Herb was at home alone one night while his parents were out for the evening. He had often stayed alone before, so he wasn't afraid. As he waited for his parents to return home, he watched the late movie on television. His eyelids became heavier and heavier as the time passed.

During the 19th century, scientists found that when certain parts of the brain of a man were injured, he would lose the power to do certain things. And so, people thought that each part of the brain did a difficult job. But modern research has found that this is not so, for it is not easy to say exactly what each part of the brain does.

In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain. Chemists and biologists have discovered that the way our brain works is not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists tell us that 100 000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent research also suggests that we can remember everything that happens to us. We may not be able to recall some of the things we've heard and seen, but they are all kept in the storehouse of the human mind.

Earlier chemists thought that power of a person's brain got weaker as he grew older. But it is now thought that that is not true. As long as old person has always been active in the mind, he has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain. It is now thought that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do.

To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests, be so exciting or dramatic? I'm not sure about it.

Now we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning--the kind of music we hear in the concert hall, and we discover them in our everyday life too--in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.

It is well said, “Through music a child enters a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body Strong.”

(1) The writer says more about ________ in the text.

[ ]

A.life full of music

B.life without music

C.the importance of music

D.the development of music

(2) From the text, we learn that many people ________.

[ ]

A.don't realize the importance of music

B.get along quite well without music

C.go to the concert instead of enjoying music

D.think music would be less exciting than moving plot

(3) In the writer's opinion, if there was no music in the films or TV plays, ________.

[ ]

A.the cinema and theatre would be quiet

B.we would lose some of the audience

C.everything would be as exciting as before

D.it would be hard to imagine the result

(4) The underlined word “melody” means ________.

A.flying
B.looking
C.singing
D.living

(5) From the last paragraph, we learn that music ________.

[ ]

A.is very important, especially for children

C.can make our life exciting and dramatic

D.can make you enter another beautiful world

The story of how the song “Happy Birthday to You”came into being, began as a sweet one, which later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kinder-garten(幼儿园), and Dr Patty Hill, the principal(院长,负责人)of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister's expertise(专长)in the area of Kin-dergarten Education, “Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success.

The sisters published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Twenty-one years later, after Dr Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Mr Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, finally, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”, the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, “Good Morning to All”.

After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, took Mr Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed(确定), owned the melody(曲调).
