的) with magazines.

They took no notice of us at all.

A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times. A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night-Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. That is why I am writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent cooperation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.

A fire drill is not a meaningless exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run. Last week's fire drill has already shown a number of important things regarding precautions (预防措施) in the Hall. For instance, there seem to exist a number of “deaf spots” in the hall, namely, the two rooms in Purser House and some rooms in the Bottom Corridor. I have no reason to doubt that residents from these areas could not hear the alarm. I shall request an immediate examination of this problem.

I should, also remind you that it is a requirement that fire drills are regularly carried out (at least two in every one year) and each resident is made fully aware of this and take part. All residents must take fire precautions with enough seriousness. Failure to do so can result in heavy fires and moving out of the hall. Thank you again for your cooperation.

1.This note is made to ________.

[ ]

A.some fireman
B.residents of that area
C.students of a college
D.a regular audience

2.Last Fire Drill caused much more trouble because ________.

[ ]

A.a big fire started

B.it was at the weekend

C.it was in bad weather

D.it was at the best of time

3.Some people did not make their appearance at the Drill because ________.

[ ]

A.they were deaf

B.they could not hear the alarm

C.nobody waked them up

D.they had some other reasons

4.According to the speaker, a fire drill is extremely important for ________.

[ ]

A.it is a good physical exercise

B.it can save lives in case a fire starts

C.it is required by law

D.it can make people get more used to the inconvenience

A lot of us lose life's tougher battles by starting a frontal (正面的) attackwhen a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam's being lateserious illness at homehe decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn't work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.

Yes, the boss was. Sam entered the office at 9:35.The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室); everyone was hard at work. Sam's supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I'm Sam Maynard. I'm applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?”

The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his jobwith the only tool that could win, a laugh.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected (忽略), means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it's the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians (喜剧演员) on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance (忍受力) than people in any other forum.

1.Why was Sam late for his job?

[ ]

A.Because he was ill.

B.Because he got up late.

C.Because he was caught in a traffic jam.

D.He was busy applying for a new job.

2.The main idea of this passage is ________.

[ ]

A.sam Maynard saved his job with humor

B.humor is important in our lives

C.early bird gets the worm

D.humor can solve racial discriminations

3.The phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Many educators believe that homework is most effective for children in first through third grades when it does not go beyond 20 minutes each school day. From fourth through sixth grades, many educators suggest from 20 to 40 minutes a school day for most students. For students in 7th - through 9th - grades, generally, up to 2 hours a school day is suitable. Ninety minutes to 2 1/2 hours per night are proper for grades 10 through 12.Amounts that vary from these guidelines are fine for some students.

A common mistake, particularly among beginning teachers, is to assign too much homework. It can be hard to stop doing so if parents push for more homework and suppose that the best teachers assign the most homework. (This is not necessarily the case. ) Most often, however, a math teacher can tell after checking five algebraic equations (代数方程) whether students have mastered the necessary concepts.

As Ms. Bennett explains, “Homework should not be overburdening. If there's too much, it becomes drudgery. We need to keep [students'] attention - keep them inspired and wanting to do the homework. Otherwise, it's no good.”

Teachers also need to coordinate (协调) their homework assignments with those of other teachers so that students aren't getting four assignments on a Tuesday night, but no assignments on a Wednesday night. This coordination most often requires leadership and support from the principal or other administrators(管理者).

Finally, teachers need to keep watchful to how long students take to complete assignments. It is natural in a class full of varied students for some to take longer than others. Moreover, it is fine that some students do take longer, since research shows that students with low test scores who spend considerable time on homework get grades as good as students with more ability who spend less time. If an assignment takes too long, however, this may signal that a student needs more instruction to complete it successfully.

1.Which of the following assignment is not proper according to most educators?

[ ]

A.15 minutes' homework for a second - grade pupil.

B.Half an hour's homework for a fifth - grade pupil.

C.At least 2 hours' homework for a ninth - grade student.

D.About 2 hours' homework for a tenth - grade student.

2.In the writer's opinion, ________.

[ ]

A.the more homework a teacher assigns, the better he is

B.a good teacher is one who cares more for his students' health than their studies

C.whether a teacher is good or not depends on the amount of homework he assigns

D.a good teacher knows how much practice his students need for certain knowledge

3.The ward “drudgery” in the third paragraph most probably means “________”.

[ ]

A.hard boring work

B.unnecessary work

C.meaningless work

D.important but uninteresting work

4.The principal or other administrators are necessary ________.

[ ]

A.in helping the teachers know what homework they should assign

B.in helping each teacher assign homework at the right time

C.to ensure that the students have the proper amount of homework each day

D.to make sure that the students will finish all the homework every day

阅读下列短文,从所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

“A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right,” says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing: “If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed,” she says.

With the chief function of a writer being to entertain(让人愉快), Mollie is indeed an entertainer. “I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language,” she says. This love goes back to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said “Nonsense Mollie dear, you'll be a writer.” So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer.

This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical (自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition (雄心) and her struggle towards its achievement.

Thoughts of her childhood inevitably (不可避免地) brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields - sadly now covered with modern houses. “I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood. I'll never go back,” she said. “Never.”“When I set one of my books in Scotland,” she said, “I can recall my romantic (浪漫的) feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.”

1.What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book?

[ ]

A.It should not aim at a narrow audience.

B.It should he attractive to young readers.

C.It should be based on original ideas.

D.It should not include too much conversation.

2.In Mollie Hunter's opinion, one sign of a poor writer is ________.

[ ]

A.poor in life experience

B.short of writing skills

C.the weakness of description

D.the absence of a story

3.What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a very young child?

[ ]

A.She didn't expect to become a writer.

B.She didn't enjoy writing stories.

C.She didn't have any particular ambitions.

D.She didn't respect her teacher's views.

4.In comparison with children of earlier years, Mollie feels that modern children are ________.

[ ]

A.more intelligent

B.better informed

C.less eager to learn

D.less interested in reality

5.What is the writer's purpose in this text?

[ ]

A.To describe Mollie Hunter's most successful books.

B.To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter's books.

C.To introduce Mollie Hunter's work to a wider audience.

D.To provide information for Mollie Hunter's existing readers.

The French branch of McDonald's has run ads that included a surprising suggestion: Kids shouldn't eat at McDonald's more than once a week.

The advertisements, quoting (引用) information from specialists, aim to show that “McDonald's meals are part of a balanced weekly diet,” said Euro RSCG, the agency that came up with the ads, which appeared this spring, mostly in French women's magazines.

Alongside quotes from specialists addressing fatness and diets for children, the ads described how McDonald's hamburgers are made of 100 percent real beef and cooked on a grill free of additional oil.

One ad placed in Femme Actuelle in April quoted a nutritionist (营养学家) who said, “There's no reason to have too much fast food, or visit McDonald's more than once a week.”

The McDonald's Corp., based in Oak Brook, Ill., said in a statement Wednesday that it “strongly disagreed” with the nutritionist quoted in the French advertisement.

“The vast majority of nutrition specialists say that McDonald's food can be and is a part of a healthy diet based on the sound nutrition principles of balance, variety and moderation (适度),” the statement said.

Since opening its first French branch in 1968, McDonald's has expanded continuously in France. More recently McDonald's has come under fire from antiglobalization protesters(抗议者), farmers' groups, and in Paris, striking workers.

In 1999, sheep farmer-turned-activist Jose Bove became a standard-bearer(执掌大旗的楷模) for the French anti-globalization movement when he led a group that searched a McDonald's thoroughly in southern France.
