At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents (文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer.  As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.

Does all this mean environmental concerns (环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. “I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling (回收利用) ,” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

The rapid development in information technology is set to make the average home a virtual (实质上的) university campus. E-study (or online study), the latest trend in distance education, could leave university traditions such as attending lectures, classroom discussion stuck in the 20th university. As long as you can dial up the Internet and type in your code, you are able to study on line.

The University of Southern Queensland ( USQ) has been one of the leaders in this field, with up to 29 courses available (可得到的) for online study. It has progressively made studying certain subjects possible on the Internet in the past few years. The university started to offer its first complete full Internet courses last year.

Studying from interstate and around the world is now a reality. Carla Powell, 33, has worked full-time while pursuing her degree (获得学位) in Education Online through USQ. She likes the flexibility (灵活性) of online study. “It's exactly the same as studying on campus, except that there is not the pressure of having to go to classes which I hate.” Powell says. She says that she enjoys the close relationship with the professors on the online courses. “You just have to e-mail them, and they reply quickly. There are some student support groups available to us,” she says.

The major benefit of online study is the flexibility. Powell says she intends to travel overseas soon but as long as she can find an Internet café, all she has to do is to sit at a computer and complete assignments (布置的作业) on the other side of the world.

Online study is changing the focus of education towards the customers—students. “There is a revolution taking place; online education will greatly change the way education is looked at,” Professor Taylor says.

1.  The second sentence in the first paragraph most likely means “ ________”

A. university traditions will be fully replaced by e-study.

    B. e-study may signal the end of some university tradition.

    C. online study may win over traditional study in the end.

    D. traditional study belongs only to the 20th century.

2USQ is regarded as one of the leading institutes in online education because ________.

    A. it has made the earliest discoveries in Internet education

    B. people can pursue their degrees while working fulltime

    C. it offers Internet courses to applicants

    D. it is one of the pioneers (先锋) in the development of e-study

3Which of the following is not mentioned as the advantage of online study?

    A. People could set schedule (时间表) according to their need.

    B. Professors and students share closer relationship.

    C. There will be some support from student groups.

    D. There is no need to attend class regularly.

4According to the passage, online study could be flexibly carried out ______________.

    A. only in USQ

    B. only when you travel around

    C. after you get a job

    D. anytime and anywhere

All of us have felt pain, which can take complete control of our body and mind, making it impossible to move and even to think. Yet we need pain, without which we wouldn't know if we have hurt ourselves. It is our body's warning system, which tells us that we are injured and should do something about it.

Pain is the most common reason we go to a doctor or other healer. It is the most common reason we take medicine. Until recently, however, most doctors knew of only a few drugs that stopped some pains. They knew little about the process of pain itself, about which, however, new knowledge is helping them learn to control pain better.

Scientists have learned that the sense of pain is made up of both chemical and electrical signals, which travel from nerve cells (神经细胞) in the injured area, up the central nervous system to the brain. And back down again. Scientists also have learned that the nervous system sends two different kinds of pain message to the brain, one very fast, and the other slow.

The first message is warning signal, which moves at a speed of 30 meters a second, and which travels to the middle part of the brain, and then to the outer part. In less than a second, the brain understands what part of our body is hurt and how badly it is injured. At a speed of only one meter a second moves the other message, which is the first step in the healing process, in which an important part is played by a very powerful material called prostaglandin, which are produced in almost every part of our body when needed. Scientists say prostaglandin raise and lower blood pressure, and also cause fever. When we hurt ourselves, the injured part produces a chemical that changes into prostaglandin, which cause the injured part to become red and swollen. and send the second, slower message of pain to the brain, which tells us not to use the injured part until it heals.

1In your opinion, the word “healer” in the passage refers to someone who isn't a _____________but much like him or her.

    A. nurse

    B. patient

    C. doctor

    D. chemist

    A. central nervous system

    B. a powerful material

    C. the nervous system

    D. body's warning system

3Why does the brain know very well that we have hurt ourselves, and even what part of our body is hurt and even how it is injured, in less than a second? Because as soon as we hurt ourselves the warning signals will travel at once, at a speed of________ from nerve cells in the injured areas, up our central nervous systems to the middle and then to the outer part of our brains.

    A. 180 kilometers an hour

    B. 180 meters a minute

In 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers (探险者) landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the “moon people” they met. In turn, the “moon people” expressed their surprise. “Why?” they asked, “Are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?”

    H. G. Wells could only imagine travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.

Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large under-ground shopping areas. The “Chunnel”, a tunnel (隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete.

But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太阳能穹顶) would cover the whole city.

Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells' “moon people” would agree. Would you?

1The explorers in H. G. Wells' story were surprised to find that the “moon people” ________.

    A. knew so much about the earth

American parents usually think that their children should not have more pocket money than the children with whom he regularly connects, even if they are wealthier. But neither are children expected to compare with the richer if a large family, heavy responsibility (责任) or other conditions make it necessary to give a child less spending money than is customary (惯例) in the neighborhood.

Whatever the pocket money is, its entire use is not controlled by the parents, because a child learns to use money correctly only through dealing with it himself. If a seven-year-old child get a quarter as a week pocket money and is made to put it all in his piggy bank to save it up, he gets no idea what the real use for the money is. He gets the shiny coins and they soon disappear. The idea of a bank account (账号) is too early for so small a child, although he can be made to understand and enjoy saving his coins—not all of them, only a part of what he receives—to buy something he especially wants. By the time he is eight he is old enough to take part in the opening of his own saving account, parents may take him to the bank, open a saving account for him, and encourage him to put a certain quantity of any checks he receives as gifts into the bank and watch his bank savings grow as entry by entry (存入) is made. He will be saving, earning, and spending suitable quantities all along in order to learn how to manage money and to keep him in a favorable position with his friends. The boy who can't join his fellows in a sweet shop once in a while, because he has to save every cent he gets or earns for some big unknown projects his parents have chosen for him, is a sorry child.

1What do you think a piggy bank is?

    A. It is a kind of bank run by children.

    B. It is something in the shape of a pig for saving coins.

    C. It is a certain place in which pigs are raised.

    D. It is a bank whose building looks like a pig.

2Which of the following statements is true?

    A. Most of the rich people in America give children much pocket money.

    B. American children usually have their bank ac-counts until they are eight.

    C. American parents seldom care for their children's spending money.

    D. American children begin to learn how to manage money when very young.

3Suppose an 8-year-old child received 10 dollars as his birthday gift, he may probably ________.

    A. spend the money on the things he wants

    B. compare the gift with that of his friend

    C. have most of it saved in the bank

    D. put all the money in his piggy bank

4The writer think the boy is a sorry one if he saves every cent he gets or earns because ________.

    A. he can not manage his money and is kept in an unfavorable position

    B. he can not join the fellows in a sweet shop once in a while

    C. he can not learn the use of money through spending it himself

    D. he cannot have any other choice but save, earn or spend money

If there is no difference in general intelligence (智力) between boys and girls, what can explain girls' poor performance in science and mathematics?

It seems to be that their treatment at school is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive.

However, if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be worldwide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.

Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding (杰出的) mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.

Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence (信心) that they are able to succeed.

Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

1Girls are likely to think that ________.

    A. science courses are for both boys and girls

    B. science courses make them more popular

    C. science courses make them successful

    D. science courses are difficult for them

2The text mainly discusses ________ reasons for the difference between boys and girls in scientific achievements.

    A. biological

    B. historical

    C. social

    D. personal

3What are boys usually encouraged to do at school?

    A. To get help with their homework.

    B. To play the leading role in class.

    C. To work with girl students in class.

    D. To learn to take care of others.

4What does the passage say about great mathematicians?

    A. Their teachers did not supply answers to them

    B. They started learning mathematics at an earlier age.

    C. They showed mathematical abilities in their teenage years

    D. Their success resulted from their strong interest in mathematics.

5The author would probably agree that  ________.

    A. boys and girls learn in the same way

    B. boys and girls are equal in general intelligence

    C. girls are more confident in themselves than before

    D. girls should take fewer science courses than boys

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of. However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this shampoo damage the environment?” “Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”

A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the products are green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

1It becomes clear from the text that the driving force  (劳力) behind green products is________.

    A. public caring for the environment

    B. companies' desire for bigger sales

    C. new ways of doing business

    D. rapid growth of supermarkets

2What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Business and People

    B. Business Goes Green

    C. Shopping Habits Are Changing

    D. Supermarkets and Green Products

3The underlined word “it” in the third paragraph refers to ________.

    A. a selling point

    B. the company name

    C. a great demand for health foods

    D. the manufacturing of green products
